yeah I was kind of amazed at how much nu-Turtles had changed everything around.

I'm halfway tempted to use this thread to liveblog me falling in love with Jennifer Herrema. Right now, I am checking out her star chart.

In 1997–1998, the Turtles starred in a live-action television series called Ninja Turtles: The Next Mutation that directly follows the events of the first three movies. A fifth turtle was introduced, a female named "Venus de Milo" who was skilled in the mystical arts of the shinobi.[13] The series was a loose continuation of the movie franchise, as Shredder had been defeated and the Ninja Turtles encountered new villains. Other connections to the feature films include the fact that Splinter's ear was cut, the Foot Soldiers were humans, and the Turtles lived in the abandoned subway station seen in the second and third movies. The Next Mutation Turtles made a guest appearance on Power Rangers in Space

anyways,

right now: Royal Trux's Sweet Sixteen. Probably about the crack open some early 90s issues of Alpha Flight in .cbr form. Maybe buy a couple books on Barnes and Noble's website.

later: listening to the Clipping album on their bandcamp (ILM thread here: Clipping - Midcity (noise rap)) while working on some novel outlines

even later: just starting Dostoyevsky's The Devils (Magarshack translation), looking forward to digging in deeper to that...

Drugs A. Money, Sunday, 28 July 2013 06:13 (ten years ago) link

what other dostoevsky have you read?

fervently nice (Treeship), Sunday, 28 July 2013 06:17 (ten years ago) link

I've read all four big ones (disclosure: I quit on The Idiot about a hundred pages from the end). Before I had read the P/V Demons translation. I opted for Magarshack this time bcz I had read his translation of C+P and basically thought it was the best novel I had ever read, and then read some of the P/V translation and wasn't sure I would've come to the same conclusion had I encountered that one first.

Anyways, I have been planning to re-read it ever since difficult listening hour posted a bunch about it some months ago. I was worried that DM might not do justice to its bonkers humor and jagged intensity but I'm only a few pages in and the disorienting satirical tone is still very bracing...

Drugs A. Money, Sunday, 28 July 2013 06:28 (ten years ago) link

i've never read magarshack but i'll keep him in mind as a translator to check out. i just finished the donald rayfield translation of gogol's "dead souls" and it was okay... but i think i like pevear and volohonksy's rendering of gogol's "voice" in the short stories. maybe i should just stick with them because many of my all-time favorite reading experiences have been their translations of dostoevsky, chekhov, and gogol. their version of notes from underground is much better than whichever one was included in the norton annotated edition.

fervently nice (Treeship), Sunday, 28 July 2013 06:41 (ten years ago) link

Didn't P?V re-translate the title for NftU? into something like a Notes from a Dank Cellar or something?

yeah dude I think if P/V are working for you, then keep with them. I had a book of Chekhov's short stories that they translated which were excellent.

Drugs A. Money, Sunday, 28 July 2013 07:03 (ten years ago) link

it's just called "Notes from Underground" i think, not "the Underground." the chekhov stories they translated are indeed awesome.

i tried to order their translation of anna karenina but amazon sent me louise and aylmer maude instead. i think i might try that one.

Went to The Getty Center in Brentwood around 6pm. It was quite nice.

I had no idea there was a band performing and a DJ. Saw both for a few minutes. Seemed like a cool vibe but I had to go.

The waitress at this Turkish restaurant in Westwood I went to was quite charming.

markers, Sunday, 4 August 2013 04:20 (ten years ago) link

they fixed the main thing that was wrong with it but now the internal speakers don't work, and the laptop only has sound when either headphones or speakers are plugged in. apparently this is an easy fix though, but i am going to need to bring it back in

I can't party like I used to. maybe it was cuz I showed up early to help the host get a keg, but like 4 hours in, all the beer/jello shots made me sleepy and they let me 'nap' on one of their guest beds. by 9:30, it was a night. oi. :/

PLUS....now, with my worsening reflux issues, the beer gave me some of the worst heartburn I've had in my life.

still a fun party tho, but I do miss the days where I could party til 3 in the morning...
