The rise and rise of Daenerys has been a bit too much of a walkover for me. I loved the unsullied liberation episode but it's been a piece of piss since then. It was obvious from the first scene her would-be assassin had the hots and would shit out, she hasn't been in any real peril and everything was easily won. Too much Triumphalist yaying going on for my liking. I get the feeling this was her League One promotion season and things will get more interesting next season. Grey Worm is awesome.

I love the burgeoning, improbable friendship between Sandor/Arya, it hasn't come easy and is genuinely touching. Also there isn't any of that risible dodgy Leon type shit or soppy shit to ruin it.

I like all the boring one-on-ones, but yeah, could totally have done without more Theon torture, and Dany's storyline bores me to tears.

I guess Jon Snow is going to live, huh? Boo! I am tired of looking at his simpering little sad muppet face.

The jumping around can get frustrating. I wish they would do a Very Special episode with nuttin but Lannisters.

totally

I really liked the Hound/Sansa storyline in what I read of the books, I was kinda bummed they didn't do more with that in the show. Interested to see where the Hound/Arya story goes, lil baby badass in training

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 10 June 2013 21:43 (thirteen years ago)

It was so great when she went ham on that dude. It was kind of awkward that the Hound didn't notice what she was doing, but then again maybe he did & he was just letting her do it and then pretending to be all tsk tsk.

emilys., Monday, 10 June 2013 22:01 (thirteen years ago)

I really enjoyed this one, felt like it was setting everything up really well for next year.

Presumably the Night's Watch are basically bros with everyone and the Lannisters will get a raven as well? Here's betting they ignore it.

Any scene with Tywin and Tyrion and Joffrey altogether is de facto the best in the episode. Also, Davos is a dude.

Matt DC, Monday, 10 June 2013 22:03 (thirteen years ago)

the "she's going to be such a badass" line has been getting a lot of play, and obv she was born with a natural inclination toward running with scissors, but i find it hard to celebrate her education.

given what she's seen (headless father sorta, countless tortures and cruelties, headless brother sorta) and what she's been through (flight, capture, imprisonment, threat of torture, threat of rape, forced servitude, flight, capture, abandonment by substitute family, flight capture, etc) what she's turning out to be is less a badass than a hollow bullet of rage and pain just looking for a direction to be fired in. hound could teach her a lot about picking your damn battles and thinking for god's sake at least one step ahead.

she'll certainly kill again, and from my seat in the audience i hope she'll achieve some spectacular vengeance before it's all over. but if she lives to 17 she is def going to date a lot of bad boys before she sorts herself out. if she's not already too far gone for sorting.

resulting post (rogermexico.), Monday, 10 June 2013 22:10 (thirteen years ago)

"hollow bullet of rage" is how i would interpret that character too but who knows what demon's lurk in the GRRM mind

ygrette shooting john snow full of arrows was so good and lol

I was mentally yelling at her, "IN HIS PRETTY FACE DAMMIT, IT'LL STICK THAT WAY."

i find it hard to celebrate her education.

I was actually bored by the stabby, it was a lot more invigorating in the books. Also, as this is fiction, I'm less inclined to be moralistic here.

oh god Rob's body/head thing might have been more traumatising than the damn red wedding.

OTM, but IMO this was a LOT more disturbing in the book, at least how I pictured it.

am i taking a tone? fwiw i certainly don't see this as a question of right or wrong, just its sad bc if things had been different she might have been a girl.

I'm trying to avoid getting too much farther into the books, but there's a thread in teh fandoms about how Arya's storyline isn't COOL BUTTKICKING GIRL GETTING HER BUTTKICKING ON, no, she's the child soldier whose psyche has been horribly distorted by the violence she inhabits, that your aside references, but I want to revel in the former without complications! And my out is that it's a story, and I can happily wallow in my shallowness.

Ou sont les Sonneywolferines d'antan? (Leee), Tuesday, 11 June 2013 05:38 (thirteen years ago)

I would say Arya's arc is going to be a tragedy but if the alternative is her following Sansa's route then idk. Westeros just seems a shitter for all involved.

