i don't really use itunes. but the phrase "all killer no filler" makes me think of a certain band

that song reminds me of ryan's "house of rock"-themed bar mitzvah

i always liked sum-41 in their more wistful, less confrontational mode. my mom would actually let me play this one in the car.

even though yesterday i was complaining about booze hurting me, i'm drinking brandy again tonight. hmmmmmm

arby's, Sunday, 28 July 2013 04:20 (ten years ago) link

i just watched a long documentary about the psychology of batman

you should listen to episode 3 of my new podcast and tell me if you like it or if we should hang up our mics

hoosteen.net/defart/3

i will now watch 'casey jones,' a 40 minute short film focusing on a ninja turtles sidekick

BIG HOOS aka the denigrated boogeyman (BIG HOOS aka the steendriver), Sunday, 28 July 2013 04:40 (ten years ago) link

the psychology of batman isn't nearly as interesting as the politics imo

fervently nice (Treeship), Sunday, 28 July 2013 04:41 (ten years ago) link

lol i was watching bits and pieces from the dark knight rises on youtube not too long ago tonight

markers, Sunday, 28 July 2013 04:43 (ten years ago) link

listening to the podcast now. you have a good radio voice. xp

fervently nice (Treeship), Sunday, 28 July 2013 04:46 (ten years ago) link

haha thx

both my parents did radio, plus i do this stuff a lot already for political work, so i'm half practiced as far as amateurs go

you do a good job of sounding lively and engaged. i recorded audiobooks for "recording for the blind" last summer and i could not manage to find that middle ground between monotone zombie and crazy person.

fervently nice (Treeship), Sunday, 28 July 2013 04:59 (ten years ago) link

this casey jones movie is surprisingly bloody

your show glitched out several minutes in and now i can't listen :[

stress is a real trixter, i gather so far

arby's, Sunday, 28 July 2013 05:01 (ten years ago) link

it's a very relevant issue for me. i used to have issues with anxiety and now, in order to avoid that, i kind of avoid stuff that is stressful as long as possible... leading to more stress down the line. i need to learn to make stress work for me.

turtles forever is pretty good

2003 turtles get caught up in a transdimensional thing and have to hang out with 1987 turtles, with a climactic appearance by gritty black & white comics turtles

xxp regarding the guitar palns. yeah. i'm trying to work out a few models of acoustic guitars. i have a 12 fret OM type thing worked out, was working on a 14 fret version of the same, as well as a jumbo model. as of now bracing and neck joint and some other features based on research and designs by an australian luthier/engineer trevor gore. will probably work out some stuff of my own as i absorb more of the science but as of now i plan on experimenting with his and a few other contemporary designs out there.

xp holy cow that's awesome arby's

Drugs A. Money, Sunday, 28 July 2013 05:23 (ten years ago) link

xp thanks. i'm just outta school and don't even have a shop yet so it's all just planning at the moment. i mean i have tons of hand tools but i ~just~ finally tracked down a work bench and am starting to piecemeal the power tools needed. then humidity and dust control, then making jigs and fixtures, then...! it's gonna be a long road!

i never watched 03 turtles, was really confused that '03 shredder was like a krang style brain in a machine

yeah I was kind of amazed at how much nu-Turtles had changed everything around.

I'm halfway tempted to use this thread to liveblog me falling in love with Jennifer Herrema. Right now, I am checking out her star chart.

In 1997–1998, the Turtles starred in a live-action television series called Ninja Turtles: The Next Mutation that directly follows the events of the first three movies. A fifth turtle was introduced, a female named "Venus de Milo" who was skilled in the mystical arts of the shinobi.[13] The series was a loose continuation of the movie franchise, as Shredder had been defeated and the Ninja Turtles encountered new villains. Other connections to the feature films include the fact that Splinter's ear was cut, the Foot Soldiers were humans, and the Turtles lived in the abandoned subway station seen in the second and third movies. The Next Mutation Turtles made a guest appearance on Power Rangers in Space

anyways,

right now: Royal Trux's Sweet Sixteen. Probably about the crack open some early 90s issues of Alpha Flight in .cbr form. Maybe buy a couple books on Barnes and Noble's website.

later: listening to the Clipping album on their bandcamp (ILM thread here: Clipping - Midcity (noise rap)) while working on some novel outlines

even later: just starting Dostoyevsky's The Devils (Magarshack translation), looking forward to digging in deeper to that...

Drugs A. Money, Sunday, 28 July 2013 06:13 (ten years ago) link

what other dostoevsky have you read?

fervently nice (Treeship), Sunday, 28 July 2013 06:17 (ten years ago) link

I've read all four big ones (disclosure: I quit on The Idiot about a hundred pages from the end). Before I had read the P/V Demons translation. I opted for Magarshack this time bcz I had read his translation of C+P and basically thought it was the best novel I had ever read, and then read some of the P/V translation and wasn't sure I would've come to the same conclusion had I encountered that one first.

Anyways, I have been planning to re-read it ever since difficult listening hour posted a bunch about it some months ago. I was worried that DM might not do justice to its bonkers humor and jagged intensity but I'm only a few pages in and the disorienting satirical tone is still very bracing...

Drugs A. Money, Sunday, 28 July 2013 06:28 (ten years ago) link

i've never read magarshack but i'll keep him in mind as a translator to check out. i just finished the donald rayfield translation of gogol's "dead souls" and it was okay... but i think i like pevear and volohonksy's rendering of gogol's "voice" in the short stories. maybe i should just stick with them because many of my all-time favorite reading experiences have been their translations of dostoevsky, chekhov, and gogol. their version of notes from underground is much better than whichever one was included in the norton annotated edition.

fervently nice (Treeship), Sunday, 28 July 2013 06:41 (ten years ago) link

Didn't P?V re-translate the title for NftU? into something like a Notes from a Dank Cellar or something?

yeah dude I think if P/V are working for you, then keep with them. I had a book of Chekhov's short stories that they translated which were excellent.

Drugs A. Money, Sunday, 28 July 2013 07:03 (ten years ago) link

it's just called "Notes from Underground" i think, not "the Underground." the chekhov stories they translated are indeed awesome.
