also possibly-but-unlikely a desperate housewives ref (?) w/r/t dr baird's sister being his mother

i thought it was a jack nicholson reference but did they do that on desperate housewives?
― Yo, I just copped dat brand new Manity Kane cd. (M@tt He1ges0n), Saturday, 14 February 2009 22:20 (seventeen years ago)
(britisher) That or it's a Kat/Zoe reference. But that seems unlikely. (/britisher)
― raaaaaaaaaah (a hoy hoy), Saturday, 14 February 2009 22:26 (seventeen years ago)
ha yeah it was a relatively short arc but the daughter of one of the housewives had a babby and her mother did the 'pretend it's hers' thing. like all things on that show, it turned out to be stupid and inconsequential, i wish i could stop watching it
xpost
― Jewish Lager (k3vin k.), Saturday, 14 February 2009 22:26 (seventeen years ago)
You're all over-thinking this, clearly it's a Sarah Palin reference, you know TINA FEY WINK WINK MAVERICK.
― Leee, Saturday, 14 February 2009 22:44 (seventeen years ago)
i loved the Generalissimo episode very much - liz drugging dr baird was a little eye roll but jack as the Generalissimo is classic for all time. i think the best throwaway line was about tracy getting serious and playing arthur ashe lolll

I think he actually said "HELLO ABC BLAH BLAH BLAH"
― akm, Sunday, 15 February 2009 17:15 (seventeen years ago)
liz drugging dr baird was a little eye roll
Yeah, but it led to a couple of the best moments of the episode: "That's not your dog!" "Just RELAX." "I am the Generalissimo!" "I don't know what that means!", so I feel like it was worth it.
Am I nuts, or does this show reward/lend itself to repeated viewings like no other show since the Simpsons in its prime?
― Sara Sara Sara, Sunday, 15 February 2009 18:12 (seventeen years ago)
You are not nuts.
I am certain I've seen every episode from the first 2 seasons at least twice, with particular scenes (Jack & Tracy's therapy scene for example) many, many more times than that.

Sometimes I wonder if the viewers out there who aren't watching 30 Rock are dismissing it because they don't get the little obscure references and nerd-bait easter eggs, because for me, aside from Liz and Jack's complex and fascinating relationship, the little pop culture nods are the best part of the show.
who is this dickweed who thinks "Liz and Jack's complex and fascinating relationship" is the best part of this show?!?!?
― the deetwocent (some dude), Sunday, 15 February 2009 19:03 (seventeen years ago)
WHAT AN ASSHOLE!!!!!
― s1ocki, Sunday, 15 February 2009 19:04 (seventeen years ago)
haha. i thought it was sweet in the first episode of this season when at the end, Liz said, "I just like seeing you back there," or something to Jack. does this make me a dickweed y/n
― horseshoe, Sunday, 15 February 2009 19:06 (seventeen years ago)
i'm not saying it's not an aspect of the show i enjoy, but if someone makes a list of favorite things about 30 Rock that looks like "1. jack and liz!!! 2. jokes" then something is wrong with them.
― z8080 smith (some dude), Sunday, 15 February 2009 19:07 (seventeen years ago)
i think it is an amazing comedy relationship they have mined brilliantly ("if you were any other woman in the world, i'd be attracted to you right now") so i dont see why it would be dickweedish to maybe really like it a lot?? even like it the best?
― s1ocki, Sunday, 15 February 2009 19:10 (seventeen years ago)
i dunno...if they said they liked jokes about j&l over other kinds of jokes, i'd be like ok, but they say relationship over jokes, which is wonky to me.
― z8080 smith (some dude), Sunday, 15 February 2009 19:14 (seventeen years ago)
relationship = jokes
you are splitting hairs into infinity dog

there really is no way for anyone to be fake internet mad around here without you getting exasperatingly rational about it, is there

― s1ocki, Sunday, 15 February 2009 19:26 (seventeen years ago)
i had a point tho, i think the liz-jack relationship is one of the show's best joke engines if you will
― s1ocki, Sunday, 15 February 2009 19:31 (seventeen years ago)
The main point here though is that many of the jokes don't play well in large swathes of the country, which might explain the show's lack of popularity.
― Super Cub, Sunday, 15 February 2009 19:39 (seventeen years ago)
I understood the point of the sentence, it was just a preference stated within the sentence that bugged me.
― z8080 smith (some dude), Sunday, 15 February 2009 19:50 (seventeen years ago)
What part of this country isn't up for lemon parties and Frankschlongs?
― WARS OF ARMAGEDDON (Karaoke Version) (Sparkle Motion), Sunday, 15 February 2009 19:51 (seventeen years ago)
FLYOVER COUNTRY
― Super Cub, Sunday, 15 February 2009 19:53 (seventeen years ago)
WRT Flyover Country, I think the [relative] success of 30 Rock over Sunset Blvd suggests that it's better to talk over the idiots than talk down to them.

Next time I want to feel elitist about watching a network TV sitcom I will write to this guy for advice.

hah, that's a girl. i didnt particularly like that writeup for those same reasons (weirdly elitist, which was rather out of chracter) but i do like videogum a lot

the moments they chose were not very esoteric or hard to spot imo

every website that gets mentioned in any show always ends up going back to that shows website
OTM. Also can someone explain the "lemon party without Dick" joke cos I have seen every episode and I don't get it unless it's a crude sexual joke.
― Adam Bruneau, Sunday, 15 February 2009 20:30 (seventeen years ago)
it's a crude sexual joke.
― s1ocki, Sunday, 15 February 2009 20:31 (seventeen years ago)
my only problem w/ the generalissimo episode was that they went too overboard w/ liz=generalissimo. subtle parallels wouldve been way better imo.

That lemon party joke had me on the floor while 'er indoors remained on the sofa looking at me like o_O. The beauty of this show in a nutshell right there, and a wikkid parallel with The Simpsons.

yeah i was gonna say f anyone who actually means FLYOVER COUNTRY as a thing plus most people who use it "ironically" even here, but i don't even care anyway because i am too fat and stuffed with cheese and inferior middlebrow opinions

If you are too fat you must have missed the ironic distance on the constant McDonalds product placement in that last episode!
