The Times claims Barlow "has played Ken Barlow in the TV soap since its very first episode in 1060" so maybe he's not kidding about the past lives.

Andrew Farrell, Wednesday, 1 May 2013 10:23 (thirteen years ago)

Barlow has played Barlow?

Mark G, Wednesday, 1 May 2013 10:31 (thirteen years ago)

Tonight on Corrie - Ken Barlow takes a mysterious holiday to visit Kevin Webster who is also on a mysterious holiday

Tioc Norris (LocalGarda), Wednesday, 1 May 2013 11:14 (thirteen years ago)

Don't forget Andrew Lancel/Frank Foster, who has achieved the rare double of being an on-screen rapist while being accused of child sex offences in real life.

(Also, the first celebrity paedo scandal I can remember was Peter Adamson/Len Fairclough from Corrie.)

Eyeball Kicks, Wednesday, 1 May 2013 11:39 (thirteen years ago)

Andrew Lancel's out of Corrie anyway, but aye, if they've ditched Michael Le Vell, Roache has to go as well.

ailsa, Wednesday, 1 May 2013 11:43 (thirteen years ago)

Adamson was found not guilty, something we could maybe presume about some others here until there's been an actual trial.

you say potatooles (onimo), Wednesday, 1 May 2013 11:44 (thirteen years ago)

Not sure about anyone else, but I'm just speculating on the application and continuity of Corrie's possible policy, which was to put Michael Le Vell on gardening leave (all scenes cut from when he was charged, and he's just been "written out" indefinitely this week) until after his trial and assuming they'll have to do the same for Roache.

(skimming upthread, yes, there seems to be a assumption about Clifford more so than anyone else)

ailsa, Wednesday, 1 May 2013 11:59 (thirteen years ago)

Yes, people using his disabled daughter as a stick to hit him with kind of lacks class y'know? Especially when accusing him of using her to humanise himself. I think he's a manipulative prick who's cashed in on other people's misery for decades and if the allegations are true he should get what's coming but it's too easy to presume the guilt of celebs just because we don't like them.

you say potatooles (onimo), Wednesday, 1 May 2013 12:03 (thirteen years ago)

for real

wasn't Tory cunt Roache v. outspoken about this awful celebrity witch-hunt a couple of months ago?

ah, there we go

we're up all night to get relegated (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 1 May 2013 12:29 (thirteen years ago)

He did some Glenn-Hoddlesque interview a few weeks ago about victims having been punished for previous lives, also saying, iirc, that you shouldn't always blame men who slept with underage girls because temptation etc.

xpost

ailsa, Wednesday, 1 May 2013 12:31 (thirteen years ago)

He's had a string of crazy wackjob interviews. Talking to his dog, blaming people for past lives etc, saying he has slept with thousands of women. It's like he's been building up to this.

Tioc Norris (LocalGarda), Wednesday, 1 May 2013 12:41 (thirteen years ago)

Coronation Street star William Roache to be charged with rape

Camp Macaroni Style (snoball), Wednesday, 1 May 2013 19:36 (thirteen years ago)

xpost ha yeah he's gone a bit ott on disproving that 1991 'boring' claim

NI, Thursday, 2 May 2013 02:16 (thirteen years ago)

Jesus Christ Stuart Hall

glumdalclitch, Thursday, 2 May 2013 09:50 (thirteen years ago)

I guess that admitting it is the right thing to do in regard to his victims so it's good that he's done that at least, but yes, fucking hell.

dschinghis kraan (NickB), Thursday, 2 May 2013 09:57 (thirteen years ago)

Seriously, fucking hell.

dschinghis kraan (NickB), Thursday, 2 May 2013 10:07 (thirteen years ago)

More likely he admitted it because he knew the case against him was strong, rather than because it's "the right thing to do", whatever that means in these circumstances.

Matt DC, Thursday, 2 May 2013 10:56 (thirteen years ago)

Dunno (obv), but this seems like a quick and easy for all concerned.

Mark G, Thursday, 2 May 2013 10:58 (thirteen years ago)

well, not if they put this sick fuck in jail for the rest of his natural

we're up all night to get relegated (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 2 May 2013 10:59 (thirteen years ago)

This might be seen as a 'not much, moving on' by the public at large, particularly as the William Roache case is breaking bigger.

Mark G, Thursday, 2 May 2013 10:59 (thirteen years ago)

well, not if they put this sick fuck in jail for the rest of his natural

Doubt it, with regard to what's been confessed to so far.

