Pocket vs Instapaper vs Readability, what do you use? (if any)

Jeff, Friday, 12 July 2013 15:43 (twelve years ago)

pocket for sync and iphone reading

readability on desktop to actually read long articles (does better job of formatting)

caek, Friday, 12 July 2013 15:47 (twelve years ago)

I use Safari reading list which has the killer feature of updating in the background

stet, Friday, 12 July 2013 20:56 (twelve years ago)

instapaper lol

markers, Friday, 12 July 2013 21:04 (twelve years ago)

hopefully the betaworks ppl will bring that to instapaper at some point thanks to ios 7

My damn screen is dark and resetting it isn't fixing it.

Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Friday, 26 July 2013 03:29 (twelve years ago)

anyone fuck around w/ calca yet?

markers, Wednesday, 31 July 2013 03:10 (twelve years ago)

http://calca.io

markers, Wednesday, 31 July 2013 03:10 (twelve years ago)

oh man that's cute.

stefon taylor swiftboat (s.clover), Wednesday, 31 July 2013 03:22 (twelve years ago)

i think maybe it makes some sense on an ipad but i'm not writing pseudocode and markdown on an iphone.

would like to try it out on a mac but it's app store only, so fuck that.

tbh don't really feel like my life is missing an app that's lower level than soulver and higher level than a python prompt though.

caek, Wednesday, 31 July 2013 03:30 (twelve years ago)

and also the idea that symbolic algebra in worksheets is a new class of program (via j gruber) is nonsense btw

caek, Wednesday, 31 July 2013 03:35 (twelve years ago)

integrated units system tho, and inline google search.

but i agree i don't exactly have a use-case for it.

stefon taylor swiftboat (s.clover), Wednesday, 31 July 2013 03:54 (twelve years ago)

google search seems handy.

integrated units is definitely nice, and something i would use, although again not new. it's in soulver, mathematica and python, which i guess are the kinda alternatives for me.

caek, Wednesday, 31 July 2013 04:34 (twelve years ago)

Calca is pretty nice; much more useful than Soulver.

I kinda feel like there's a gap for something great here, something with the graphics and text processing of Mathematica, but without its hairy language, combined w/the Calca whole-sheet recalc, MPW's Commando and OneNote's type-anywhere.

I am not smart enough to figure out what it is, but I know I want it.

stet, Wednesday, 31 July 2013 09:38 (twelve years ago)

mathematica syntax in latest v is much easier with the wolfram alpha integration, can just type e.g. plot y=x and you're off

I "know someone" who has seen mathematica running on an iPad btw

so right now i have a dedicated white noise generator that sits under my bed. does anyone know of an ios (ipad) app that's a relatively simple _brown_ noise generator that also has a sleep timer? there's some complicated shit out there that can throw up all kinds of sounds and there's simply noise too but i'm wonder if anyone knows of anything else.

markers, Saturday, 10 August 2013 19:30 (twelve years ago)

whaddya got going on in there markers

socki (s1ocki), Saturday, 10 August 2013 19:32 (twelve years ago)

lol

markers, Saturday, 10 August 2013 19:34 (twelve years ago)

all i want is an app that'd run for a few minutes: from about right before the time i get into bed or so until perhaps a little bit after i'm asleep.

markers, Saturday, 10 August 2013 19:37 (twelve years ago)

Have you tried SimplyNoise? I've not tried it myself yet, but it looks like it will do the job.

In the airplane over the .CSS (Le Bateau Ivre), Saturday, 10 August 2013 19:54 (twelve years ago)

Shite, didn't see you mentioned that one already

In the airplane over the .CSS (Le Bateau Ivre), Saturday, 10 August 2013 19:54 (twelve years ago)

Buddha Machine? idk the difference between white and brown noise.

cops on horse (WilliamC), Saturday, 10 August 2013 20:00 (twelve years ago)

yeah Simply Noise looks like it does brown noise + sleep timer, that might be your best bet here.

i too went to college (silby), Saturday, 10 August 2013 20:07 (twelve years ago)

you could make your own brown noise, that's what i do

caek, Saturday, 10 August 2013 20:11 (twelve years ago)

is that a poop joke or

i too went to college (silby), Saturday, 10 August 2013 20:11 (twelve years ago)

idgi?

caek, Saturday, 10 August 2013 20:18 (twelve years ago)

I use Whitenoise by tmsoft.

Jeff, Saturday, 10 August 2013 20:19 (twelve years ago)

thanks everyone. on the desktop it's http://simplynoise.com all the way.

some months back i bought a brown noise track from itunes that's not too long, and i guess i could just put that on and let it cut out to silence when it's done. i think i might try that. i looked at the budda machine though and i'll go check out jeff's thing too right now.

markers, Saturday, 10 August 2013 20:32 (twelve years ago)

we use simply noise when we lived above a bar it worked great

max, Sunday, 11 August 2013 14:34 (twelve years ago)

there's a chance i might've actually found out about that from you. definitely helps me.

markers, Sunday, 11 August 2013 16:41 (twelve years ago)

I had no idea

[Brown noise] decreases in power by 12 dB per octave (40 dB per decade) and, when heard, has a "damped" or "soft" quality compared to white and pink noise. The sound is a low roar resembling a waterfall or heavy rainfall. See also purple noise, which is a 12 dB increase per octave.

Kiarostami bag (milo z), Wednesday, 14 August 2013 03:07 (twelve years ago)

the white on simplynoise would increase my stress levels, I think. So hissy

Kiarostami bag (milo z), Wednesday, 14 August 2013 03:08 (twelve years ago)

brown!

markers, Wednesday, 14 August 2013 03:11 (twelve years ago)

Nice, milo. I could live with that, though the desk fan that blows on my face all night is pretty good, too. Until the fan death.

potatoes-in-law (Je55e), Wednesday, 14 August 2013 03:16 (twelve years ago)

is fan death when the fan dies or when you die from having the fan on all night and it steals your soul or whatever that supposedly does to you?

i too went to college (silby), Wednesday, 14 August 2013 04:59 (twelve years ago)

I prefer brown over white noise.

Jeff, Wednesday, 14 August 2013 11:58 (twelve years ago)

Grey noise is pretty sweet

anyone fuck around w/ this?

http://www.macstories.net/stories/editorial-for-ipad-review/

markers, Friday, 16 August 2013 16:50 (twelve years ago)

right now i have iawriter on my ipad, which i don't really use, although i think it's a minimal thing v. this which, w/ python shit and all, is not

markers, Friday, 16 August 2013 16:56 (twelve years ago)

iawriter is really really good if you want to hook up yr bluetooth keyboard to yr phone - you basically get a full screen notetaking app that syncs with your computer/s.

I just take my keyboard and phone to the library or if I've got serious travel these days and use that combination.

if drafts had the same full screen option, I wd be v v happy.

Fizzles, Friday, 16 August 2013 18:00 (twelve years ago)

Iawriter fan here too, never thought I'd get used to it but I can write articles with it now on my iPad. Editorial looks next level awesomeness!

In the airplane over the .CSS (Le Bateau Ivre), Friday, 16 August 2013 18:26 (twelve years ago)

ok that review of editorial is insanely long. it lets you type text and shows it to you right. also i guess scripting?

maybe he doesn't need a better text editor, but just you know a better editor, huh.
