JJ - what's the scoop on the fireside lounge? I had to go to a visitation in the area, and noticed that, the fact they advertised cocktails & homemade gravies was intriguiging

well they have a terrific website, i can tell you that much

fireside used to be a totally terrifying locals only place, but some dude from duluth (?) bought it several years ago and has thrown a bunch of work into it. pretty badass bloody marys, id say the last time i went there for breakfast like half the people there had little kids with them. hilariously bad decor, feels kind of like a restaurant you would find in cabinland wisconsin. they had a bit of a problem last year when some drunk dude killed another drunk dude by driving away with him hanging out of the car door and then running over him iirc.

xpost i had the eggs benedict last time i was there (i am not a frequent customer, but we wanted to give it a shot) and it was pretty sweet for $6. nothing to write home about but shit man $6

haha! I grew up in Little Canada, and hadn't driven through the Rice/Larpenteur area for years until recently. It's a weird mixture of places that appear unchanged, like The Limplifter, and things that are clearly on the downhill slide. That A-frame bar across from Lake McCarron's, the Chalet, is now Freddy's Tiki Hut!

Bali Hai, 36 and White Bear Ave.? It was the AWESOMEST!! The owner's whole family did a floor show! I've actually been to Freddy's, a buddy of mine hosts a blues jam on Sunday nights. Crapbox bar, and only barely Tiki, as you might expect.

YES! it was the bali hai! that place was completely awesome and insane, ive always had a pretty meh reaction to suzis as a result, i have already seen the best.

man we used to get tore up at that place, the volcano in particular with the everclear in the middle was great for ruining an evening

Okay, total thread derail, but it's cold and rainy and I'm at work wishing I was in a Tiki bar. Specifcally the late, lamented Kahiki in Columbus, Ohio, which was pretty much the best place ever.

its killing me that there are no photos out there of the bali hai, its really hard to describe without sounding like a crazy person making shit up. you had to cross an arched wooden bridge to get into the lounge! there were koi everywhere noshing on food people would throw at them! i am not making this up!

Have to admit I did a bit of research to see if the bar at the Thunderbird was still the pastiche NA corollary of tiki bars, but IT HAS BEEN SMALLPOXED BY RAMADA. And I'm totally gutted I never got to go to Camelot, the crazy castle in Edina with a moat.
