xp Here, I mean.

potatoes-in-law (Je55e), Monday, 15 July 2013 19:30 (twelve years ago)

I grew up in the South. I remember the heatwave where the high temp never dropped below 100º for three weeks. I've partied in New Orleans in July where you had to wring your clothes out at the end of the night (or sometime the next day.)

So I had this "dry heat" thing down when we made the road trip to Vegas with a three-day stay somewhere between Tucson and El Paso. And while we were walking across this quad toward an art gallery on the University of Arizona campus, and the world shifted sideways, and the next thing I knew was my friends standing over me, helping me up, I fully realized then that the degrees of hot are wide.

pplains, Monday, 15 July 2013 19:33 (twelve years ago)

haha yes I think for southerners a dry heat *feels* less intense but it's probably just as stressful, if not more, on the body.

ryan, Monday, 15 July 2013 19:34 (twelve years ago)

Yeah I just could not. It's cooler in my nabe than most other parts of the city and if I stay outside for too long I just get sick. It's something like chronic pain, in a lesser way, in that the physical discomfort just takes more energy to function around and after a while I don't have the emotional resources anymore.

Tottenham Heelspur (in orbit), Monday, 15 July 2013 19:36 (twelve years ago)

Oh yeah. I remember a multi-week over 100 heatwave many years ago when I lived on the third floor of a house without AC, and just lying on the floor with a fan blowing directly on me and crying because I hadn't slept more than an hour or two in days because it was just so so so hot.

Lawyer... SUAVE... (carl agatha), Monday, 15 July 2013 19:40 (twelve years ago)

It's eight degrees hotter in NYC right now than it is in Little Rock. This has been a strange year.

pplains, Monday, 15 July 2013 19:41 (twelve years ago)

Lying on the floor because the BED was too hot to touch, with a wringing wet towel over me and the fan blowing...hello, Jersey City Summer 2000 or so. Taking a shower with the cold FULL ON and not being able to put a body part outside the water stream because the air was oven-like--that was a bad year.

Tottenham Heelspur (in orbit), Monday, 15 July 2013 19:44 (twelve years ago)

jesus wept this is dreadful.

something is wrong with the local weather when i am looking forward to visiting little rock and west texas in august

caek, Monday, 15 July 2013 19:45 (twelve years ago)

Stay in your room as much as poss, caek, the next 3 days or so are going to be even worse. It's not so bad here in the Sty if you don't move around but I wouldn't want to be anywhere else in the city.

Tottenham Heelspur (in orbit), Monday, 15 July 2013 19:48 (twelve years ago)

oh god kill me.

caek, Monday, 15 July 2013 19:52 (twelve years ago)

nah jokes it's ok, but yeah, it feels very still up here. leaving the building to go to a postbox felt like getting punched in the face.

i'm lucky that my apt and my office are a block apart and the walk is mostly in shade. i need to go down to TJ's or whole foods this week, but i'd rather eat ice cubes than ride the subway right now. the good news is that i upgraded my a/c and sitting next to it last night i think i got freezer burn, which was lovely.

thinking of getting rid of the beard but worried about the tanlines.

caek, Monday, 15 July 2013 19:53 (twelve years ago)

Sooner rather than later, more time to re-up the face tan/before the head gets too far gone.

Tottenham Heelspur (in orbit), Monday, 15 July 2013 19:59 (twelve years ago)

Poor NYers. You have all of my sympathy. Or a lot of it, anyway.

Lawyer... SUAVE... (carl agatha), Monday, 15 July 2013 20:02 (twelve years ago)

the global warming shit and the environmental aspects are really daunting and weigh heavily on my mind. i also think of the elderly and people who are really severely affected by the heat in the immediate sense.

so i feel a little weird about saying it but i really love heatwaves, or at least aspects of them. i don't know if i could live somewhere where it's this hot and humid year-round but i appreciate it when it comes and when i know it's going to be here for a week or so and then pass. the child in me enjoys it, in the same way that i really love blizzards even though they cause so much disruption.

i guess the way in which heatwaves are "events" that bring people together in some way, in the sense that everyone is collectively experiencing this thing that is impossible to avoid and allows people to connect and have some shared experience. kind of like the huge 2003 blackout, it was a really wonderful experience in many ways.

i haven't turned on the AC yet. it hasn't been too bad at night despite many days this summer rising above 90.

marcos, Monday, 15 July 2013 20:06 (twelve years ago)

See, I don't mind blizzards so much like you mention, but most of the time, heatwaves down here don't go away until Halloween.

Except this year where it's 65º at night and the grass in the backyard barely grows.

pplains, Monday, 15 July 2013 20:19 (twelve years ago)

the entire week in the NY area is going to be in the 90s (RealFeel® 120º), and i have no air conditioning in my bedroom. this will be fun.

Spectrum, Monday, 15 July 2013 20:26 (twelve years ago)

if you have multiple windows get some fans. like said i haven't turned on the AC yet this summer and it really hasn't been too bad. we do have multiple fans and even if it's like 92 in the apartment having air circulating makes a big difference

marcos, Monday, 15 July 2013 20:27 (twelve years ago)

the inventor of RealFeel® needs his ass kicked

playwright Greg Marlowe, secretly in love with Mary (Dr Morbius), Monday, 15 July 2013 20:39 (twelve years ago)

Spectrum: Freeze a large soda bottle full of water, wrap in a dish towel, and sleep with it in your arms/held against your chest if you can sleep that way. Put ice packs on your pulse points for reals: forehead, neck, wrists, behind your knees. If your bed is literally too hot to comfortably sleep on, soak a bath towel in cold water and lie on it with the fan turned on you. None of this will make you subjectively comfortably cool but it will objectively bring your body temp down.

Tottenham Heelspur (in orbit), Monday, 15 July 2013 20:57 (twelve years ago)

Ice packs on pulse points tip OTM.

Also read that you can wet a bandana and wrap it around your neck then sit/lie in front of a fan to keep yourself cool. The evaporating water cools the blood at your jugular and makes the rest of you cooler, or something.

Lawyer... SUAVE... (carl agatha), Monday, 15 July 2013 20:59 (twelve years ago)

You'd all wake up dead if you were in South Korea.

pplains, Monday, 15 July 2013 21:06 (twelve years ago)

Misery loves company: a week ago I was telling S that I wasn't going to make it through a Baja summer and that we were going to have to GTFO much sooner than anticipated. Now that I've seen the temps back home in DC, I am feeling more amenable to sticking around.

There is something especially maddening about being in what looks like paradise (gorgeous beach, mountains, huge crazy cacti) but you are afraid to go out into it during daylight hours. Like, hey, I should be out paddleboarding or fishing or whatevs, but oops can't do that why because death.

quincie, Monday, 15 July 2013 23:53 (twelve years ago)

In the tub. If I drink a little more whiskey I fall asleep faster. But then I prob wake up earlier.

chinavision!, Tuesday, 16 July 2013 02:47 (twelve years ago)

How low can I get my core temp for max sleep?

chinavision!, Tuesday, 16 July 2013 02:47 (twelve years ago)

I get abuse for being electronically immobile, but I'm not dense enough to live in post-climate change New York without A/C.

I do this to myself, but honestly I kind of enjoy it.
Just glad yr not at the all star game. Fire has shut down the whole 7 train.
