Tbf you want real nails to make patriarchy smashing tools. It's not enough to scratch the patriarchy. Xp

Treeship, Tuesday, 25 June 2013 20:29 (twelve years ago)

I've reached the age where the direct approach works best.

Wish Laurel could do my Nomi Malone-esque revenge nails. I'll use them to scratch the patriarchy.

homosexual II, Tuesday, 25 June 2013 20:30 (twelve years ago)

I dont think i've ever "approached" anyone with explicit romantic intent tbh

Treeship, Tuesday, 25 June 2013 20:32 (twelve years ago)

lol a soccer friend wrote a well-intentioned Abby Wamback piece the oth day which I stopped reading when I got to references to women athletes scratching and clawing their way to the top.

Tottenham Heelspur (in orbit), Tuesday, 25 June 2013 20:32 (twelve years ago)

This is why I ditched the supporters' club, guys, in case you were wondering!

Tottenham Heelspur (in orbit), Tuesday, 25 June 2013 20:33 (twelve years ago)

Speaking of being sexist.

Tottenham Heelspur (in orbit), Tuesday, 25 June 2013 20:34 (twelve years ago)

really? i didn't know that.

I dont think i've ever "approached" anyone with explicit romantic intent tbh

this is absurd
you have never talked to a person/approached a person specifically because you found them appealing in a romantic way?
i can't believe that for 1 second

free your spirit pig (La Lechera), Tuesday, 25 June 2013 20:48 (twelve years ago)

well anytime i find someone appealing in a romantic way i sort of stare at my shoes and try to remember to take breaths, until they go away

乒乓, Tuesday, 25 June 2013 20:50 (twelve years ago)

you're full of it too, mister

Xp LL, i have done that, but not usually with an "end game" like, I want to take this person home/get their #. I was in a relationship for a reaaallly long time though, that ended very recently.

Treeship, Tuesday, 25 June 2013 21:00 (twelve years ago)

i think i only once set out with a long term plan to get into a relationship with a person i'd seen at a distance who look intersting. the plan mostly involved reading books at a bar we both frequented. it worked. thanks, Baader Meinhof gang!

That booby's are HOTTT (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 25 June 2013 21:02 (twelve years ago)

what i do is i friend them on facebook and then post a lot of cool things to my feed, hoping that they'll notice how cool i am

乒乓, Tuesday, 25 June 2013 21:03 (twelve years ago)

hahaha yes

Romantic style in da world (crüt), Tuesday, 25 June 2013 21:04 (twelve years ago)

there shd be a PUA term for Facebook peacocking. i vote Facecocking.

That booby's are HOTTT (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 25 June 2013 21:04 (twelve years ago)

Lol

Treeship, Tuesday, 25 June 2013 21:04 (twelve years ago)

i'm disappointed in all of you (except NV because he put some effort into it, and it worked)

free your spirit pig (La Lechera), Tuesday, 25 June 2013 21:06 (twelve years ago)

don't worry, i blew it in the end

That booby's are HOTTT (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 25 June 2013 21:07 (twelve years ago)

really? i didn't know that.

Yeah, I decided that spending time around people who called women "bitches" was more trouble than it was worth, even if the core of ppl that I was friends with didn't do that--the wider group did. Plus the group msg board was practically wallpapered with swimsuit avatars and naked women in ppl's sig files and men calling other men pussies and I just couldn't.

Tottenham Heelspur (in orbit), Tuesday, 25 June 2013 21:07 (twelve years ago)

it's the same thing, facebook is just a really shitty bar

mh, Tuesday, 25 June 2013 21:07 (twelve years ago)

good point

free your spirit pig (La Lechera), Tuesday, 25 June 2013 21:08 (twelve years ago)

when I was around the roller derby crowd they said "bitches" a whole lot but that was a different context, I would imagine

mh, Tuesday, 25 June 2013 21:08 (twelve years ago)

Facebook wd be improved by complimentary peanuts and the possibility of cocktails, this is true

That booby's are HOTTT (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 25 June 2013 21:09 (twelve years ago)

Lol I guess I surprised rrrobyn and our mutual friend V once by emphatically saying I would never never tell anyone I had a crush on, because that way lies embarrassment for everyone involved.