Mark G, Thursday, 2 May 2013 11:01 (thirteen years ago)

More likely he admitted it because he knew the case against him was strong

Yeah, I am leaning towards that interpretation after reading about this thing a bit more. What is all this horseshit about him now wanting to 'regain his honour and reputation'? How deluded are these people?

dschinghis kraan (NickB), Thursday, 2 May 2013 11:04 (thirteen years ago)

Does anybody remember this..

Paul D-notalot used to have this 'joke' when if he got a young woman out of the audience to 'help'..

He'd point at his cheek and say 'kiss?', and when they did, he'd turn his head at the very last send and cop it on the lips.

How we all laffed....

Mark G, Thursday, 2 May 2013 11:05 (thirteen years ago)

The defence seemed to be comprised entirely of "ah you can't charge him for these things that happened like half a century ago just cos times have changed now! Back then it was fine and the families didn't mind save for keeping their kids away from him in the future, so what's the big deal? It was just a series of one-off things that happened 14 times spanning 20 years. To clarify, each time something happened it was definitely a one-off."

not lazy but clowning (Suedey 2), Thursday, 2 May 2013 11:22 (thirteen years ago)

I know this is hardly the most important aspect of all this shit which is coming out, but at this rate it'll be nigh on impossible to have any kind of jolly nostalgic 'weren't the 70s great?' programme as just about everything from that era is becoming tainted.

The Horse Rustler and the Rustler's Horse (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Thursday, 2 May 2013 12:24 (thirteen years ago)

otm, we're currently watching a celebrity edition of pointless and i can't help wondering which contestants will end up in custody

Autumn Almanac, Thursday, 2 May 2013 12:26 (thirteen years ago)

Eyeball Kicks, Thursday, 2 May 2013 12:36 (thirteen years ago)

Autumn Almanac, Thursday, 2 May 2013 12:38 (thirteen years ago)

Eyeball Kicks, Thursday, 2 May 2013 12:42 (thirteen years ago)

calling it now: all three

Neil S, Thursday, 2 May 2013 12:43 (thirteen years ago)

also have my suspicions about that bloke with the computer on that show

Neil S, Thursday, 2 May 2013 12:43 (thirteen years ago)

Oddie definitely looks like a mf with some dark secrets

As i said upthread, wonder which of today's celebrities will be getting arrested 30 years from now

Bees Against Racism (Tom D.), Thursday, 2 May 2013 13:24 (thirteen years ago)

I don't think it necessarily projects that way, even taking into account intimidation and fear of not being believed, people are probably more likely to go to the police now than in the 70s and 80s. Even if they aren't, it's unlikely to take 30 years.

Matt DC, Thursday, 2 May 2013 13:27 (thirteen years ago)

i thought all these old scrotes would get away with it, due to it being so long after the fact and the grim stats about sex crime convictions. kinda shocking, but good, that stuart hall has fallen - means it all can't be spun into a 'this whole post-savile investigation was a waste of time/witchhunt'

NI, Thursday, 2 May 2013 20:45 (thirteen years ago)

I can't imagine the horror that some of these victims have endured and survived. The double whammy of your rapist/abuser on the television in your living room after already infiltrating your life. A lot of my family suffered in state care in Dublin in the 50's. It's all the same I suppose, 50's catholic priests/70's television presenters. Just another case of state collusion with various sick fucks.

Jason Dowd, Thursday, 2 May 2013 21:40 (thirteen years ago)

so very sick of this sudden 'hall wishes to apologise to his victims' crap. where were your apologies 40 years ago?

Autumn Almanac, Friday, 3 May 2013 00:59 (thirteen years ago)

Hey man it's been 20 years give the guy a break, he just wants to regain some honour

...

Mark G, Friday, 3 May 2013 08:15 (thirteen years ago)

I'm pretty sure when I read that article yesterday there was a reference to an MP who is now a peer who was allegedly his accomplice. Presumably that's now been removed for legal reasons.

Matt DC, Friday, 3 May 2013 09:40 (thirteen years ago)

So Yasmin Alibhai-Brown is good for something after all then

lol ignoramus from the usa here but is this all tangentially related to jimmy saville in some way that i don't understand, some revelations tied to what they discovered w/r/t him?

christmas candy bar (al leong), Monday, 6 May 2013 21:53 (thirteen years ago)

What they uncovered seems to be at minimum a culture of looking the other way at the national broadcaster, and at worse a sustained culture of grooming within said broadcaster.

Tarby was at a different network though, so it looks like the inquiry has moved onto a stage where they are more looking at whether tv celebrities during the 70s as a whole were exploiting their fame to rape kids and taking overlooked victims' claims seriously, finally, nearly 40 years on.

Troughton-masked Replicant (aldo), Monday, 6 May 2013 21:59 (thirteen years ago)

xp Many of them are light entertainment TV figures from the 70s/80s.
