lag∞n, Monday, 19 August 2013 20:33 (twelve years ago)

the hole digging was TOTALLY ridiculous
dude couldn't have done that even in his prime

no fomo (La Lechera), Monday, 19 August 2013 20:36 (twelve years ago)

It's kind of what dudes in their late teens/early 20s who are all like "yeah, I've never done <some physical thing> but if I had to I could totally flip out and do it"

Kind of like how they watch The Godfather or w/e and think they could definitely be a crime boss, if they really wanted

carlos danger zone (mh), Monday, 19 August 2013 20:39 (twelve years ago)

i assume the louboutins were for the trademark SPLASH OF COLOR that gilligan likes

i had images of walt getting his shirt caught on one of those huge barrels o'cash and being dragged into the hole and crushed like a bug

rest of season just long time-lapse shots of walt's decomposing corpse

what's up ugly girls? (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 19 August 2013 20:43 (twelve years ago)

He totally could've dug that whole. Just needs some meth.

dan selzer, Monday, 19 August 2013 20:45 (twelve years ago)

hank handled the talk with skyler incredibly poorly

i didn't think this at all. i mean it got out of hand and pulling out a tape recorder was probably a little premature but i think skylar would have reacted very differently if hank had found out and approached her somewhere between 'i won' and 'how big does this pile of $$$ have to be?.'

what I liked about this episode was how Skyler reacts to Hank's dehumanizing/depersonalizing of her - she is tired of being treated like someone without agency and she has learned that when people tell you they're acting in your interest, they're usually lying, or at best they're exaggerating their ability to take care of you

feel like there's some cool feminist subtext/s to Skyler's realization that she is on her own and holds all the cards

genuine question - how was he dehumanizing/depersonalizing her?

"Max's Original Starship" Vol. 3 (sunny successor), Monday, 19 August 2013 21:00 (twelve years ago)

i think the hole digging fits with the often comic-booky or western tone of the show. i like that they go with stuff like that, suspension of disbelief be damned.

ryan, Monday, 19 August 2013 21:00 (twelve years ago)

by reverting to standard cop/perp roles

xp

what's up ugly girls? (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 19 August 2013 21:01 (twelve years ago)

no kidding, he immediately jumped to "oh, you poor baby" and figured since Walt is nothing other than a monster to him now, obviously that's her take too

at least Marie had the agency to ask the strong questions and be offended that Skylar knew and was involved. shit never even occurred to Hank that she could be a player or had any of her own free will

carlos danger zone (mh), Monday, 19 August 2013 21:03 (twelve years ago)

yup, otm

Nhex, Monday, 19 August 2013 21:05 (twelve years ago)

perhaps important to remember that cops are trained to divide all non-cops into two categories: victim or criminal

what's up ugly girls? (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 19 August 2013 21:06 (twelve years ago)

yeah, family member is a distant third there

carlos danger zone (mh), Monday, 19 August 2013 21:07 (twelve years ago)

i'm glad someone here pointed out that once Skyler realized that Walt was going to die again, it completely changed the dynamic - definitely otm, waiting for him to die is once again her best move

Nhex, Monday, 19 August 2013 21:10 (twelve years ago)

hank seemed like he was almost offering to walk skrim through minimizing the appearance of her role in the conspiracy, but he couldnt quite get it out cause he was discomobulated

lag∞n, Monday, 19 August 2013 21:11 (twelve years ago)

I've been trying to figure out how to describe his recent emotional distress, seems kind of like an extreme anxiety punctuated by rage

carlos danger zone (mh), Monday, 19 August 2013 21:12 (twelve years ago)

i think the hole digging fits with the often comic-booky or western tone of the show. i like that they go with stuff like that, suspension of disbelief be damned.

but stuff like secret underground labs and exploding chemistry tricks are at least comic-booky in a FUN way. the idea that WW could dig a hole the size of a cargo van in the rocky, sun-baked desert dirt is just silly.

