he can dig a big hole in one day, he could build a secret base in a couple months

socki (s1ocki), Tuesday, 20 August 2013 14:23 (twelve years ago)

he figured he'd be dead in within six months, what would be the point

Nhex, Tuesday, 20 August 2013 14:30 (twelve years ago)

i keep thinking about shuteyed lydia's red-soled louboutins stepping daintily around the red pools of blood seeping from dead men's skulls.

estela, Tuesday, 20 August 2013 14:53 (twelve years ago)

it's a striking image

i keep returning to the fact that she hunkered down near the exit stairs of the underground bus meth lab. her actions seemed so deliberate and calculated, yet still squeamish

carlos danger zone (mh), Tuesday, 20 August 2013 14:56 (twelve years ago)

lydia's cover-your-eyes-so-you-don't-see-the-dead-people was a great metaphor for the way the show covers up the human cost of walt/lydia/jessie's meth dealing

wouldst be great; art not without ambition, but without the illness should attend it. (at least not directly)

estela, Tuesday, 20 August 2013 15:17 (twelve years ago)

yeah, good connection there. Gus is very much a banquo character.
i guess the question is if hank is macduff

i keep returning to the fact that she hunkered down near the exit stairs of the underground bus meth lab. her actions seemed so deliberate and calculated, yet still squeamish

i figured this was cos she didn't know who'd win the shootout, so there would be some element of fear about who was going to open the hatch.

Shamrock Shoe (LocalGarda), Tuesday, 20 August 2013 16:02 (twelve years ago)

i agree - if the other guys won, they'd be surely gunning for her next

Nhex, Tuesday, 20 August 2013 16:24 (twelve years ago)

i think Lydia is plenty squeamish but her fear trumps all

wouldn't have been disappointed if the remainder of the season had been huell and burr just driving around in the truck trying to figure out what to do

this gtr climbed mt. washington (Edward III), Tuesday, 20 August 2013 20:08 (twelve years ago)

actually I have a legit question about that

what DO you do with a money pile that big. I mean, while I am firmly of the belief that walt is Wile E Coyote and as such his decision-making is not indicative, I mean who the fuck buries it in a hole

but like, don't offshore accounts and shell companies and whatever exist for that exact reason? I'm kinda curious what is the 'normal' method of dispersing/disguising huge amounts of ill-gotten cash

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 20 August 2013 20:26 (twelve years ago)

Walt and Skyler don't have banking connections. I suppose Saul might, but probably not at the level required.

what's up ugly girls? (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 20 August 2013 20:28 (twelve years ago)

laundering it through legitimate businesses, mostly, or finding a reputable offshore bank that can launder it for you

the problem in 2013 is that a lot of those banks got nabbed. Walt's on the right track with this second carwash thing, but he really needs a lot more than that

mh, Tuesday, 20 August 2013 20:29 (twelve years ago)

you have to remember that Gus had an entire chain of restaurants in the southwest, all the supporting businesses like the laundry, and a charitable organization

mh, Tuesday, 20 August 2013 20:29 (twelve years ago)

shell company route is basically what Walt was suggesting I think (buy more gas stations) but it takes a lotta time (xposts)

dmr, Tuesday, 20 August 2013 20:30 (twelve years ago)

oh yeah carwashes. not gas stations.

dmr, Tuesday, 20 August 2013 20:30 (twelve years ago)

You have a kickstarter for a multimillion dollar Broadway production of Mean Girls but secretly promise a small return to all investors. You then sit back and let lilo do the rest.

touch. zing touch. you've almost convinced me I'm real (Sufjan Grafton), Tuesday, 20 August 2013 20:36 (twelve years ago)

I was listening to a podcast that was talking about how to smuggle a lot of cash and the guy said to fly it into country (he named some small island countries) without customs, get cashiers checks for the cash, then fly to a country with customs where they only check your bags and keep the check in your pocket and then open a bank account there. I'm sure I'm missing some important details. Anyway, they needed to hire a plane and fly the money around.

Lawyer... SUAVE... (carl agatha), Tuesday, 20 August 2013 20:40 (twelve years ago)

my co-worker who used to work at a bank told me if you deposit over $10,000 a government security alert immediately goes into action and you have to fill out a bunch of forms. They'll even get you if you're sneaky and do smaller amounts over a month or so.

"Max's Original Starship" Vol. 3 (sunny successor), Tuesday, 20 August 2013 20:51 (twelve years ago)

yeah, that is true for any US bank

that's also the amount you're not allowed to exceed on your person when traveling without declaring, iirc

mh, Tuesday, 20 August 2013 20:52 (twelve years ago)

yeah foreign travel definitely required here, I would think

what's up ugly girls? (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 20 August 2013 20:53 (twelve years ago)

didnt skylar say something to the effect of 'i couldnt launder all of this if we had 20 car washes' when she first showed walt the pile?

