What other meteorologically depressing locales can we emulate this year?
― Not Simone Choule (Eric H.), Wednesday, 5 June 2013 13:36 (thirteen years ago)
i expect we will make a run at "surface of the sun" in august
― O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Wednesday, 5 June 2013 15:46 (thirteen years ago)
we already did that in MA, it was pretty cool
...wait

― j., Thursday, 6 June 2013 00:09 (thirteen years ago)
they're unusable for most of the year tho
― eris bueller (lukas), Thursday, 6 June 2013 00:23 (thirteen years ago)
you're unusable for most of the year
― j., Thursday, 6 June 2013 00:51 (thirteen years ago)
As a dude that has gotten drunk and worse behind the frozen waterfall many times, you are incorrect
― O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Thursday, 6 June 2013 02:53 (thirteen years ago)
JJ - what's the scoop on the fireside lounge? I had to go to a visitation in the area, and noticed that, the fact they advertised cocktails & homemade gravies was intriguiging
― unfinest DN (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 6 June 2013 12:26 (thirteen years ago)
well they have a terrific website, i can tell you that much
― goole, Thursday, 6 June 2013 14:52 (thirteen years ago)
fireside used to be a totally terrifying locals only place, but some dude from duluth (?) bought it several years ago and has thrown a bunch of work into it. pretty badass bloody marys, id say the last time i went there for breakfast like half the people there had little kids with them. hilariously bad decor, feels kind of like a restaurant you would find in cabinland wisconsin. they had a bit of a problem last year when some drunk dude killed another drunk dude by driving away with him hanging out of the car door and then running over him iirc.
― O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Thursday, 6 June 2013 15:34 (thirteen years ago)
otoh, $6 eggs benedict!
― Not Simone Choule (Eric H.), Thursday, 6 June 2013 15:35 (thirteen years ago)
hahahaha the website has the cheers song as an embed, awesome
i will say, the new restaurant/bar in stpl that is the fucking business is that Ward 6 place over in East St. Paul on Payne.
xpost i had the eggs benedict last time i was there (i am not a frequent customer, but we wanted to give it a shot) and it was pretty sweet for $6. nothing to write home about but shit man $6
― O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Thursday, 6 June 2013 15:38 (thirteen years ago)
for some reason when you said Fireside Lounge I thought it was the Lamplighter Lounge at Larpenteur and Rice Street. THAT place will never be redeemed.
― 2 huxtables and a sousaphone (Jon Lewis), Thursday, 6 June 2013 15:59 (thirteen years ago)
hahaha oh god no
― O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Thursday, 6 June 2013 16:19 (thirteen years ago)
lol that would really make this sentence something:
id say the last time i went there for breakfast like half the people there had little kids with them.
― unfinest DN (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 6 June 2013 18:02 (thirteen years ago)
haha! I grew up in Little Canada, and hadn't driven through the Rice/Larpenteur area for years until recently. It's a weird mixture of places that appear unchanged, like The Limplifter, and things that are clearly on the downhill slide. That A-frame bar across from Lake McCarron's, the Chalet, is now Freddy's Tiki Hut!
― New Authentic Everybootsy Collins (Dan Peterson), Thursday, 6 June 2013 18:08 (thirteen years ago)
god i know that freddys tiki hut will be just awful but i feel so compelled to just lock the shop up and drive there right now
oh hey also as long as you are here dan, did you get my email about the amp?
― O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Thursday, 6 June 2013 18:18 (thirteen years ago)
LOL, we just featured Freddy's Tiki Hut in our listicle of the day: http://minnesota.cbslocal.com/top-lists/best-tiki-bars-in-minnesota/
(I didn't write or research it.)
― Not Simone Choule (Eric H.), Thursday, 6 June 2013 18:19 (thirteen years ago)
the best tiki bar in minnesota is that weird ass one that was in the middle of nowhere in north saint paul or woodbury or whatever that had the downstairs with all the water features but maybe burned down or something
― O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Thursday, 6 June 2013 18:21 (thirteen years ago)
haha omg they listed that thing in the mall of america
― O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Thursday, 6 June 2013 18:22 (thirteen years ago)
Hence my quick disclaimer. :/
― Not Simone Choule (Eric H.), Thursday, 6 June 2013 18:24 (thirteen years ago)
lol that's awesome
― goole, Thursday, 6 June 2013 18:29 (thirteen years ago)
cb5 loc4l presents "all 4 nominally tiki bars in the state of minnesota"
― O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Thursday, 6 June 2013 18:32 (thirteen years ago)
1. a place with tiki in the name2. the mall3. an actual tiki bar4. a place that has wicker furniture
― goole, Thursday, 6 June 2013 18:32 (thirteen years ago)
Supposedly the a-frame tiki bar has decent karaoke?
― 2 huxtables and a sousaphone (Jon Lewis), Thursday, 6 June 2013 18:45 (thirteen years ago)
or did a couple of years ago
the best tiki bar in minnesota is that weird ass one that was in the middle of nowhere in north saint paul
Bali Hai, 36 and White Bear Ave.? It was the AWESOMEST!! The owner's whole family did a floor show! I've actually been to Freddy's, a buddy of mine hosts a blues jam on Sunday nights. Crapbox bar, and only barely Tiki, as you might expect.
John, yeah, got your email thanks! I'll pull my amp out of storage soon and give you details. I know it's not worth remotely what this guy's trying to get for his:

