my current theory is

- retina devices only will get a new helvetica neue light derivative
- gruber will absolutely bloody cream himself
- pre-retina devices won't get the full new look, encouraging people with chicken wire ipads and macs to upgrade

I'm really looking forward to a new look. windows 8 is making Mac OS and iOS look severely dated.

purchases tab in the ipad app store FINALLY has alphabet navigation

the Quim of Bendigo (Autumn Almanac), Saturday, 8 June 2013 22:00 (thirteen years ago)

also it didn't take 12 years to load this time

I'm about to have a baby so I'm thinking of getting a desktop CPU for the first time in 10 years to do some teleworking. Is this a good time to get an iMac (I already have a MBP and two iPads)? Also is there a way to sync the HDs of the MBP and the iMac when on the same wifi network?

What kind of work do you do? Personally I would recommend getting an external monitor and just plugging in your laptop.

Chewshabadoo, Sunday, 9 June 2013 09:40 (thirteen years ago)

Regular office job. My main concern is ergonomics as I can't really work very long or very hard on a laptop

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Sunday, 9 June 2013 09:49 (thirteen years ago)

external monitor and keyboard then. completely syncing two computers is not really an option, and syncing home directories is still really a power user thing (to an extent it shouldn't be).

caek, Sunday, 9 June 2013 09:55 (thirteen years ago)

Yep, that. If you can afford the comparatively pricier Apple monitors, and your Macbook Pro has a Thunderbolt port, you can leave your keyboard/mouse (if not Bluetooth), and other things like external harddrive, printer, etc. plugged into the monitor and only need to plug in the power lead and Thunderbolt cable when at your desk.

Chewshabadoo, Sunday, 9 June 2013 11:54 (thirteen years ago)

Another option is to get or make a stand to hold your laptop higher up. I have my setup like this using a basic monitor connected using a mini-displayport to DVI adapter, so I have a two monitor setup of sorts, but some people just use the laptop monitor screen. (sorry about the mess!)

Where will we be
In an Apple Spaceship somewhere
F5ing across an empty screen

Operation Gypsy Dildo (silby), Sunday, 9 June 2013 17:08 (thirteen years ago)

Dropbox will sync folders very well, but literally syncing your whole Harddrive is quite a bit harder, if things like apps and settings need to be included.

thanks for advice guys. I had been thinking of docking my MBP but I dont know whether that setup would be wife friendly enough. On the sync'ing - yeah I guess we ain't there yet, although in a an iOS world it seems increasingly weird to be dealing with different content on computers in the same house. I would like to have the same iTunes and iPhoto libraries on all my workstations.

I think this might be quite a big one today. Apple's been quiet for too long for this just to be three hours of game demos

stet, Monday, 10 June 2013 16:34 (thirteen years ago)

eris bueller (lukas), Monday, 10 June 2013 17:23 (thirteen years ago)

really curious how tagging works. resource fork?

eris bueller (lukas), Monday, 10 June 2013 17:24 (thirteen years ago)

What's wrong with labels?

If he doesn't get why everyone's cheering for multiple displays, he can't use a second screen.

Guess that's killed TotalFinder then (which has had tabs in Finder for years - works really well).

toby, Monday, 10 June 2013 17:27 (thirteen years ago)

is the live stream at http://www.apple.com/apple-events/june-2013/ working for anyone?

caek, Monday, 10 June 2013 17:31 (thirteen years ago)

Yeah, was troublesome at first but full-speed now. You need to use Safari, btw

stet, Monday, 10 June 2013 17:34 (thirteen years ago)

Keychain sounds interesting, if it will work with iOS as well. And if it's actually as good as Lastpass.

toby, Monday, 10 June 2013 17:42 (thirteen years ago)

guessing from 40+ min on OS X that nothing big is coming

Euler, Monday, 10 June 2013 17:42 (thirteen years ago)

Flat calendar will do me.

stet, Monday, 10 June 2013 17:43 (thirteen years ago)

sleepingbag, Monday, 10 June 2013 17:46 (thirteen years ago)

I guessed it was to show the dual-display stuff, but maybe not.

stet, Monday, 10 June 2013 17:47 (thirteen years ago)
