And also that the problem isn't so much just dubya/cheney/etc, they're out office in 18 months or so. The problem is the mindset of modern american conservatism itself, with all of its simplistic, xenophobic, empiricism-rejecting and authoritarian aspects.

thing is guys, though, we need tort reform

river wolf, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 16:17 (nineteen years ago)

check this out kingfish, if you agree with most of what lindsey's saying about the economic and demographic roots of our current clusterfuck, we might not have these problems for much longer; also, we'll all be poor, but hey.

river wolf, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 16:47 (nineteen years ago)

I have a personal bias bcz I just really enjoy blaming the baby boomers for absolutely everything currently shitty about America

TOMBOT, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 16:50 (nineteen years ago)

that is because they are to blam,e not just in america but all over the west and they won't fucking let go, they have their death grip around, society culture and politics so hard and they are pulling us down into their macabre zombie dance.

Ed, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 16:52 (nineteen years ago)

I'll check the Econ piece in a bit, but I think we're going to be plenty fucked for a good while. It's one of those things that I was talking about on another thread; that in America, we have to go thru intense shit once a generation(or every so often) before we give a fuck about our culture & politics. then we spent years of blood and sweat and warface to finally boost everything up again, before our kids come along and ruin it all somewhere down the line, and their kids have to fix it one more.

Still, it'll be interesting to see what happens when a significant enough portion of the populace realize they're now "working poor" as opposed to "middle class". I think the howling angst will generate such a loud thrashing to make the most rightwing batshit cartoon in this thread look like a Buckley column.

xp

okay, i agree. it's like, jesus christ, grandpa and grandma had to go thru all this shit, make it so that we had GI bills, unions, and whatnot just for my dad to come along, attend a public university on a GI bill and a living wage, join a teachers union when he got out, and then vote repub for the rest of his life(barring the Perot vote).

kingfish, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 16:52 (nineteen years ago)

Has anyone else noticed that the cartoon at the start of this thread appears to have been changed somewhat?

Oh yeah, that canadian guy? the kid who was 15 years old when they picked him up and he's been tortured and rotting in gitmo in 5 years, he was TOTALLY guilty, and by the fact that all charges were dropped against him means that the nanny state is coddling evildoers again by making them wait five years for their trial.

"You see, children, there are different types of critical thinking: Athiest, Christian, and Sorcery, to name just a few."

Fluffy Bear Hearts Rainbows, Wednesday, 6 June 2007 20:09 (nineteen years ago)

not the first time on this thread, but i'm offended! in several different ways! it is kind of fun to read all the labels though. nice to get so many all shoved together, and how surprising to see islamic conversion and atheism cuddling so happily.

Maria, Wednesday, 6 June 2007 20:15 (nineteen years ago)

They both like to roll th' bones.

Fluffy Bear Hearts Rainbows, Wednesday, 6 June 2007 20:16 (nineteen years ago)

Damn critical thinking, this is what it gets ya

Crack's worn a bit thin, and the inner-city kids have moved on to crystal balls and gowns with stars and moons on. jesus, don't you read the papers?

from blessedcause.org:

Samantha's mom wrote her a note to "opt out" of the 7th grade Islam course. When Samantha handed her teacher the note, the teacher became angry, held up the note and shouted at the class, "Is there anyone else!?"

Is there ANYONE FUCKING ELSE? I'm sorry I meant IS THERE ANYONE. FUCKING. ELSE. !?

Eh?

chap, Wednesday, 6 June 2007 21:17 (nineteen years ago)

Should Atheism Rules and Atheist Critical Thinking both be in the same cartoon? This kid needs to work harder coming up with bogeymen - not to mention the dependency on dubious movements like Sorcery. Schools everywhere are getting forced into teaching creationism as a scientific theory, that's fine, but no school anywhere caves to the sorceror lobby and suddenly it's a national crisis.

The Egypt one makes NO sense. Does this guy not understand that in the Bible story, Moses and the Pharaoh are on different sides? It's kind of key. They might as well just start taking illustrated Bible stories and firing a label-maker randomly all over the page.

Doctor Casino, Wednesday, 6 June 2007 21:47 (nineteen years ago)

still the whip of atheist critical thinking

kingfish, Wednesday, 6 June 2007 22:00 (nineteen years ago)

Does this guy not understand that in the Bible story, Moses and the Pharaoh are on different sides

No, Moses is down here in the corner Mystery Science Theatre 3000 style. And so he's parting the waters to lead them little children away from them Islamists and gays.

To be honest, I think YOU are the one who doesn't get it. And I'm not just talking about the sorcerist lobby which you conveniently deny. I'm also talking about all the talking monkeys teaching in our schools nowadays.

humansuit, Wednesday, 6 June 2007 22:05 (nineteen years ago)

The snail and the starfish seem fairly nonplussed at the goings-on.

SORCERY FUN!

river wolf, Wednesday, 6 June 2007 22:35 (nineteen years ago)

I'm guessing the sorcery thing is some kind of anti-Harry Potter rant

dmr, Wednesday, 6 June 2007 22:44 (nineteen years ago)

Y'see, these are the guys that Chris Hedges talks about

kingfish, Wednesday, 6 June 2007 23:01 (nineteen years ago)

Wish there were "sorcery fun" classes when I was in school!!

leavethecapital, Wednesday, 6 June 2007 23:27 (nineteen years ago)

also pharaoh/moses appears to be a roman charioteer, which bugs me as well . must be because that guy has avoided being struck by "CRITICAL THINKING".

Maria, Thursday, 7 June 2007 00:38 (nineteen years ago)

No, Moses is down here in the corner Mystery Science Theatre 3000 style. And so he's parting the waters to lead them little children away from them Islamists and gays.

Right, but... the only figure seen traveling through the parted waters is Pharaoh's Public Schools (represented as a Roman charioteer, admittedly) - while the waters themselves represent the similarly EVIL "Convert" and "Gay Pride." So is Pharaoh parting the waters for himself? I'd say I wish there was a label on whatever it is that's causing the chariot wreck, but inevitably it would be a used copy of SORCERY FUN. Ooooooof. Between this guy and the one who does the furryesque, motto-laden politician portraits, it's been a pretty good hunt lately.

Setting aside the batshit vision of educational content, I also wonder about this person's grasp of educational policy. Why is it, for example, that TAXES are what keep the children from fleeing to their beloved CHRISTIAN SCHOOL and HOME SCHOOL? And if they are stuck there, why is there a VACANCY on the door? Maybe the tattoo on DEPT OF EDUCATION's bicep holds a clue, but as far as I can tell it says "EDUGRODE" which isn't very illuminating. It's a shame this artist seems to be kind of a one-issue nut - surely the grim spectre of CRITICAL THINKING has infected other sectors of our once-great nation? It's such a great bludgeon, in any case; any time someone raises concerns about your work - any kind of concerns! - you can claim they've been corrupted by CRITICAL THINKING...

Doctor Casino, Thursday, 7 June 2007 01:04 (nineteen years ago)

Jumping back above, I love how a single man is both NEA and CALIF DEPT OF EDUCATION. Meanwhile, MILITANT HOMOSEXUALITY is even groping the crucified BODY OF CHRIST, which oddly enough looks very little like any depiction I've ever seen of the BODY OF CHRIST. Isn't it customary in these cartoons to take easily recognizable images with strong metaphorical impact and then label them with something other than what they'd normally be? BODY OF CHRIST is a little on the nose, don't you think?