Hahahaha Dan, my dad used to manage a horrible sports bar in Little Canada.

horrible sports bar in Little Canada.
a redundancy iirc
― 2 huxtables and a sousaphone (Jon Lewis), Thursday, 6 June 2013 18:49 (thirteen years ago)
Suzy, which bar? There weren't/aren't that many.
― New Authentic Everybootsy Collins (Dan Peterson), Thursday, 6 June 2013 18:50 (thirteen years ago)
Just looked it up on Yelp for the LOLs however am not divulging its name because SHAME. Basically think of the worst bar, you'll probably be right.
― on the sidelines dishing out sass (suzy), Thursday, 6 June 2013 18:54 (thirteen years ago)
If it's the one I'm thinking of, been there for ages (still there I believe) then yeah!
― New Authentic Everybootsy Collins (Dan Peterson), Thursday, 6 June 2013 18:55 (thirteen years ago)
Yep, it's still there. My dad quit when they had a hepatitis outbreak or when he had a stroke - hard to remember which was the trigger.
Oh! The trigger was he hosed his/my inheritance to open up a blues bar by the marina in Inver fucking Grove Heights, which failed. The utter dumbshit.
― on the sidelines dishing out sass (suzy), Thursday, 6 June 2013 19:00 (thirteen years ago)
YES! it was the bali hai! that place was completely awesome and insane, ive always had a pretty meh reaction to suzis as a result, i have already seen the best.
man we used to get tore up at that place, the volcano in particular with the everclear in the middle was great for ruining an evening
― O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Thursday, 6 June 2013 20:10 (thirteen years ago)

dragon has gotten sadly uncheap over the years, but hey, two wonderous punches and you are lucky if you get home still wearing your own clothes
― O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Thursday, 6 June 2013 20:22 (thirteen years ago)
Okay, total thread derail, but it's cold and rainy and I'm at work wishing I was in a Tiki bar. Specifcally the late, lamented Kahiki in Columbus, Ohio, which was pretty much the best place ever.

― New Authentic Everybootsy Collins (Dan Peterson), Thursday, 6 June 2013 20:26 (thirteen years ago)
that does not look like a place that would be in columbus ohio
― O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Thursday, 6 June 2013 20:27 (thirteen years ago)
its killing me that there are no photos out there of the bali hai, its really hard to describe without sounding like a crazy person making shit up. you had to cross an arched wooden bridge to get into the lounge! there were koi everywhere noshing on food people would throw at them! i am not making this up!
― O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Thursday, 6 June 2013 20:28 (thirteen years ago)
To journey through the rancid taste of Wondrous Punch melting away is to have tangible sensory proof of your increasing drunkenness.
― Not Simone Choule (Eric H.), Thursday, 6 June 2013 20:32 (thirteen years ago)
the secret to the red dragon is the almond delight
― O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Thursday, 6 June 2013 20:32 (thirteen years ago)
I'm pretty sure I committed the number one taxi-home sin after 2x Dragon buckets, or was that after the comp ICBs at Triple Rock?
Have to admit I did a bit of research to see if the bar at the Thunderbird was still the pastiche NA corollary of tiki bars, but IT HAS BEEN SMALLPOXED BY RAMADA. And I'm totally gutted I never got to go to Camelot, the crazy castle in Edina with a moat.

No, wait: I managed not to puke in the cab but did make my driver pull over on Dean Parkway so I could chunk my guts out beside the curb.
