oh you mean the current Mac Pro.

Operation Gypsy Dildo (silby), Tuesday, 11 June 2013 00:40 (thirteen years ago)

they mentioned that the new Mac Pro will drive 4k screens, but Apple don't sell 4k screens, wonder if we can expect those at the time they launch the Pro.

Operation Gypsy Dildo (silby), Tuesday, 11 June 2013 00:41 (thirteen years ago)

apple released a new massive mavericks wallpaper for such screens iirc

ios 7.0 jelly bean

the Quim of Bendigo (Autumn Almanac), Tuesday, 11 June 2013 03:47 (thirteen years ago)

The new features and textures in iOS7 are all nice, but will Apple ever get around to doing something about these two annoying throwbacks:

1: The keyboard. There's only three rows of keys. That made sense on the original iPhone with its 3-1/2" screen, leaving over half the screen available for context. But it's much less necessary to lack a dedicated numbers or symbols row with the iPhone 5's taller 4" screen, and it makes no sense at all on the roomy iPad. Apple, can we please have an option for four- or five-row keyboards? Having to frequently toggle to a second keyboard for numbers, and a third keyboard for symbols, is getting old fast.

2. iOS has a privacy problem. Some of us work in environments where we don't want anyone who can access my phone to be able to read all of my recent emails, which the Apple mail client allows. An option to enter a password before using the mail app is essential for business use. Likewise, notifications arrive with the name, contact info, and first line of incoming messages, which I don't always want anyone seeing. And the contacts list should allow for protected names and numbers too.

The only privacy option of note is the optional 4-digit access code for using anything on the phone, but most of the iPhone/iPad features I don't want password protection on (and 4 digits is insufficient security for those that do need encryption) - I'm fine with anyone using the camera, listening to music, watching videos, getting news, stocks, and scores, playing games. I just want my work email, some notifications, and some personal documents protected from prying eyes.

why is anyone you don't trust using your phone??

settings > notifications >messages > show preview (slide to off)

That turns off the preview line of text. Very important for me as a DVR'ing sports fan who has friends that text during games that I havent watched yet.

Spottie_Ottie_Dope, Tuesday, 11 June 2013 05:31 (thirteen years ago)

thx, I had that set to on.

s1ocki, like nearly everyone else, I sometimes have my phone on the table or a charging stand when others are nearby, and may not want saucy texts from my friends appearing unexpectedly when in a business setting (but do the rest of the time).

and in his absence, she (Lee626), Tuesday, 11 June 2013 06:57 (thirteen years ago)

obv a full user model would be ott, but i do think there is a case for a kind of phone equivalent of OS X guest mode, i.e. activate it, hand your friend your phone, and they get basically a new iphone, all other data is invisible and all the data they create is wiped when they hand it back.

caek, Tuesday, 11 June 2013 09:23 (thirteen years ago)

this may be too intricate for the ultrasimple iphone UI though. could imagine it being easy from a UI POV with fingerprint technology tho.

caek, Tuesday, 11 June 2013 09:24 (thirteen years ago)

slocki, the problem is not with ppl using your phone, which is perhaps an edge case like sharing underwear, but with people sharing ipads.

caek, Tuesday, 11 June 2013 09:26 (thirteen years ago)

anyone else install the 7 beta on their phone and wanna swap notes? Or is there a different thread for that?

put a passcode on, and set it to not show texts/messages on the lock screen when they come in (you can have it just say "imessage" or "text message")

we're up all night to get (s1ocki), Tuesday, 11 June 2013 13:45 (thirteen years ago)

The problem with turning on the passcode is it's in play for almost everything, including non-sensitive stuff like my music collection, checking the weather, or reading the news. It slows me down to have to dial the passcode every time I haven't used the phone or iPad for a few minutes, just because I want to secure my email and a few contacts.

and in his absence, she (Lee626), Tuesday, 11 June 2013 14:48 (thirteen years ago)

you can make it so it only goes into effect after 5, 15, etc minutes

we're up all night to get (s1ocki), Tuesday, 11 June 2013 18:33 (thirteen years ago)

it's 1-5 minutes or never

they are either militarists (ugh) or kangaroos (?) (DJP), Tuesday, 11 June 2013 18:46 (thirteen years ago)

there is a nifty little jailbreak tweak that turns off passcode when you are on a designated wifi network, e.i. at home, at work. Passcode turns on when your phone is out of range. Would be nice is Apple stole this idea.

sofatruck, Tuesday, 11 June 2013 19:08 (thirteen years ago)

that's cool... when can i come over

乒乓, Tuesday, 11 June 2013 19:22 (thirteen years ago)

Autumn Almanac, Tuesday, 11 June 2013 21:07 (thirteen years ago)

Yeah got a few dudes here at work that aren't into it (they've had it for like an hour) but all the complaints are like hmmmmmm it's different and colorful and cheesy

Spottie_Ottie_Dope, Tuesday, 11 June 2013 21:50 (thirteen years ago)

i hope the the thin letter stems look better on the phone itself

Nhex, Tuesday, 11 June 2013 22:09 (thirteen years ago)

Will look like ass on a non-Retina device probably.
