xxp - Apparently the '50s were also a time of really oool lighting fixtures, but also really uncomfortable chairs

Lee626, Sunday, 7 July 2013 03:38 (ten years ago) link

hehe cafeteria style; keep your back straight.

Sébastien, Sunday, 7 July 2013 03:42 (ten years ago) link

We made ivy gourd in peanut-tamarind curry sauce and watched House of the Devil.

something of an astrological coup (tipsy mothra), Sunday, 7 July 2013 03:42 (ten years ago) link

The curry was good, the movie was fine. Feel like they both could have used a few more ingredients.

♫ "da house of the devil is upon you"♫ lovely boringly retro movie, i defended it on in the new horror movie thread

Sébastien, Sunday, 7 July 2013 03:49 (ten years ago) link

didn't feel like getting beer, made hot chocolate with vodka in it instead

i don't even have an internet (Hurting 2), Sunday, 7 July 2013 03:51 (ten years ago) link

I hope the proprietors of that cafeteria realize they have a hole in their roof - there's some serious mold growth on the ceiling towards the right wall

Lee626, Sunday, 7 July 2013 03:55 (ten years ago) link

Yeah I like Ti West's retro shtick. We watched The Innkeepers a few months ago. I wish he spent a little more time on plot mechanics, but plot wasn't the strong point of the movies he's paying tribute to. I really like how long he's willing to go -- in a short movie -- with basically nothing happening.

i embraced the lameless of it as it was unfolding in front of me, made me think of sat. afternoons watching some Commander USA's Groovie Movies , lame program but you sort of had to solider through it because it was somewhat interesting "information", rare back then. also, makes room for one's imagination, to make it better so you did not waste your time on it. the guy would probably hate my endorsing, i am so unreliable.

Sébastien, Sunday, 7 July 2013 04:17 (ten years ago) link

haha spider got crushed but i'm ok with it

Sébastien, Sunday, 7 July 2013 04:31 (ten years ago) link

keeping it boring.

haha i see that. but it wouldn't be the '50s without a CRACK IN THE FACADE (omg call todd haynes).

Accidentally bought two pints at the pub i'm visiting alone and now look like a mentalist sitting at the bar with two drinks. Fuck it, time to read RIP NSFW, opinions of me will not be lowered.

Fanois och Alexander (Merdeyeux), Saturday, 13 July 2013 21:28 (ten years ago) link

haha how did you manage that?

^do not heed if you rate me (wins), Saturday, 13 July 2013 21:29 (ten years ago) link

I guess I was misheard and I'm an idiot who thinks it would be terribly rude or something to say "you misheard me". Also I told all my friends to meet here before we went dancing and well they don't seem to have agreed to that plan. So here I am.

In the smallest hotel room in New York. Tonight plans have fallen through. Pondering whether to wander the streets or do some work.

Reading Robin Wood's Hollywood from Vietnam to Reagan while periodically making sure my bf is, in fact, working on his research paper.

def (of the ones i read). hermione timetraveling to class is my favorite thing in the series.

"""""""""""""stalin""""""""""" (difficult listening hour), Sunday, 14 July 2013 03:25 (ten years ago) link

i like the prisoner of azkaban too. although i disagree with jk rowling's decision to introduce time travel into the harry potter universe because once time travel is introduced it throws everything else into question. why not use that shit all the time? and if it is "too dangerous" to do that, why allow hermione to use it just to take a 5th class?

jesus

Treeship, Sunday, 14 July 2013 03:42 (ten years ago) link

I love P of Az the movie because Cuaron makes Hogwart's a real place that exists in nature; it's so beautiful and the dementors were so terrible, strikes such a good balance imo

my favorite book is either Azkaban or Order of the Phoenix. I love the Sirius storyline so much.

marvelling how well Rembrandt Pussyhorse and Super Roots 6 go together as companion pieces.

drawing up some listening lists for the near future, and of course, milling around SNA looking for any action. Probably will catch myself up on the Trayvon thread here soon...then going to spend most of the rest of the night (hopefully) reading and writing which I am thinking may not be so boring.

the next night we ate Wale (Drugs A. Money), Sunday, 14 July 2013 03:46 (ten years ago) link

i really like all the TIME! stuff: the camera dollying through the clock, someone reading stephen hawking near the beginning. i dunno why i don't think it's dumb. one of my favorite kids' movies ever. xp

"""""""""""""stalin""""""""""" (difficult listening hour), Sunday, 14 July 2013 03:47 (ten years ago) link

yeah the time motif is wonderfully executed. and the "chapters" showing each season passing <3
