just ran my first ever 10K (just around my neighborhood, not in a race or anything) then added an extra half mile at the end for good measure :)

i had intended on doing this on my 30th birthday in a few days, but now i don't have to live in fear of terrible failure. or at least, not not in fear of THAT terrible failure.

High five on the 10k, old man.

dschinghis kraan (NickB), Thursday, 16 May 2013 13:03 (thirteen years ago)

My face and neck is covered with the corpses of bugs after my run.

Jeff, Thursday, 16 May 2013 14:42 (thirteen years ago)

55.2 miles for the week. Most ever for me. And it is warm. May is shaping up to be a good month.

Jeff, Sunday, 19 May 2013 19:06 (thirteen years ago)

This sudden heat has brought a whole new kind of suffering to my training. 10 miles seems like 15.

Jeff, Tuesday, 21 May 2013 23:55 (thirteen years ago)

May is DONE. 212 miles, highest ever.

Jeff, Friday, 31 May 2013 00:22 (thirteen years ago)

daaaaang!

your holiness, we have an official energy drink (Z S), Friday, 31 May 2013 00:27 (thirteen years ago)

if you weren't so lazy you could go on a run tomorrow, you know.

your holiness, we have an official energy drink (Z S), Friday, 31 May 2013 00:28 (thirteen years ago)

I was about to post how pleased I was to have run 3.75 miles this week.

the girl from spirea x (f. hazel), Friday, 31 May 2013 00:49 (thirteen years ago)

It's all relative. 3.75 is great if that is what you are doing!

Jeff, Friday, 31 May 2013 00:51 (thirteen years ago)

May is DONE. 212 miles, highest ever.

that's awesome. Bring on the heat!

I've been sticking to 30/wk but have been getting back into swimming, abt a mile at a time, 2 or 3 times per week. Such a great complement to running but oh, so boring. It's as much a mental challenge to stay in the pool as it is physical.

tobo73, Friday, 31 May 2013 00:54 (thirteen years ago)

The scariest thing about all this is that my shorts keep getting shorter. I used to be very anti-short shorts, but I tried them and I don't think I can ever go back. I'm down to a 3.5" inseam split shorts.

Jeff, Friday, 31 May 2013 00:54 (thirteen years ago)

Thinking about starting running on my lunch hour. In DC. Right when summer kicks in. I know.

But I think my office is in the perfect place to do it. I've got a couple of bridges nearby that I can easily measure distance on. I've been doing long walks over lunch for the last couple months. It's probably just the right time for me to start.

So I'm wondering if there's any advice from other ilxors who run on their lunch hour. I haven't done any running in about 5 years, and when I did I was always setting out from home. We've got a shower at work. Bring a change of clothes, some running shoes, and a towel and I should be okay, right?

how's life, Friday, 31 May 2013 00:55 (thirteen years ago)

Also, re: short shorts. The closest thing I have is basketball shorts. I'm going to look/feel like a goober aren't I?

how's life, Friday, 31 May 2013 00:55 (thirteen years ago)

No more of a goober than I do in short shorts. I'm ok with it on the lakefront path, but running down the street to get to the path past all the bro bars, I do get yelled at from time to time.

Jeff, Friday, 31 May 2013 00:57 (thirteen years ago)

3.5 inches is pretty damn short tho, you're basically asking for it

tobo73, Friday, 31 May 2013 00:59 (thirteen years ago)

running in the middle of the day in the summer suxxxxxx. i don't even like to run in the morning when it's less hot i just hate running in the bright sun. shower at work is cool though. that's not advice, sorry. any shorts you want are ok imo but basketball shorts are probably gonna be not so comfortable in the heat?

i just came here to say now my new thing is i just have to run more than i did last week. even if it's one minute more. so since i only ran 5k once last week i have exceeded my goal by running 20 minutes on two different days. also i am working on running slower because i always try to go too fast. it's already working. i have so much more endurance going uphill.

veryupsetmom (harbl), Friday, 31 May 2013 01:00 (thirteen years ago)

Did 5 days of 8.5 miles this week. NY (Prospect Park) and DC (Rock Creek). 43 miles total. Use the Runkeeper app. Downloaded Mapmyrunplus, but don't like it. Long time lurker, and runner, 4 days a week. 1,800 miles a year. New music all the time.

paulhw, Friday, 31 May 2013 02:34 (thirteen years ago)

i think i do like ~1200/yr

id actually like to run less than i do but idk what to transition to more of. i dont like biking or swimming

johnny crunch, Friday, 31 May 2013 02:39 (thirteen years ago)

i have run 4.57 miles this week. 2 very sweaty 90 degree miles just now. all i have to do next week is run 4.58 miles. lol. i think i'll do like 6 though.

veryupsetmom (harbl), Friday, 31 May 2013 15:19 (thirteen years ago)

yeah, I can run in crazy heat, but only before sunrise/after sunset. direct sun just saps my strength. in a couple months I'll be doing runs at sunset and it'll probably be 95 degrees out.

It's all relative. 3.75 is great if that is what you are doing!

heh, I was being silly... a year and a half ago I could do 15-20 miles a week. I'll get back there by August hopefully. I am in awe of your monthly mileage!

the girl from spirea x (f. hazel), Friday, 31 May 2013 15:32 (thirteen years ago)

I've never had too much trouble running in the heat until I started doing speed workouts. So hard to hit the goal paces. Easy running in the heat isn't too bad.