wk, Monday, 19 August 2013 21:12 (twelve years ago)

walt = wile e coyote

then it makes sense

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 19 August 2013 21:13 (twelve years ago)

lol

wk, Monday, 19 August 2013 21:13 (twelve years ago)

he should have just set the barrels there and painted them to look like rocks + cactuses

wk, Monday, 19 August 2013 21:14 (twelve years ago)

he shouldve just moved them to a different storage space

lag∞n, Monday, 19 August 2013 21:14 (twelve years ago)

or like six different storage spaces

lag∞n, Monday, 19 August 2013 21:16 (twelve years ago)

sure... but that would've been really boring

Nhex, Monday, 19 August 2013 21:16 (twelve years ago)

he shouldve just replaced his bed w the money

lag∞n, Monday, 19 August 2013 21:17 (twelve years ago)

yeah, keeping it all in one spot is really dumb too

wk, Monday, 19 August 2013 21:19 (twelve years ago)

they should just pay Saul's two employees to drive the van around 24/7 in alternating 12 hour shifts

carlos danger zone (mh), Monday, 19 August 2013 21:20 (twelve years ago)

disguised as a google maps van? he should just move it around between the termite houses.

wk, Monday, 19 August 2013 21:21 (twelve years ago)

the chemo is making him stronger, walt is godzilla

pplains, Monday, 19 August 2013 21:29 (twelve years ago)

he is a monster

carlos danger zone (mh), Monday, 19 August 2013 21:31 (twelve years ago)

walt is not the villain in this show and i dont really think that is the show's intention

socki (s1ocki), Monday, 19 August 2013 21:38 (twelve years ago)

the villain is meth iirc

carlos danger zone (mh), Monday, 19 August 2013 21:42 (twelve years ago)

see i thought Hank's litany of Walt's misdeeds felt a little intentionally instructive--as if there needed to be a reminder of Walt's crimes in some objective voice or whatever. i mean, if Walt's not a "villain" in the moralistic world that Gilligan said he wanted to create for the show, then what is he?

ryan, Monday, 19 August 2013 21:43 (twelve years ago)

he's a pretty classic anti-hero

socki (s1ocki), Monday, 19 August 2013 21:44 (twelve years ago)

it would be more interesting if he was the villain!

ryan, Monday, 19 August 2013 21:47 (twelve years ago)

then who would the hero be? hank? make it another cop show? naw. it's more interesting that he's NOT.

socki (s1ocki), Monday, 19 August 2013 21:48 (twelve years ago)

sure, maybe you're right. i think that Walt's status as anti-hero is less due to any conflicted or muddled being of the character than the narrative propulsion that makes the audience identify with him.

in another respect, though, there are certain elements that cast his motivations in classic villain style, like Iago or characters like that. I mean, Iago gets a lot of lines, the most in the play, but he's no anti-hero.

ryan, Monday, 19 August 2013 21:52 (twelve years ago)

yeah but the play isnt called iago

socki (s1ocki), Monday, 19 August 2013 21:56 (twelve years ago)

neither is the show called Breaking Not-Good

Warning: If youre not interested in trivia from writers/directors etc dont bother reading below. god/devil is in the details etc etc

Tidbits from gilligan, cranston, michelle maclaren and peter gould on last weeks breaking bad insider podcast on 509:

1. peter gould wrote the episode and had already written the teaser which had the kids skating in the pool and the white house completely demolished. Like, not there at all. Originally, future Walt was visiting just to reminisce but they finally decided the scene needed a button so in came the ricin and back came the house.
2. the pool is actually one of those fiberglass shell pools, not concrete, so they assumed the skaters would probably crack it and they'd have to buy a new pool for the house owners but the pool ended up unscathed.
3. When Walt looks out the back sliding glass door at the skaters, the guy with the camera is actually a crew member from the camera dept.
4. Carol's garden is totes CGI. Cranston directed this episode and wanted the stark diff between the white house and a normal persons house in the teaser. They only had the destroyed whitehouse for a week or whatever before it was restored and because cranston wanted it in carol's shot he had to move her out of the garden and on to the lawn hence post-pro cgi garden. FAKE ROSES.
5. There was no dialogue in the first Carol scene in the script. The character wasn't even named. Cranston came up with the 'Hello, Carol' while filming.
6. The hank looking at evidence montage was supposed to end with the methylamine heist video confirming for him it is walt but they went with the St Muerte pic because he had never seen walt in the drawing and then pow perspective change. Also hank is wearing a delbert mcclinton t-shirt lol
7. Badger's star trek idea was an idea gilligan actually pitched for a star trek episode.

im only 25 minutes in so thats it.
