if youre not doing any video rendering you should look at macbook airs

might be worth the extra $150 if you plan on doing any gaming - otherwise i would stick with the 13' for better portability

but yeah, airs might be a better bet too

Do Airs handle heavy Photoshopping well? I'm sort of constitutionally opposed to bumping down to one of those, but I suppose I could investigate.

Also, the only refurbs available for Airs right now are 11", which I may as well get a tablet, no?

i use photoshop for work on my 18 month old air and ive never experienced a slowdown in overall performance. its really not "bumping down" anymore--my gf got a pro at the same time that i got the air and i havent noticed a single benefit to her pro, even when it comes to PS and illustrator stuff, and the air is so much lighter and easier its way preferable to use and carry around

I've got a Samsung screen on my 15" MBP Retina, but the ghosting talk above made me thing I need Applecare. $330 plus tax... and today is my last day to get it so the cheaper Ebay options are out.

I guess if it ever fucks up I'll dunk it in the tub and use renters' insurance.

think less in terms of the specs and more in terms of the form factor

i think it really comes down to whether you prefer the bigger screen of the 15" as opposed to a 13" mbp or mba and whether you'd be willing to put up with the extra 1-2 pounds of weight that entails

I think I'm totally cool with the 13" tbh, after looking them over in the store. At any rate, I'm convinced now that I don't need quad-core vs. dual-core, so the 13" is probably the way to go.

Yes. I wanted retina more for the SSD though.

I have a 15" MBP at work and it's bloody massive compared to the 11". Weighs about as much as a PowerBook 170.

Goes like stink, mind. Think the Retina one is lighter, too.

i hope by the time i'm ready to by a new laptop (knock on wood not for a long time), that macbook airs will be video-capable

I'm really more of a MBP level cartoon watcher than a MBA one.

I've had an MBA for a few years now. It's great. If we're going to nitpick :

- The keyboard feels better on the MBP somehow - having the weight of the machine under the keys makes a slight difference.

- No way of swapping out the hard drive for more storage. You'll be tied to 128 for as long as you own the machine.

Yeah, I made up my mind on this much: I'm not accepting anything less than 512 GB.

yeah the mba's lack of storage can be a pain, otoh what do you really need it for? i put all my mp3s into itunes match and keep my aperture library on an external, works fine

also lack of ethernet port can be annoying

external hard drives are literally the same as internal hard drives, but external. You can convince yourself of this by buying a regular hard drive and slapping it in an enclosure.

i have had so many external hard drives die on me, they are horrible

spinning disk hard drives in general are horrible, tho.

externals are fine. get one with a warranty and clone it/back it up to the cloud.
