Just finished season 3 and the finale had in tears laughing at the beginning and sad tears at the end. What a show he's created.

Everyone I know loves this show so much, as I presume does everyone on here (long thread), feeling stupid for being barely able to not ffwd through the standup and thinking the rest's just occasionally OK

Well not stupid, but odd

I think S2 was a hair better in terms of consistency, but damn if S3 wasn't awesome and ambitious as hell. Sort of hoping S4 is just a long-ass movie broken into 13 parts.

there were a few stretches in S3 where he almost veers into woody allen-style "i love this city" sentimentality or just artsy cliché but he always turns back just in time.

i do worry he's getting ambitious and next season will be his "shadows and fog" or something

also this is neither a criticism nor a compliment but does the show seem to be getting less transgressive?

the last season had peaks of real brilliance but felt rushed to me
and apparently to him as well as he decided to take a year off to regroup on this and other projects

the last 3 episodes of S3 were brilliant though. I wish they could have just aired them all at once though, it felt too much like a movie. some of my favorite TV ever really.

I saw the show he had on HBO ages ago and thought it was pretty good, though sort of minimalistic. Then again I thought they were trying to do a Honeymooners sort of thing and it had that feel, for me, with a slightly updated feel. Pamela Adlon is so awesome!

A friend of mine had a completely different take on this than seemingly every other person in the world:

You know what? Before smart phones and texting, I consistently lost touch with and lost friends because, as someone with Asperger's, I couldn't keep up with the exhausting demands on phone calls and in person meet ups that neurotypicals require to keep a friendship going. My smart phone has, for the first time ever, allowed me to have a meaningful social life and connect with people in a way that doesn't exhaust and/or kill me.

Also, I suffer from depression and I'm hella in tune with my sadness and the sadness of life.

So FUCK THIS SHIT.

I know you can ruin any observation or joke by applying some anecdotal element to it, but it's a pov worth considering.

it's great that some ppl with aspergers could connect with people over the internet but i think internet addiction is a pretty serious and super prevalent and i don't think it is so simple as "u suck at using tech"

i really admire his writing. he's the closest to carlin as far as good writing goes. i'm sure the whole cell-phone thing would be even better on stage.

i think he's kinda otm. at least about the tech thing. and just like louis i am on the computer all the time. but i don't own a cell-phone. so on those rare occasions when i venture outside i am 100% tech-less. i prefer life that way.

yeah its pretty simple. louis uses cell phones and computers all the time and he has noticed that this might not always be the best thing to do. its not that deep. but the way he describes it/writes it/acts it out is fun! and done well. to me.

i tend to think that

a) it doesn't matter if louis ck actually is wedded to his iphone or not

b) it doesn't matter where he took stuff from if he builds satisfyingly on it

i mean he's a performer, and a great one, do you really care if in his personal life lines up precisely with his routines?

right but i think that by contrast with other comics people tend to treat ck as if he's actually using his routine to express beliefs he feels strongly about and wants other people to hold. whereas in fact he's just trying to say stuff that's funny, as far as i can tell. e.g. i'm sure lots of comics are actually totally fine with airplane food! but that shouldn't stop you from making fun of it in public if you can make it funny.

I think people tend to forget that half of what Louis says is about how much of an idiot he is himself. I do believe he wants people to think about what he is saying, but everything should be taken with a grain of salt.
