The problem is, I don't think any of the possible interpretations of the final scene are very good. Then it doesn't matter how many there are.

I am glad he got whacked off-camera, despite all the violent deaths in the show I couldn't handle seeing Tony's shell opened up.

yeah that interpretation seems so plainly correct that i feel dumb for not seeing it the first time through.

tony getting whacked due to carelessness and hubris (as opposed to being eternally plagued by paranoia) makes sense given his character, as it's consistently established throughout the show that he keeps surviving/staying out of prison largely out of pure luck, luck that is bound to run out and that kept dwindling as the show went on.

the fact that the cut black lasts however long it does before the credits begin—meaning the blackness is PART of the episode, not the end of it—basically says it all

love the patsy parisi theory, and the idea of the mikey palmice "3 o'clock" warning from beyond the grave is grade A.

Definitely makes a sound case. I need to work my way through all the episodes again though, whenever that happens, to see how I feel the second time.

I read that before I saw the last season, so I was fully expecting it to be the truth, but I don't think it holds up. If we're just supposed to think that he dies, then the rest of the episode does an awful job of making that seem like a good ending. It's such a mess, really.

I've said this just recently, but by itself, the final scene is a brilliant piece of filmmaking. It doesn't fit with the rest of the episode.

Haven't watched it since it aired, but I remember being halfway through the last episode and wondering why they were spending time introducing us to AJ's new girlfriend.

It is a great ending in the manner in which it spares you all the standard bathos of the death scene and the aftermath, don't need to see Tony going into the light or having flashbacks before he kicks the bucket. Seen it before in countless movies and it would detract from everything about Tony which makes the series good. Don't want want to see him defeated and gurgling blood on the deck, he has been whacked and The Sopranos is finished.

another piece of evidence for the tony is dead theory (which is true), is that david chase has always said he'd never do a sopranos sequel, but that he might be open to a prequel. PRETTY BIG HINT THERE>

I think there is a lot to be said for Gilligan's approach as a show-runner as opposed to Chase's rampant egotism and it isn't like he has done anything worthwhile since The Sopranos. That 60's movie was such rinse.

considering it explores some of the same themes, it's written by one of the sopranos guys, and chase had a great deal w/ getting it on the air i'd say it belongs in the same conversation

Awful is way harsh, the Chase and Weiner chapters are quite illuminating, the Burns/Simon chapters are dull and worthy, kind of like watching Treme.

rewatched the pilot this morning on Season 1 library discs. Now, um, the next 12 eps before it's due Saturday.