Tottenham Heelspur (in orbit), Tuesday, 25 June 2013 21:09 (twelve years ago)

awww

I think the people I have for-real crushed on hard are ones that I have seldom approached, and then it builds to this crescendo of me skittering from the room or being super-awkward. Best to approach someone before it gets to that point and they're so super-human that they seem unattainable.

mh, Tuesday, 25 June 2013 21:10 (twelve years ago)

yikes, that sounds gross, io. nothing worse than looking around and realizing that you are surrounded by jerks
having to extricate oneself from situations like that is why i am so reticent to become part of any group tbh!

free your spirit pig (La Lechera), Tuesday, 25 June 2013 21:12 (twelve years ago)

i think i've usually approached people i've had a crush on unless it seemed like a bad idea for a particular reason, but that was all so long ago i cd be wrong

That booby's are HOTTT (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 25 June 2013 21:13 (twelve years ago)

pathological smashriarchy

i didn't even give much of a fuck that you were mod (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 25 June 2013 21:13 (twelve years ago)

also "for real crushed on hard" is not even remotely equal (or even comparable) to "found appealing"

there's an element of far-gone-ness in the former that hasn't been given the chance to ferment in the latter

free your spirit pig (La Lechera), Tuesday, 25 June 2013 21:13 (twelve years ago)

i still remember a lot about my first real crush but mostly embarrassing memories - i was a very, very gauche 16 year-old

That booby's are HOTTT (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 25 June 2013 21:13 (twelve years ago)

Peacocking is a bloody great idea tbh, even if it gets co-opted by PUAs. Everyone should wear something mad glam, if they feel like it.

you may not like it now but you will (Zora), Tuesday, 25 June 2013 21:15 (twelve years ago)

maybe not

That booby's are HOTTT (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 25 June 2013 21:16 (twelve years ago)

in my youth I used to think that appearing in anything other than a nondescript, but clean fashion, was far inferior to having a rich inner life and being a conversationalist or something, but I think I also mostly read Star Wars books and played computer games a lot

mh, Tuesday, 25 June 2013 21:17 (twelve years ago)

i had a phase in my teens when i wore a lot of purple and yellow. and a hat. and beads. i think i'm good for the rest of my life.

That booby's are HOTTT (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 25 June 2013 21:19 (twelve years ago)

I have no probs approaching people, the issue is no one seems worthy of approaching

I am totally sweating this hot bouncer at the club I frequent, though, but he is friends with my ex. So hands off.

homosexual II, Tuesday, 25 June 2013 21:30 (twelve years ago)

i don't like the opposition of our 'evolutionary nature' and being a moral person in contemporary life. i don't think we have some kind of base or bestial nature that needs to be tamed by civilization, however conceived. evolution comprises our whole being, cognition, the works. it's like gravity, it's always on, everywhere, all the time. which makes it meaningless as a guide to proper action. that isn't what it is.

Yeah, eloquently stated.

Treeship, Tuesday, 25 June 2013 22:53 (twelve years ago)

People are primates, and are in constant competition with others.

iana primatologist but bonobos give the lie to this idea, at least if by competition you are assuming something necessarily violent or aggressive.

nagl dude dude dude (ledge), Tuesday, 25 June 2013 23:18 (twelve years ago)

aren't bonobos also the ones that murder each other?

Treeship, Wednesday, 26 June 2013 01:04 (twelve years ago)

ah just looked it up. it's chimps, not bonobos, who are murderers. good job bonobos. keep it up! http://www.realclearscience.com/2011/03/08/bonobos_unlike_chimps_do_not_murder_240136.html

Treeship, Wednesday, 26 June 2013 01:06 (twelve years ago)

competition isn't necessarily violent or aggressive. plants compete for access to sunlight.

Me and my pool noodle (contenderizer), Wednesday, 26 June 2013 01:20 (twelve years ago)

yeah, plants don't need violence, they just gerrymander their voting districts...

Neanderthal, Wednesday, 26 June 2013 01:21 (twelve years ago)

I don't automatically hate face tattoos (this may say something about me), but I do automatically hate NY Giants ones.

pls don't say a jets one would be better

mookieproof, Wednesday, 26 June 2013 01:32 (twelve years ago)

i want one of a plant wearing a jets uniform intercepting a pass from a plant wearing a giants uniform

Treeship, Wednesday, 26 June 2013 01:46 (twelve years ago)

knowing the Jets, it'd probably be them throwing the interception

Neanderthal, Wednesday, 26 June 2013 01:47 (twelve years ago)

look, i didn't choose to be a jets fan. i was born that way.

Treeship, Wednesday, 26 June 2013 02:04 (twelve years ago)

that guy in the plaid fedora posted upthread is like... things could be worse

Treeship, Wednesday, 26 June 2013 02:04 (twelve years ago)

And also, if you can point to a behaviour and say 'yes, this behaviour is more natural than this other behaviour, if I do more of this I will be more natural', you're making a conscious/intellectual choice to do so, which by the oft total bullshit anti-intellectual standard of 'being natural', you're not supposed to do
