Did I ever tell you about the time that I lived in a Columbia attic apartment with no air conditioning? Setting box fans domino-style on the stairs to blow air from the living room didn't work.

Many of you saw me angry about this on twitter/FB but I found a kitten in front of my house today, left in a box on the sunny sidewalk in this heat. Monsters!

FFM, if I were driving distance I would be strongly lobbying Jeff to let us come get that kitten because it is ADORABLE and it would match Francie.

I will try to snap chat the little thing later :) Wish she could chill with Francie too! Hope I can find a home for her before my sister falls completely in love, neither of us have vet money really!

man I want to get home now just to check in on the cats, force them to drink water, etc.

chinavision!, Friday, 19 July 2013 20:02 (twelve years ago)

I stopped worrying about leaving Francie at home on hot days when I found her napping directly against the back sliding glass door, behind the curtain where there was no air circulating, fully in the sun on a 90-something degree day when the AC was going in the living room. She's a black cat, too, so she was hot to the touch, the dummy. Anyway, we keep the blinds down (except for a one for Francie to peek out of) and the ceiling fans going and only one part of our apartment gets direct sunlight so it is reasonably cool during the day.

Benson is awful in the heat so I leave the air on for him. I'm worried about the power going out while I'm at work and me not knowing it and him roasting. :(

Just biked home in 93 F heat with probably a 10 mph headwind, with this elevation change: http://cyclemeter.com/7cd034d14c9b8c48/Cycle-20130719-1546?r=e . I probably lost 5 lbs on this ride.

It's 97 here and we moved into our house 3 days ago. We have one window AC that we keep moving from room to room but actually doing any unpacking/installing is more or less impossible.

Chantal Anchorman (admrl), Friday, 19 July 2013 21:18 (twelve years ago)

The AC was causing the window next to it to rattle annoyingly so we went to raise and lower that adjacent window and all of a sudden the fucking sash came out of the frame altogether. So yeah. At least the living room is well ventilated now.

Thelema & Louise (Jon Lewis), Friday, 19 July 2013 21:22 (twelve years ago)

temp gauge in my folks' car yesterday read 42 degrees which they say is the hottest they've ever seen inside a car.

xxxp Cardboard covered in aluminum foil, and saran wrap the edges for a good seal, STAT!!!

Tottenham Heelspur (in orbit), Friday, 19 July 2013 21:43 (twelve years ago)

laurel is that better than the plastic accordion thing that comes with a window a/c?

also if i die on the subway tonight you can have my window a/c.

caek, Friday, 19 July 2013 21:45 (twelve years ago)

Entertaining thoughts of your demise now fyi.

I always tape around the edges of those accordion things b/c sometimes they start to retract/don't totally seal. Esp if you leave them in all winter, you don't want air coming in the edges.

Tottenham Heelspur (in orbit), Friday, 19 July 2013 21:47 (twelve years ago)

I mean if we all lined our windows with aluminum foil, our apts would prob all be a good deal cooler? Right?

Tottenham Heelspur (in orbit), Friday, 19 July 2013 21:48 (twelve years ago)

well, they would stay cooler for longer, ja, but they would stay hot for longer too.

ok, i'm setting off now. wish me luck.

caek, Friday, 19 July 2013 21:54 (twelve years ago)

Oh I have t even started getting ready. Prob get there 7ish?

Tottenham Heelspur (in orbit), Friday, 19 July 2013 21:56 (twelve years ago)

ish yes.

caek, Friday, 19 July 2013 21:57 (twelve years ago)

looks like my veg is bolting without fully growing thanks to sudden increase in heat. I'm not used to growing things yet so I guess this is something you always have to look out for. But on the other hand things sem to be blooming that hadn't before.
Just wish I hadn't put several ssunflowers in a container with much shorter plants. Cos I'm not sure the smaller ones're getting any benefit out of this. Sun being blocked away by the taller ones. Well everything grew from seed and i wasn't fully thinking what taht effect would be so now I know for next time.

Stevolende, Friday, 19 July 2013 22:03 (twelve years ago)

I am envious of in orbit/caek meet up, even if it is occurring in the seventh circle of hell :(

quincie, Friday, 19 July 2013 22:46 (twelve years ago)

Bolting is a thing, it happens and is a bummer, but you can't do anything about it except try to find more heat-resistant varieties next time. What kind of veg are we talking?

Finally got some relief here via a brief thunderstorm. (Tornado warnings outside of the city.) I'm looking at an electrical storm through the window right now, but I can't tell how close it is--10 or 15 km, I'm guessing. Weekend is supposed to be pleasant.

long chinese radishes for the most part. Think I planted them too close together and initially in a too short container. Subsequently moved them into a much deeper one and they're still very short but now have flowers coming off the top. Well growing them was an enjoyable experience. Will do them differently if I do them again next year, I think it's to late to start again this year.

Stevolende, Saturday, 20 July 2013 07:08 (twelve years ago)

I dunno about chinese radishes, but every radish (cherry belle, french breakfast, snoglobe, etc) I've ever grown has bolted to shit at the slightest hint of summer heat. They germinate and put out foliage, but never develop a nice root. I am zone 7b (US) and seed them in February and March; no luck with seeds in April and thereafter.

quincie, Saturday, 20 July 2013 07:26 (twelve years ago)

Started getting heavy thunderstorms here about midnight last night, and it's still raining now. It broke the heat, but now we have flash flood warnings again because it dumped 4" of water in parts of the county overnight.