Gukbe, Tuesday, 11 June 2013 05:47 (thirteen years ago)

Eh don't mind me, I'm just airing some percolating stuff to avoid finishing a review for something else right now.

roose bolton is gleefully evil, i loved his little scene w/walder. barely concealed contempt, humoring the old psycho, pretty pleased with himself overall.

glad the direwolf head/stark body thing was in the show.

never mind jon snow, her hair was too orangey for crows

r|t|c, Tuesday, 11 June 2013 14:17 (thirteen years ago)

this was a satisfactory closer/prelude but i did miss a bit of littlefinger craftiness somewhat

as epically cringe as the daenerys scene was this show knows damn well they can get away with anything if it ends with a dragon flying @ u face screeching

r|t|c, Tuesday, 11 June 2013 14:21 (thirteen years ago)

In that case I am glad they didn't try to get away with a whole penis chopping off scene because that technique would have made the experience even more horrifying and also confusing.

Evan, Tuesday, 11 June 2013 14:53 (thirteen years ago)

Got to have the dungeons, if you want the dragons. GRRM, he doesn't make the rules.

Andrew Farrell, Tuesday, 11 June 2013 15:09 (thirteen years ago)

The rise and rise of Daenerys has been a bit too much of a walkover for me

Weird how no one has bothered to even be particular suspicious of that grey haired dude who just turned up and started hanging out with them and has so far played no discernable plot function.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 11 June 2013 15:12 (thirteen years ago)

Barristan Selmy? That's probably got something to do with his being pitched as a legendary ideal of nobility and heroism unfairly cast aside by King Cnut.

Windsor Davies, Tuesday, 11 June 2013 15:53 (thirteen years ago)

There was a fear from Jorah that he knew that he was spying on Dany for a time.

Gukbe, Tuesday, 11 June 2013 16:00 (thirteen years ago)

He's so dumpy I still have trouble buying that he is some legendary warrior. Blackfish is much more believable as a badass old guy warrior.

Evan, Tuesday, 11 June 2013 16:04 (thirteen years ago)

i was hoping for Jonah Lehrer but this is arguably even better

Ok, serious brain fart cos I thought you were referring to Roose Bolton.

how Sibel Kekilli and Oona Chaplin are not #1 and #2 respectively I do not understand

akm, Wednesday, 12 June 2013 04:30 (thirteen years ago)

I'm bummed out I clicked on that and gave them a page impression

Walter Galt, Wednesday, 12 June 2013 06:56 (thirteen years ago)

There was too many boring little 1 on 1s in a row

boring little 1 on 1s are also a finale tradition and they're always my favorite, esp when they're reflecting/navel-gazey/not directly talking about the big storylines/sort of how real people talk

ty based gay dead computer god (zachlyon), Wednesday, 12 June 2013 07:30 (thirteen years ago)

and god, the robb/head scene is a million times worse when i remember he's only like 14 in the books. the red wedding too, but especially that, barf

ty based gay dead computer god (zachlyon), Wednesday, 12 June 2013 07:30 (thirteen years ago)

there was that point in the red wedding where he's standing in the middle and just looking at walder frey and basically going "UH. UH." like tina from bob's burgers with that look in his eyes and i couldn't stop thinking FOURTEEN YEARS OOOOOLD

ty based gay dead computer god (zachlyon), Wednesday, 12 June 2013 07:32 (thirteen years ago)

No worries, he's like 15 or 16

― ty based gay dead computer god (zachlyon), Wednesday, June 12, 2013 3:30 AM (6 hours ago)

Yeah but with them all one after another it deflated the (potential) momentum I'd been hoping for in the finale. Though I'm aware we all needed a rest after the red wedding arguably... except I was looking for a little more resulting chaos.

Evan, Wednesday, 12 June 2013 13:43 (thirteen years ago)

tbh i'm cool with the second to last episode containing the climax and the last episode acting as an actual come-down conclusion, everyone's just used to the jj abrams "finale has to be super exciting and end on a major cliffhanger" method
