I am in no way suggesting that summoning Cthulhu to rise out of San Francisco Bay and massacre all of Silicon Valley would be a good thing, but I wouldn't do anything to stop it either.

We have a different name because we make a different sandwich. A true Philly hoagie is so much better than a “sub”, it’s not even funny. We’re famous for the cheesesteak, but the Philly hoagie is just as great. (Sarcone’s is the best; Primo’s are excellent too.)
i hate this guy.

have we mentioned that he calls himself the "director" of the app?

So basically Grubes acted like a demanding, irascible client with very specific requirements about the design. Wonder if he paid them their hourly rate during development or if everyone was just in it for equity.
― Operation Gypsy Dildo (silby), Sunday, 9 June 2013 17:56 (thirteen years ago)
taking six months to dev this thing absolutely suggests that an asshole director demanding meaningless iterations. Clients like Gruber are fucking horrible.

The original iPhone was designed for a world where smartphones were horrid little button- and scroll-wheel-driven devices, and where proper humane computer interfaces were driven by mouse and trackpad cursors. The iPhone blended the two — the size and cellular networking of the smartphone, the humaneness of Mac-style UI design — and did so by introducing something new. The touchscreen. The design of the iPhone software was entirely informed by the fact that this was a new experience, it was nothing like using an existing smartphone, nor anything like using a Mac or Windows PC. It needed training wheels, to get people up to speed. Thus, to name one small example, why iOS buttons have tended to look so very button-y. To inform the user, as clearly as possible, that this is a button that can be tapped.

is he capable of writing anything without sounding like a total choad? "humaneness," christ

tbf "humane" is a term of art in industrial/interface design and typography
― caek, Monday, 10 June 2013 16:25 (thirteen years ago)
i'm aware of that, but it doesn't make it sound any less ridiculous
― scream blahula scream (govern yourself accordingly), Monday, 10 June 2013 16:43 (thirteen years ago)
not to come off sounding glib - as somebody who does ux for a living i guess i just reserve a lot of ire for people who overuse "humane" and "empathetic" etc

also the episode has a bunch of random people on it like merlin mann, scott simpson, his wife, blah blah
I actually tried to listen to to it yesterday. I got to the 'comedian' and had to shut it off. Surprised I made it that far.

he sure does admire expensive stuff for being expensive
― caek, Tuesday, 9 July 2013 21:06 (twelve years ago)
i feel like there's this submeme of 'don't price your products too cheaply' going around among entrepreneuer types
― 乒乓, Tuesday, 9 July 2013 23:52 (twelve years ago)
i absolutely get that line of thinking, at least from the point of view developer.
but gruber is not a dev. he's a consumer/critic and he seems to be actively critical of inexpensive stuff simply because it's inexpensive.
i suppose that's fine when you are a cryptoconservative pulling in six figures.
― caek, Tuesday, 9 July 2013 23:57 (twelve years ago)
dude he wants to pimp the meme of "it's okay to set your prices high" because he IS in the fucking development game. He doesn't want to lose money. And BTW his fucking app is overpriced and wouldn't make a dent in the world if it wasn't him pimping it. It's a classic solution looking for a problem, window dressing looking for a fucking window.
I don't find him conservative at all, at least judging from his overtly political posts.
"maximal apps" are nothing more than vanity projects or, as the fucking moron David Morin says, "bespoke" apps where devs jerk off into code, self-promote it as "disruptive", and then bask in the glory of the five other devs who want to pay $5.99 for five seconds of geek validation.
I would love to see a list of Gruber's paid consulting gigs related to typography.