"Max's Original Starship" Vol. 3 (sunny successor), Tuesday, 20 August 2013 20:53 (twelve years ago)

she sure did
that's why i thought they could branch out the scenery and include some gnarly shipping dudes/somali pirates into the show

If you have that kind of money in your house and you order a pizza I wonder if you just run downstairs and grab a couple of $20s from the stack if you forgot to go to the ATM?

because recording whispering means having engineers who are about their business and there's not a whole lot of them

YOU FOOLS PAY OVER $2.50 for a comic book (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 21 August 2013 04:41 (twelve years ago)

I swear there was some scene on the Sopranos where Carmela deposited like $9,900 in a bank and the teller said something "gee, if it was $100 more we'd have to inform the feds!" and Carmela acts all innocent as they show her marking a list like she had done this at five other banks already.

Also Pablo Escobar's cartel suposedly spent $2500 a month just for rubber bands to wrap around their cash and lost 10% just to rats chewing up piles in warehouses.

Basically I'm sort of fascinated by how you deal with ridiculous amounts of illicitly acquired paper money.

Kelley Dixon, editor of episode 511 had this to say about the upcoming ep:
"Oh...my...god. OHMYGOD!!!!!!!!'

No.

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 21 August 2013 07:54 (twelve years ago)

Someone on the net pointed out that the divorce lawyer Skyler talked to during season 3, the one to whom she confessed Walt is a drug dealer, is still sort of a loose end in the story. If Hank somehow manages to find her and question her, could she spill the beans on Skyler and Walt, or would that be a breach of attorney-client confidentiality? Could this be the smoking gun Hank needs? (Though I guess it's still second-hand knowledge, hardly enough prove anything.)

Tuomas, Wednesday, 21 August 2013 08:40 (twelve years ago)

On the subject of loose ends.... When Jesse was cooking in Mexico they were videoing him. Later, while on one of their faux stakeouts, Walt asks Hank about the Mexican cartel bloodbath. Hank replies that as soon as they clear out the bodies they'll know more. Could Hank get hold of this tape then use Jesse to get Walt?

"Max's Original Starship" Vol. 3 (sunny successor), Wednesday, 21 August 2013 08:50 (twelve years ago)

I'm not sure if Hanks needs that evidence anymore, since Jesse was found with millions of shady cash. And since Hank figured out it was Walt who arranged the fake phone call about Marie being in hospital when Hank was about to arrest Jesse, it means Hank now knows Jesse was working with Walt. Also, Jesse's clearly looking for absolution now, so all Hank needs to do is make Jesse get over his hatred of him, and then he'll get Jesse co-operating with the cops. I think it's almost certain this'll happen.

Tuomas, Wednesday, 21 August 2013 08:59 (twelve years ago)

I don't think Jesse will rat anyone out. He may breakdown and confess he had some involvement in drew sharp's death but I seriously doubt he'd go so far turning Walt in

"Max's Original Starship" Vol. 3 (sunny successor), Wednesday, 21 August 2013 09:32 (twelve years ago)

But yeah he clearly hates him now

"Max's Original Starship" Vol. 3 (sunny successor), Wednesday, 21 August 2013 09:37 (twelve years ago)

It's also interesting that he didn't call Saul when those jerk off FBI dudes had him in a room again. It's like he's not even interested in spinning a story. He's just silent like he doesn't care what they do.

"Max's Original Starship" Vol. 3 (sunny successor), Wednesday, 21 August 2013 09:41 (twelve years ago)

Jesse didn't have a single word of dialogue in that episode, did he?

they all are afflicted with a sickness of existence (Scik Mouthy), Wednesday, 21 August 2013 11:55 (twelve years ago)

"If Hank somehow manages to find her and question her, could she spill the beans on Skyler and Walt, or would that be a breach of attorney-client confidentiality?"

Good god yes. It would also be hearsay.

One bad call from barely losing to (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 21 August 2013 11:57 (twelve years ago)

Just saw the ep. This is quality TV. There's a shot in the desert that's framed through a rock that looks like a closing fist. That's not a coincidence.

What's to stop anyone from taking the money in a big boat to some off-shore account? Of course, I don't know how one goes about depositing millions in stacks of cash anywhere. You're better off just chucking it out the window like Jesse.

Man, maybe Jesse does rat him out, and Walt is getting the ricin to take out Jesse. I can imagine Walt at this (that) point being so enraged at Jesse the Rat that he turns himself in just to get close to him to kill him. "Have a cigarette, buddy."

BTW, irony a la "The Shield" would leave everyone gone or jailed or dead except Walt, who is left free (cancer or otherwise) and presumed innocent but constantly under watch and unable to spend his money.

This show.
