there is a nifty little jailbreak tweak that turns off passcode when you are on a designated wifi network, e.i. at home, at work. Passcode turns on when your phone is out of range. Would be nice is Apple stole this idea.

sofatruck, Tuesday, 11 June 2013 19:08 (thirteen years ago)

caek, Tuesday, 11 June 2013 20:06 (thirteen years ago)

so the first thing i thought of when is aw the new pics was the gmail app on the iphone, thin sans serif on white background, i think this looks good

乒乓, Tuesday, 11 June 2013 20:17 (thirteen years ago)

people who are using the dev release seem to be angry

Autumn Almanac, Tuesday, 11 June 2013 21:07 (thirteen years ago)

Yeah got a few dudes here at work that aren't into it (they've had it for like an hour) but all the complaints are like hmmmmmm it's different and colorful and cheesy

Spottie_Ottie_Dope, Tuesday, 11 June 2013 21:50 (thirteen years ago)

i hope the the thin letter stems look better on the phone itself

Nhex, Tuesday, 11 June 2013 22:09 (thirteen years ago)

Will look like ass on a non-Retina device probably.

Operation Gypsy Dildo (silby), Tuesday, 11 June 2013 23:34 (thirteen years ago)

won't run on them. 7 is Retina-only

stet, Wednesday, 12 June 2013 00:08 (thirteen years ago)

(apart from iPad mini, but they haven't even shown it on iPad yet)

stet, Wednesday, 12 June 2013 00:08 (thirteen years ago)

ah, I didn't put the pieces together there. iPad mini obviously has higher pixel density than an iPad 1 or 2 so I guess it'll look good enough.

the REAL Dr Morbius (silby), Wednesday, 12 June 2013 00:30 (thirteen years ago)

the ipads it will support, i think, are 2, "new," fourth gen, and mini

markers, Wednesday, 12 June 2013 00:40 (thirteen years ago)

lol the site just lists "ipad with retina display" but i'm gonna guess "the new ipad" will be fine too

markers, Wednesday, 12 June 2013 00:42 (thirteen years ago)

considering ipad 2 is also on the list that'd be weird to be 2, 4 only

markers, Wednesday, 12 June 2013 00:42 (thirteen years ago)

Are you calling the 3 the 'new ipad'? because it is retina.

I installed the beta on my 4S. I like it so far. Obviously a few bugs and crashes, as to be expected. Auto updating apps in the background is something I missed in the WWDC write-ups, so that was a nice surprise.

sofatruck, Wednesday, 12 June 2013 01:09 (thirteen years ago)

yes.

it won't do airdrop on the 3rd gen ipad

Autumn Almanac, Wednesday, 12 June 2013 01:24 (thirteen years ago)

really feel like not enough's been made of the design of the new airport

I mean, seriously, why

cozen, Wednesday, 12 June 2013 18:16 (thirteen years ago)

better reception or something

markers, Wednesday, 12 June 2013 18:20 (thirteen years ago)

it's just for the extreme and time capsule though

You only need to associate your UDID with a developer account if you want to do a clean install. If you choose 'Update' you are good to go.

More Than a Century With the Polaris Emblem (calstars), Wednesday, 12 June 2013 20:20 (thirteen years ago)

"many of the new icons were (...) designed by (...) Apple’s marketing and communications department, not the app design teams."

That might explain it. But it doesn't make it right.

where would I get the ipsw, and isn't there a risk of apple revoking the cert on an unregistered install?

truth bomb lawyer mean mean pride (Edward III), Thursday, 13 June 2013 07:01 (thirteen years ago)

^This is registering with Apple.

sofatruck, Thursday, 13 June 2013 13:29 (thirteen years ago)

yes, but calstars is saying you *don't* have to register yr UDID with a developer account if you choose update instead of restore

xp... missed that, sorry

sofatruck, Friday, 14 June 2013 00:05 (thirteen years ago)

ok, I sorted it out. running ios 7 on a verizon iphone 5. took about 20 minutes.

first impression: thanks for the windows phone!

