Casuistry and CaptainZep are officially too good for me.

$V£N! (blueski), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 13:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I am at the point where, failing any opening game errors, I am evenly matched with GP, I think. He might be a smidge better.

I have to say, I'm completely disappointed about the blunder that ended our last game, which was quite the game. I was curious how the rest of the game was going to wind out. I think I had a slight advatage of position and time but even a single rook is a menace and bishop + knight mates are arduous.

Casuistry (Chris P), Thursday, 5 May 2005 10:15 (twenty-one years ago)

But now it's 4:15am and I can go to sleep! Perhaps I will wake up to a glorious rererematch.

Casuistry (Chris P), Thursday, 5 May 2005 10:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Casuistry and Sundar - sorry for the delay - my home broadband has crashed and I'm waiting for an engineer to come, and here at work redhotpawn.com is blocked - arggghhhhhh. I'll probably go round to a friend's to pick up my email tomorrow if no engineer tonight, so I'll move then.

Si Carter (Si Carter), Friday, 6 May 2005 10:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes! That game was the game. I went to bed and apparently woke up idiotic, but still! I am much more convinced by chess, now.

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Friday, 6 May 2005 11:37 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm surprised causistry resigned our game so soon. i had worked out all kinds of crafty manoeuvres to play around with haha.

puzzleworth really ought to take the first win vs me now, only he can mess it up from this point. mmm, the sweet prospects of retirement awaits.

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 14:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Heh, Ken, it was completely hopeless! You were up a piece, had fantastic positioning, and probably had a few dozen tempi on me.

But I will try again at some point. You are my windmill, Ken, and I have my quixotic quest. Or something.

Soon I will be ready for another sally with GP.

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 20:01 (twenty-one years ago)

GP, do you want to take a stab at annotating that game?

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 20:02 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd love to! My finals start in three days though - I shouldn't really even be thinking about chess. In two-and-a-half weeks I'll be dead keen to play again and anote and stuff...

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 21:13 (twenty-one years ago)

All right, revive and rechallenge when you're ready.

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 22:18 (twenty-one years ago)

You guys! Julia told me to tell you guys that she's not going to be able to have Internet access for several days -- I believe she said 7 - 10. She just moved, see, and her Internet connections have yet to be, well, connected. And it's going to take awhile for them to get connected. So she'll have to hold off on the game playing for now.

Goodbye Indian Summer (Dee the Lurker), Friday, 13 May 2005 03:06 (twenty-one years ago)

ok I was NSW under 16 champion in about 1983 and haven't played since... but I am going to jump in for a game soon...

moley, Friday, 13 May 2005 08:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Uh oh. Well, bring it on!

Casuistry (Chris P), Friday, 13 May 2005 17:55 (twenty-one years ago)

You will crush us like small, small bugs probably, but yes! Bring it!

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Friday, 13 May 2005 19:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I've either got a lot dumber or everyone's got a lot better. Or a bit of both.

Sundar (sundar), Friday, 13 May 2005 19:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Sundar, hit me!

For those of you interested in "realtime" I've been playing on FICS, www.freechess.org, which has a rather Unix-y interface but which is pretty great once you figure out how it works (and once you get a graphical interface). My nick there is, unsurprisingly, "Casuistry" (though I will probably not be back on until Saturday).

Casuistry (Chris P), Friday, 13 May 2005 20:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Also: I am terrible at blitz chess. Terrible.

Casuistry (Chris P), Friday, 13 May 2005 20:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Mate in three I think Ken!

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Saturday, 14 May 2005 11:38 (twenty-one years ago)

WORDS I HAVE LONGED TO TYPE

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Saturday, 14 May 2005 11:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I smell the mate there as well.

Casuistry (Chris P), Saturday, 14 May 2005 17:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm reading up on things, and it seems that ChessOps is not up on the latest developments in "theory". I'm both awed and disturbed by the seeming quest for the Perfect Chess Game, which leads to books being published with names like "15. ...f3!? : Rethinking the Dzlofoski Defence".

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 16 May 2005 00:45 (twenty-one years ago)

IT'S OVER!

I am toying with playing chess with... pieces.

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Monday, 16 May 2005 13:06 (twenty-one years ago)

starryschessclub is still open for rubbish business if anyone fancies completely pwn1ng!

Lucretia My Reflection (Lucretia My Reflection), Monday, 16 May 2005 13:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Congratulations, GP!

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 16 May 2005 19:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Oo, nice bishop fork!

