I remember sitting down with my little girl cousin to watch the old incarnation of MLP in about 2006? and thinking, "damn, this is pretty entertaining."

I've not seen Friendship is Magic, but damn, these guys are...odd. Has anyone come up with a theory as to why so many badly socialized young men are transfixed by this show for young girls?

Is this the hikikomori phenomenon arriving in the West at last?

arctic mindbath (President of the People's Republic of Antarctica), Thursday, 6 June 2013 00:24 (thirteen years ago)

I have not studied this in depth or anything but my guess is most of them just like being in some community and having something to talk about, sorta dig that they get to be absurdist in a 'look at me' way, don't actually enjoy the cartoons that much or I mean maybe it's moderately entertaining, who knows. and then a few are probably just perverts.

iatee, Thursday, 6 June 2013 00:34 (thirteen years ago)

yeah, I guess so. also, this really doesn't bear much in common with hikikomori either, more of an odd interest blown up a few degrees. I should stop posting while sleep deprived.

dudes be nerdy

http://threeframes.net (gr8080), Thursday, 6 June 2013 00:37 (thirteen years ago)

I would guess the chances that a 50 y/o 'brony' is a sick pervert at heart is like 95% whereas a 15 y/o brony it's prob more like 20%

iatee, Thursday, 6 June 2013 00:39 (thirteen years ago)

do furries still even exist? that was more or less the same thing just w/ a higher pervert factor I think

these are the sorts of claims that would get the mods angry at you back in the heyday of rolling teenpop

lol at the hopeful and naive suggestion that furries could be some kind of passing fad

'look at me I like this trashy pop culture object that was intended for little girls, let's talk about it together online'. early ilm is total broniville.

iatee, Friday, 7 June 2013 19:58 (thirteen years ago)

The former has connections to hipsterdom, the latter anti-hipster pride and anti-authority authenticity fetishizing, ie they're old man rockists (often literally - "I only listen to metal but this pony song touches me to the core".)

That last jpg and gif are the best things I've seen all week. My friend Lisa is working sdcc and I am going to offer her 20 USD to attend that pony meet.

so, my friend has a temp coworker who is a brony

mh, Friday, 12 July 2013 17:52 (twelve years ago)

I've been around this guy a few times now. He's a kind of awkward lanky dude who has a temp job helping with computer hardware.

I feel like the articles saying that dudes are into this brony thing because it emphasizes socialization are on to something. This guy is kind of obnoxious in that if you relate a story, he'll try to relate a similar story. But sometimes conversations are just like a laundry list of stuff he's read, or insisting that something is better due to opinions he's read elsewhere.

He began a sentence one time with, "I'm sure we're all aware of the well-known Skyrim meme..."

I met his wife, and she was kind of awkward in the same way. Also, when they finished lunch, they were holding hands, on top of the table, with the rest of us kind of sitting there making conversation.

also I think this dude wants to fuck cartoon horses

mh, Tuesday, 16 July 2013 16:13 (twelve years ago)

why do you think he wants to fuck cartoon horses?

Treeship, Tuesday, 16 July 2013 16:21 (twelve years ago)

he's a brony