Jeff, Friday, 31 May 2013 15:45 (thirteen years ago)

i ran 7.48 miles this week. maybe 9 or 10 next week.

veryupsetmom (harbl), Saturday, 8 June 2013 17:25 (thirteen years ago)

i bought new running shoes last week -- a day's wages! -- and i haven't gotten out there yet. i can run up to 3 miles comfortably at a good pace. i'm considering bringing my dog along one of these days so i'll have company. in the past she has wanted to go too fast for me and, in general, would seem disappointed when i got tired and wanted to stop, almost embarrassed to be seen with me as i was groaning and breathing heavily but maybe that was my imagination.

Treeship, Saturday, 8 June 2013 17:29 (thirteen years ago)

got struck down with a cold last sunday, so I missed a week, which is frustrating, but I'm still rarin' to go so I'm not too worried. I suspect the sudden onslaught of dieting + running made me susceptible to illness.

the girl from spirea x (f. hazel), Saturday, 8 June 2013 17:30 (thirteen years ago)

a day's wages!

does anyone have any experience with Target, K-Mart, or other off-brand running shoes? Wondering if there are any "secret weapons" out there.

how's life, Saturday, 8 June 2013 17:55 (thirteen years ago)

Payless...

how's life, Saturday, 8 June 2013 17:56 (thirteen years ago)

I usually look for shoes that are on clearance... try 6pm.com, or normal running shoe places and sort by price from low to high.

the girl from spirea x (f. hazel), Saturday, 8 June 2013 17:57 (thirteen years ago)

i got brooks pureflow at nordstrom rack for like $55 and i love them. my old shoes were $110, i got fitted for them at the running store, and they made my feet cramp.

veryupsetmom (harbl), Saturday, 8 June 2013 18:21 (thirteen years ago)

Yeah, I'm already pretty good at finding $40-$50 shoes at DSW or wherever. I hadn't heard about 6pm.com, so thank you. That'll be another option. What I'm really interested in is what happens when you push the price down into the $20-$30 range. I mean, conventional wisdom would be that I'd regret it, and I really don't want to fuck around with my feet. Just wondering if there's some like "basic dudes don't know this, but this K-mart off-brand sneaker is made in the same factory as ...." or whatever.

how's life, Saturday, 8 June 2013 18:27 (thirteen years ago)

Ran Ragnar Chicago. Very tired now. Relays are different, different challenges. Ended up running each leg much faster than I had anticipated, but once I started passing people, I became addicted. Slept maybe 1 hour in two days.

Jeff, Saturday, 8 June 2013 20:43 (thirteen years ago)

hahaha, thanks for asking, because I hit up 6pm.com and they have Fila Simulite 2s on sale for $30!

the girl from spirea x (f. hazel), Saturday, 8 June 2013 20:44 (thirteen years ago)

The truth about shoes is they probably don't matter nearly as much as people think they do.

the girl from spirea x (f. hazel), Saturday, 8 June 2013 20:53 (thirteen years ago)

hello runners. i am much less fit than when i last posted in this thread, but have started running/exercising again partly in terror at being out of shape. ran the manchester 10k two weeks ago, which was a fun day & hectic & i was v pleased to completely knacker myself to get under an hour (quite a bit faster than i'd been training), but really feeling the extra stone or two i've put on since i was last running. i am now a gymist, so i'll see how it goes.

Pretty much OTM. I really like simple shoes, that are light and offer moderate cushioning. No crazy stuff. Currently really liking my Asics Gel-Lyte 33 2's (despite the stupid name).

Jeff, Friday, 14 June 2013 15:48 (thirteen years ago)

Have been alternating between Asics Gel Hyper 33's and Asics Gel Excel 33's. No idea what the technical difference is between those and your shoes but I think they're pretty similar and I like them a lot. Mine are both in a really nasty fluorescent yellowish-green cos they were on special offer. Only reservation about them is that the upper seems to wear thin quite quickly over my big toes, but maybe that's just my feet.

dschinghis kraan (NickB), Friday, 14 June 2013 16:11 (thirteen years ago)

I basically end up buying every single color scheme of the models I use. Easier to tell them apart so I can keep track of miles.

Jeff, Friday, 14 June 2013 16:44 (thirteen years ago)

10K race today. Finished in 42:59 which is a PR by 1:54. It was warm. Now I'll officially start marathon training for the fall.

Jeff, Monday, 17 June 2013 00:53 (thirteen years ago)

Nice!

I wish these had longer than a 1" inseam. Because they would be awesome. As it stands, they would be kind of lewd.

Jeff, Friday, 21 June 2013 00:17 (thirteen years ago)

Went over 1000 miles for the year today. Last year I didn't get to 1000 until December 16th.

Jeff, Friday, 21 June 2013 00:28 (thirteen years ago)

And today I eclipsed my mileage total from last year. 1075 to date.

I did not buy the galaxy shorts. Chicago lakefront runners are grateful.

Jeff, Sunday, 30 June 2013 00:11 (twelve years ago)

if those shorts came in a 5"-7" inseam I would totally rock them. On that note, why don't more breweries make technical shirts?

Hit 108 here today, so I'm going to hold off until tomorrow with my run.

the girl from spirea x (f. hazel), Sunday, 30 June 2013 00:35 (twelve years ago)

Yikes! That's toasty.

Jeff, Sunday, 30 June 2013 00:44 (twelve years ago)

I wait until after sunset to head out anyway, but even then it'll still be about 98. Also, I am coming off a two-day bender.
