Since when was cracker derogatory for Amish
― how's life, Friday, 28 June 2013 17:55 (thirteen years ago)
thought that was the lead in Pippin
― Neanderthal, Friday, 28 June 2013 17:57 (thirteen years ago)
tbh, I wouldn't hesitate to call that guy a cracker. Maybe we all have a lot of growing up to do....
― Moodles, Friday, 28 June 2013 18:00 (thirteen years ago)
I thought that was the lead actor in a Oberlin College production of The Hobbit.

we can never grow as a people until we treat the least of our tumbler wites white folk with decency and respect.
― Neanderthal, Friday, 28 June 2013 18:11 (thirteen years ago)
I've never heard the word cracker used except in the context of white ppl saying its unfair that they aren't allowed to use racial epithets without censure whereas anyone is free to use the word cracker against them
― Treeship, Friday, 28 June 2013 18:32 (thirteen years ago)
wait that is supposed to be funny right?

my first thought on seeing that actually was that it had something to do with the band

I hear "cracker" solely from hip friends who boast about not owning any records that aren't world music or jazz.

fwiw the oft cited kleck study is pretty well debunked here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gun_violence_in_the_United_States#Self-protection
Kleck's figures apparently showed that guns were used many times more often for self-defense in burglaries than there were reported incidents of burglaries of premises whose occupants were awake and armed with firearms

This thread will be a year old (and probably hit ten thousand posts) this month. Can't really believe there was a time when it wasn't part of my ILX life.

yeah it's kinda funny to think back that FB at one time wasn't a place where you merely splattered memes all over your Timeline every day. hell even the "Like" feature didn't come around until 2009. I remember the early days where you'd put up a status and that was about it. were you able to comment on people's statuses originally? I joined in 2006 but didn't use it much until 2008.
― Neanderthal, Tuesday, 2 July 2013 02:54 (thirteen years ago)
I realize now how silly it is to say "the early days" about a website that's less than 10 years old

I like the way they formatted that to make it look like some Benjamin Franklin shit. By the way, Benjamin Franklin actually DID write lots of life advice (see his autobiography) and it's generally pretty kick-ass. If people restricted their FB inspiration rectangles to B-Frank quotes we wouldn't be having this thread.

For what it's worth, I never see anything like this stuff on my feed. I think FB looks very different depending on your age. 40-year-olds don't meme, as far as I can tell.
― Guayaquil (eephus!), Tuesday, 2 July 2013 03:50 (thirteen years ago)
well, my page doesn't look like that so much anymore because you can set settings by individual, so most of the people who used to put those shitty eCards up every day, I either unfollowed or limited to just status updates showing in my feed.
such a great feature.

Most of the stuff like this that I see is from my aunt, who is right around 80, and whom I couldn't bear to put on block. Presumably lots of people that I've long since switched to "only show important posts" are clicking share on shit like this all the time.
