that one made me want to check out Hendrie's stuff, something that doesn't happen often with other guests

though i guess if I based my consumption off of wtf episodes I'd be watching Frances Ha and the fake season of Community and listening to John Fogerty jam with My Morning Jacket

the tv show was getting tolerable until this danny trejo ep

no clue who kevin christy is but that 1 was my fav recent ep of the podcast

the Marshall Crenshaw/ Thomas Dolby episode was a little cringe inducing as Maron has this obsession with success--really kind of ruined the Tommy Stinson interview for me too--and he knew almost nothing about either guest. But Dolby was awesome. I loved when he talked about Prefab Sprout as a British Steely Dan and you could feel Maron working hard to restrain himself from being a dick about it.

Ooh I wasn't going to listen, but now that Prefab Sprout is on the table, I'm there. Maron and Scharpling's Dan-o-phobia is a serious character failing!

ah, I didn't know Scharpling was also a Dan-o-phobe. I knew there was something off about that man.

that last episode of the tv show was fucking awful....i'm sorry, until further notice, this show sucks

The Iggy episode was pretty good.

when he was teasing last week that he had a guest he'd been trying to get forever I thought it would be Seinfeld or something but of course it was a musician.

im still waiting on the sedaris episode.

I figure there have to be several levels of urgency that determine when these interviews get dropped

1. There are the people doing publicity for a time sensitive property whose publicists ask for a specific time for the interview to go up
2. There are the "get" interviews with people Maron is excited about. These go the front of the queue so that Hardwick doesn't get them first
3. All the other people who can get slotted in whenever

Made it five minutes into the Rogen/Goldberg one before I couldn't take Rogen's laugh any longer.

Iggy Pop ep is good, I'd love to hear WTF w/ Henry Rollins.

Yeah, the Rollins one was a couple years back, but it was pretty enjoyable iirc.

The Kristen Schaal one was pretty light and fluffy, but it came to light that she was a ska kid at one point in time and it rubbed some of her shine off.

I couldn't take Rogen's laugh any longer.

about a decade back I was in a band with a guy who laughed just like rogen. I quit that band.

MM: He’s not easy. He’s difficult.

When I had John Cale on, that was fuckin’ impossible, dude! The guy’s been around for 40 years or longer. I’m not that familiar with his solo stuff. I don’t have Paris 1919. I took the interview because I could, and because I wanted to talk about the fuckin’ Velvet Underground and producing The Stooges.

So I’m listening to all this stuff, trying to cram it in. I talked to him for like an hour and 15 minutes, and was very forthcoming about The Velvet Underground, about production, about noise music. Then he asks, “Are we going to talk about the new album?” And I’m like, “No, I didn’t get it, dude. They didn’t sent it to me. I haven’t heard it.” I just had to be honest. And he looked at me like, You’ve got to be fucking kidding me. I didn’t know what to do. So I seized that moment and asked him, “Well, what did you do differently this record?” It was the right question to ask. It was better because I was honest. He had to explain something to me about his process. So it worked out.

Seems like Maron says "No one sent me a copy" all the time. Are publicists really that shitty or is that Maron's "a dog ate my homework"?

Unless the interview was pre-release that's no excuse. Spend 30 seconds to find a legal stream on the net. Do the fucking work or you deserve to get called on it.

This is a problem now if he's interviewing people who are on any kind of publicity tour and are just there to plug something.

I'm not sure I really care if he's done the research - the unpreparedness is kind of his thing, no?

It works fine when he has a guest who's up for talking about whatever or who can go for an hour with one question, or people he already knows. But as he branches into interviews with musicians who aren't that familiar with his steez it could become a thing. It didn't with, say, Huey Lewis because he was just a talker. Kerry Kinney called him out pretty hard in her interview for not knowing that she was in a rock band for years.

It's kind of a drag that he's getting more and more people who're there specifically to plug something.

i really liked the danny lobell one recently. i'd never heard of him but it was nice to have someone on who's still struggling and figuring things out, and a little bit frustrated by it. also fun to hear him (as someone who also had a comedy interview project) analyzing previous wtf interviews.

Listening to Cheech & Chong right now. I love that half the stories are about Bobby Taylor.

i've kinda skirted a lot of the musical/celeb ones cause of the negativity here but the couple music interviews i heard where he knows his stuff - cf the iggy pop one, which he's great on, ie just familiar enough w/stuff like we will fall & their detroit antecedents, &c - are really satisfying. iggy interview is so dope.

Marc does a great job of getting out of Cheech & Chong's way. Nice change from his dominant style.
