This thread is like nabisco and Tracer trying to have a conversation on opposite sides of a room filled with autistic people on horse tranquilizers.

Whose justification do you mean?

It is my lack of legal knowledge justification. I find it pretty effective though! I mean it may be pretty obivious but I think most the knee-jerk against hate-crime legislations can be defused if you get people to sign on for "the system meant to protect us all equally doesn't do so."

judges don't usually have the discretion to hand down 10 based on any outside factor that's not put in their purview by the legislature

What I'm about to say couldn't be any more off topic, but in light of some recent decisions by the U.S. Supreme Court, there is some question whether a judge is permitted to increase a sentence for a crime based upon the bias motivation for that crime, unless the motivation was first submitted to the jury and the jury made a finding on that bias motivation.

Mostly that just makes me wonder who's going to protect the homophobe's right to be a homophobe. Which, you know, seems like an important thing to protect.

hoosteen = "cute" variation on "Justin," right?

It's the Spanish pronounciation (and the name my mother raised me with, though my dad preferred Justin).

I think black people would either be more or perhaps less likely to kick a drunk woman out of a hotel for calling a gay coworker a fag. Does ILX have an opinion on this?

Words the poem robot things rhyme:

sweater / adjuster
tissue / barbecue
spur / err
widest / fondest
AUSTERE / DEBONAIR (maybe it is from New Zealand?)
reappear / blare
bided / avoided
gnawed / avowed
having / abolishing
WHITTLE / BOTTLE

nabisco, Friday, 27 June 2008 23:27 (fifteen years ago) link

Actually I will also grant "reappear / blare" on "this might almost rhyme in New Zealand" grounds.

nabisco, Friday, 27 June 2008 23:28 (fifteen years ago) link

Also "bided / avoided" -- ok, fine, clearly this is all based on the official New Zealand Rhyming Dictionary

nabisco, Friday, 27 June 2008 23:28 (fifteen years ago) link

Many people do not seem to understand that robots are masters of off-rhyme.

SWAT Standoff Ends
A swat standoff that began at 1 a.m. Monday morning turned into a manhunt about four hours later.

Police say the man they’re now looking for has a background in law enforcement in Bexar County.

It all started at the Doubletree Hotel in the 1600 block of North I-35. That's between East 15th Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.

Police received a call about a domestic dispute from inside a Doubletree hotel room. When authorities arrived, a woman involved in the dispute told them the man was still inside that room.

Four and a half hours later, after the SWAT team took all necessary precautions, they found out no one was there. So, a manhunt has now begun.

The man is white, 27-years-old, 5’8’’, 185 pounds, wearing a black shirt and white shorts.

If you have any information, call the Austin Police Department.