FB app is super fast now tho...

truth bomb lawyer mean mean pride (Edward III), Friday, 14 June 2013 04:49 (thirteen years ago)

there are still a few small annoyances and a lot of bugs but for the most part it seems like a big improvement

max, Friday, 14 June 2013 10:29 (thirteen years ago)

e.g. i STILL don't understand why i have to add an alarm to an event for it to show up in my notifications screen. all reminders should show up there, even, maybe especially ones that dont have alarms associated!!!

max, Friday, 14 June 2013 10:30 (thirteen years ago)

can't you give all events an alarm by default? (srs q)

caek, Friday, 14 June 2013 11:05 (thirteen years ago)

yes, but not reminders

max, Friday, 14 June 2013 11:08 (thirteen years ago)

this is not a huge thing just a really weird gap to me. why cant i just pull down my notifications screen, especially now that they have a "today" vertical, and see every single one of my reminders, even the ones that dont have a specific date/time attached

max, Friday, 14 June 2013 11:09 (thirteen years ago)

Slight digression. I got an iPhone 5 this week. It's completely incapable of retaining a signal for more than a minute or so at a time. Causing me no end of grief and possibly the worst phone I've ever owned.

michaellambert, Saturday, 15 June 2013 00:19 (thirteen years ago)

AFAIK iphones have a liberal return policy

More Than a Century With the Polaris Emblem (calstars), Saturday, 15 June 2013 01:18 (thirteen years ago)

you're probably holding it wrong tbh

the REAL Dr Morbius (silby), Saturday, 15 June 2013 02:01 (thirteen years ago)

are you sure you didn't buy an ipod touch

we're up all night to get (s1ocki), Saturday, 15 June 2013 03:44 (thirteen years ago)

A couple months ago I started noticing the dreaded "ghosting" image retention fault on my rMBP. It's an ongoing problem with all the retinas using LG-sourced screens - the Apple Support thread for this problem is over 500 pages. I'd been trying to ignore the fault, but it just got too ridiculous, so I took it to the local Apple Store. Had it back the next day, no charge. New Samsung-sourced screen is slightly warmer, but I code/write mostly in white-on-black these days.

There's an online test to see if you have the problem.

Elvis Telecom, Saturday, 15 June 2013 05:06 (thirteen years ago)

anyway to get iOS7 on iphone w/out a dev a/c?

kenjataimu (cozen), Saturday, 15 June 2013 09:17 (thirteen years ago)

are you sure you didn't buy an ipod touch

Ha! They're sending me a new one.

michaellambert, Saturday, 15 June 2013 10:23 (thirteen years ago)

yup xp

I would only do this on a spare iphone 5 btw. doing this on an older model, especially if it's yr only phone, is kinda risky if something goes wrong. if you brick it and bring it to the apple store they may not be too understanding.

update your iphone and itunes to the latest versions.

download the dmg for the current version of iOS 6 for your phone (you'll need this to revert your phone back once apple revokes the cert for iOS 7 beta)

download the iOS 7 dmg file for your iphone model.

(you're gonna have to dl these from file sharing sites, not apple)

unzip the iOS 7 dmg to get the ipsw file

connect your iphone to itunes, do a full backup. if you're savvy enough, make a copy of the backup file, since itunes only stores the latest backup.

option or shift click on "update" in itunes (NOT "restore"), select the iOS 7 ipsw. it'll ask if you want upgrade and say something about registering with apple, just say OK, it doesn't mean anything.

iOS 7 will install, should keep all your existing apps, settings, and data (it did for me).

you're going to have to keep your ear to the ground about apple revoking certs, if they revoke the beta 1 cert and close the loophole for non-developers on beta 2, you'll need to revert to the iOS 6 ipsw using the same method. if enough time has gone by and the iOS 6 ipsw cert has been revoked, you could get stuck w/ an inoperable phone unless you jailbreak.

Re: Ghosting, I had an LG which did this, but after a few months I noticed a load of dead/stuck pixels on my screen, so got it repaired, and to give thme credit it was replaced the next day wih the Samsung, but after a while that one got the same dead/stuck pixel problem, on my 3rd one now which also has slowly got the same issue. I only know two other people with the same model and they both have the same problem. I think AppleCare is going to be a very wise upgrade to get. The resolution is gorgeous though.
