How can you stare at a red light if you have ping pong ball halves taped to your eyes?

I know this is a joke but ping-pong balls do allow light to penetrate, they are somewhat translucent. So if you keep your eyes open inside the ping-pong glasses while a red light is shone at you, and focus at the brightest point you can perceive, you can be said to be 'staring at' the red light.