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 16 May 2005 19:39 (twenty-one years ago)

It wasn't in a game with any of you, but I'm pretty pleased to have made my first spiffy sacrefice, though admittedly it's only a bishop getting sacreficed. (If Black had played 13 ...Nf5 or ...Ng6 I was planning 14.Nxf7 Rxf7 (or else moving the Q away, endangering it to the revealed check) 15. Qx[wherever the knight went], with Q(orB)xf7 likely to follow and possibly a queen trade, who knows, which would leave me with both rooks against a rook and two bishops. So maybe I'd have done something else there. Or maybe it was a fundamentally unsound plan. It was certainly exciting.

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 02:27 (twenty-one years ago)

GP vs. Si Carter now, pls.

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 15:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I have challenged!

Si Carter (Si Carter), Thursday, 19 May 2005 22:39 (twenty-one years ago)

omg schoolboy error from Tiefschwarz allows me to record my first victory against the Gregster, and I only took one of his pieces.

$V£N! (blueski), Saturday, 21 May 2005 06:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Just to let you guys know (again) -- Julia MIGHT be getting back her online access in the next 24 hours, but absolutely will be online by Monday night. She told me this in a phone convo we had earlier in the evening, right before her crappy cell phone cut out on her again. I'm not sure when she'll be ready to rejoin you guys, but it should be fairly soon, so the expected celebrations and "welcome back"s should be soon forthcoming.

Goodbye Indian Summer (Dee the Lurker), Saturday, 21 May 2005 07:03 (twenty-one years ago)

If you had patience you would have gotten such an error out of me too.

(Actually, looking at that game, it's totally baffling. Why 4...Nb8? Why did White challenge the bishop, and then not take the exchange? I understand not wanting to mess up the King-castle pawn structure, but then why invite the exchange in the first place?)

xpost -- Yay! Julia is missed.

Casuistry (Chris P), Saturday, 21 May 2005 07:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Grah! Well played Stevem!

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Saturday, 21 May 2005 08:56 (twenty-one years ago)

More challenges please! My RHP name is Pwn66.

Si Carter (Si Carter), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 22:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Have you played Ken C yet?

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 22:21 (twenty-one years ago)

going right to the wire between myself and captainzep right now: http://www.redhotpawn.com/gameanalysis/boardhistory.php?gameid=1133782

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Friday, 27 May 2005 15:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I haven't yet. Btw, this one of ours is going to the wire, looks like.

Si Carter (Si Carter), Sunday, 29 May 2005 07:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Si has outbrained me.

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Sunday, 29 May 2005 15:20 (twenty-one years ago)

haha.. sorry stevem :))

rematch again?

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 12:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I was just getting my confidence back after beating Greg and holding out for over 50 moves against CaptainZep (this match still going on)...only to get completely destroyed by casuistry's rampant queen, and a beaten in just FOUR moves by ken. new low.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 13:02 (twenty-one years ago)

omg check out si carter's rating!

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 15:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, it's provisional though, so don't trust it. When I used to play over the board my rating was about 1700. But as I say that was 15-odd years ago!

Si..Carter (SiC@rter), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 15:30 (twenty-one years ago)

You should try playing against someone who has a higher rating, then.

I tried very hard not to give you an inch in this game but I did and you grabbed it. I'm still hoping for at least a draw but we'll see.

Stevem, I apologize for tromping all over you with my queen. I don't know why you first developed that knight to a3 but don't do that again. ;-)

And watch out for that Scholar's mate. Someone did that to me not long ago on FICS and I felt like a maroon.

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 01:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Having overworked myself against Si I am just playing ballistically against Sundar. I'll give him a proper challenge next time.

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 01:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Play against someone with a higher rating? What, and possibly lose? But I'm trying to beat ken's winning streak :)

Actually, I don't think the ratings mean a huge amount unless you've played a lot of games - I've just beaten someone with a rating of 1660 who missed a mate in 1, but a 1200 is giving me a good game at the mo.

Si.C@rter (SiC@rter), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 17:49 (twenty-one years ago)

btw good game that one

Si.C@rter (SiC@rter), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 18:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanks, it was good. The only time my attention really flagged was after you had moved your queen, towards the end, and forked me -- I forgot that your queen had moved and that therefore you might now be able to check me in one move. Oops.

The ratings seem fairly accurate once they're past provisional. We all miss mates in one occasionally... well, many of us.

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 19:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Don't remind me - as a teenager I lost £50 prize money in a tournament doing that. And that was a lot of dosh in 1984!

Si.C@rter (SiC@rter), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 19:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Another weird one - my opponent just resigned this game, which I'm sure is a draw?

Si.C@rter (SiC@rter), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 20:01 (twenty-one years ago)

When I click that link I get a list of my games.

Teh HoBB (the pirate king), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 20:05 (twenty-one years ago)

How odd. Try this instead.

Si.C@rter (SiC@rter), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 20:42 (twenty-one years ago)
