WTF with Marc Maron (it's a podcast)

whatever it is, I'm not feeling it.

I watched the one about the dead animal under the house and made a mental note to never watch the show again.

I liked Marc more when I'd only see him on Conan occasionally, and when he'd release a new album, and when he was just on the radio and/or in the early days of WTF. I even like WTF now. But I think the tv show was one step too far. I'm starting to feel suffocated by his neuroses and generally lifesucking presence.

i agree, he's better in an off-the-cuff medium rather than scripted

Same one I saw. Thought it was okay, but that was several weeks ago and I haven't made an effort to go back and seek out more, so I suppose that says something.

I liked the two I saw. Didn't see the dead animal one. I like the show. I like the interviews. I like some of his rambling. But I don't like his standup.

That presence is what I love about his standup and the podcast. I just don't believe it translates to the television format very well, especially in a Louie/Curb Your Enthusiasm context when reality and fiction are mixed up. I like the stories when they come from him directly, but the TV character is a dick.

Greenberg comes up in the Noah Baumbach interview and I think that's likely a big influence on the show.

Absolutely, I enjoyed the hell out of it. She's a great interview and he didn't even get a chance to summon up any bitterness or resentment. And she works with Louie C.K.!

I used to listen to Phil Hendrie a lot, but I haven't ever heard his podcast and hearing him cut loose like he is on WTF is really new to me. Love it.

Tommy Stinson interview pretty great! He seems to roll with Maron pretty well on pretty much any topic. There's nothign particularly revelatory or amazing...I think just the fact that it's Tommy kinda puts the interview over the top :)

so many lols in the GNR portion of the interview. Maron asks him how long he's been with GNR, and Tommy says, 'Since 1998'. And Maron goes, 'Wow! That long?" and he gives the most defeated 'Yeah' you've ever heard, it's priceless.

I loved when maron asked"so you guys made Chinese Democracy, and what other albums?"

like Maron's style in that interview was just hilarious. The only way it could have been better is if he had said 'So, Bob. Is still around? What's he up to these days?"

the ep of his show feat the Gersh and her kid w/a podcast was pretty funny. still not entirely sold on the show, he has a thing or two to learn about line readings.

What recent interviews are worth checking out? I enjoyed the Billy Bragg one.

Phil Hendrie and Pamela Adlon were both really good/funny.

Hendrie was great. Huey Lewis one worth a listen too (Maron gets frustrated that Lewis was hanging out with all these SF psychedelic luminaries but is still resolutely a square who loves old R&B)

Lewis interview was fascinating. Made me wonder if he's the model for Ned Flanders (beatnik parents with squaresville kid).

Didn't Huey Lewis travel around Europe busking when he left college? He doesnt really strike me a boring square, musical output aside.

yeah turns out the shit he was into is way cooler than the grateful dead etc

The Phil Hendrie one was def cool

that one made me want to check out Hendrie's stuff, something that doesn't happen often with other guests

though i guess if I based my consumption off of wtf episodes I'd be watching Frances Ha and the fake season of Community and listening to John Fogerty jam with My Morning Jacket

the tv show was getting tolerable until this danny trejo ep

no clue who kevin christy is but that 1 was my fav recent ep of the podcast

the Marshall Crenshaw/ Thomas Dolby episode was a little cringe inducing as Maron has this obsession with success--really kind of ruined the Tommy Stinson interview for me too--and he knew almost nothing about either guest. But Dolby was awesome. I loved when he talked about Prefab Sprout as a British Steely Dan and you could feel Maron working hard to restrain himself from being a dick about it.

Ooh I wasn't going to listen, but now that Prefab Sprout is on the table, I'm there. Maron and Scharpling's Dan-o-phobia is a serious character failing!

ah, I didn't know Scharpling was also a Dan-o-phobe. I knew there was something off about that man.

that last episode of the tv show was fucking awful....i'm sorry, until further notice, this show sucks

The Iggy episode was pretty good.

when he was teasing last week that he had a guest he'd been trying to get forever I thought it would be Seinfeld or something but of course it was a musician.

im still waiting on the sedaris episode.
