I'm about to ditch Stephen Fry because despite loving his work I find him distinctly boring

I find him quite fun; what I can't stand is the way he's now re-Tweeting so much stuff (eg the thing about the blank profile yesterday) because so many of his followers are obviously fucking bell-ends.

From a social-psychology angle I'm fascinated by the way the 'sleb Twitterers deal with having unfettered, two-way access to their fans. Graham Linehan is a joy.

Like any blogger who knows his site is pointless, my greatest hope is that people who follow me are as bored as I am.

okay, Graham Linehan lasted all of eight hours. Waking up to find 110 new tweets, uh, no thanks.

Ah, so that is who all these strange new people following me on twitter is! You're not strangers, you're ILX0rs.

Many of them are. I'd bet some are just random people, though.

I get spammers who don't say anything and disappear within 24 hours anyway. It's all rather creepy in that regard.

I get a little appalled when a client asks me to set up a Twitter account for him. 1) You don't need me to do that. 2) I'm not going to update the fucker, and unless you are, I can't see the point. 3) Who told you this was a fantastic new way to sell things? Because I want to sock that person in the nose.

Actually #3 is conditional -- you can sell things on Twitter, sure. If you make things. But look here client man -- you make auto parts. Trust me when I say that Twitter is not your market.

Technology is routinely fucked over by people who don't get what it's for and go misappropriating it. e.g. Facebook was for SOCIAL networking until old people en masse started hunting down their kids.

And their staff.

And the people journos want to chase for a "story".

It's like passing notes in class. It's not meaningful at all, but it sure is fun.

You know, I'm not sure that it is.

Er, nothing against any particular ilxors, mind, but in my week-or-so of pissfarting around with this thing I've not been particularly compelled by anything yet.

Well, it's pretty reductively only as interesting as the people you follow (or, rather, as interesting as you find the people you follow to be). I guess it depends what you deem an acceptable signal-to-noise ratio: me, I enjoy skimming over the quotidian musings of other people (cf Facebook) and find some of it very entertaining, even if only for a moment or two.

But if you're expecting a non-stop open channel of wit and wisdom, Twitter is probably never going to be the place to go.

Twitter is only good if you follow people you know well enough to actually care about the tiny minutia of their lives. I'd find it intrusive to follow a stranger. (latest big crush excepted, of course.)
