Bolting is a thing, it happens and is a bummer, but you can't do anything about it except try to find more heat-resistant varieties next time. What kind of veg are we talking?

long chinese radishes for the most part. Think I planted them too close together and initially in a too short container. Subsequently moved them into a much deeper one and they're still very short but now have flowers coming off the top. Well growing them was an enjoyable experience. Will do them differently if I do them again next year, I think it's to late to start again this year.

Stevolende, Saturday, 20 July 2013 07:08 (twelve years ago)

I dunno about chinese radishes, but every radish (cherry belle, french breakfast, snoglobe, etc) I've ever grown has bolted to shit at the slightest hint of summer heat. They germinate and put out foliage, but never develop a nice root. I am zone 7b (US) and seed them in February and March; no luck with seeds in April and thereafter.

Started getting heavy thunderstorms here about midnight last night, and it's still raining now. It broke the heat, but now we have flash flood warnings again because it dumped 4" of water in parts of the county overnight.

I am about to drive 45 minutes to the La Paz Applebees why because air conditioning. Followed by Hangover 3 why because most tolerable movie selection in town, plus you can get drink and food service by pushing a button on your leather chair arm, plus air conditioning.

quincie, Wednesday, 24 July 2013 19:24 (twelve years ago)

Are they going to have an intermission during Hangover 3?

pplains, Wednesday, 24 July 2013 19:35 (twelve years ago)

i do not have the ac on today. it is delightful.

caek, Wednesday, 24 July 2013 19:36 (twelve years ago)

Yeah, there's a high of 72 today!!!!! I have the windows open!!!!! I am going to go outside voluntarily!!!!!

Lawyer... SUAVE... (carl agatha), Wednesday, 24 July 2013 19:38 (twelve years ago)

green with envy here, not kidding

quincie, Wednesday, 24 July 2013 19:48 (twelve years ago)

I was actually chilly for a second outside. At 72º! I'm like one of those Gulf Coast assholes who would say today is crisp or chilly.

We are going to Maine in September to a place with no AC and I'm sure the property owner was amused by my 3rd-degree interrogation about what temps to expect. If I find myself even a little bit warm against my will during our stay, I'm going to file a claim on our vacation insurance.

schlock corridor (WilliamC), Wednesday, 24 July 2013 23:16 (twelve years ago)

Are you going to be seaside? Because the furthest up my torso my testicles have ever been was when I dared to jump into the Atlantic Ocean on the Maine seaboard in the middle of August.

pplains, Wednesday, 24 July 2013 23:23 (twelve years ago)

'sup, internet.

pplains, Wednesday, 24 July 2013 23:28 (twelve years ago)

About 20 minutes inland, I'm afraid. I wanted to be on Peaks Island, a ferry ride from Portland, but my wife has been a big fucking baby a bit recalcitrant on that front.

schlock corridor (WilliamC), Wednesday, 24 July 2013 23:43 (twelve years ago)

mookieproof, Thursday, 25 July 2013 14:47 (twelve years ago)

this weather is too weird. I can't even really process it. I feel disturbed and uneasy.
the forecast for much of august (yeah I know there's no way to really forecast a month) is all mid 70s etc., and that makes me uneasy too.
I can wrap my brain around a heat wave, but I can't wrap my brain around a cool summer.

chinavision!, Thursday, 25 July 2013 14:53 (twelve years ago)

mid 70's and rain. nothing but gray and middling temperatures, and presumably humidity. no reason to live.

chinavision!, Thursday, 25 July 2013 14:54 (twelve years ago)

Oh, in that case I won't mind not going to the beach so much if I go back to work.

Tottenham Heelspur (in orbit), Thursday, 25 July 2013 14:55 (twelve years ago)

If this temp could hold for tomorrow too, I can wear a suit to my interview in peace and not in sweatiness. That would be nice.

Tottenham Heelspur (in orbit), Thursday, 25 July 2013 14:58 (twelve years ago)

I want to live where August is always mid-70s and rainy. We moved to Chicago in August in the middle of a week-long run of 60 degree highs. Having nothing to compare it with and so not knowing that was unusual, I was convinced we would freeze to death and die by October.

Lawyer... SUAVE... (carl agatha), Thursday, 25 July 2013 15:01 (twelve years ago)

august was gonna be my beachgoing month.

chinavision!, Thursday, 25 July 2013 15:04 (twelve years ago)

Xpost I did. RIP me.

Jeff, Thursday, 25 July 2013 15:04 (twelve years ago)

;_____;

Well maybe it'll surprise all of us and be dangerously hot and children and the elderly will have to be evacuated to cooling centers, and stray cats will die in sun-baked empty lots. IS THAT WHAT YOU WANT???

xp

Tottenham Heelspur (in orbit), Thursday, 25 July 2013 15:05 (twelve years ago)

WmC, next summer you can consider joining me for the SABR con in HOUSTON. I can't wait to see which month.

mookieproof, Thursday, 25 July 2013 15:09 (twelve years ago)

I don't know what I really want anymore. just a little sun I guess.
