I think we lost a fair amount on it, but it was great fun and all the bands were ace.

Might turn up to that Assembly thing if I remember it at the end of the month, good line-up of speakers.

You coming to Tietchens on Thursday, Nick? Matt said he was coming along, and I'm definitely planning to, unless this stupid cold of mine gets worse.

emil.y, Tuesday, 30 April 2013 17:38 (thirteen years ago)

this thursday? eek! don't really want to miss that but i'm seeing barn owl and mountains this week already, gonna have to do some serious negotiating there...

dschinghis kraan (NickB), Tuesday, 30 April 2013 17:56 (thirteen years ago)

Yes, definitely coming on Thursday.

Does anyone putting on anything they love actually make any money? It always seems to be a success to break even with people I know.

Chewshabadoo, Wednesday, 1 May 2013 11:46 (thirteen years ago)

Oh yeah, it's tough. The default status is "losing a bit", but there's a huge difference between that and "losing a lot".

emil.y, Wednesday, 1 May 2013 12:48 (thirteen years ago)

How were the tietchens of Asmus then? I had to miss it cos B. wanted to attend some knitting demo but damn I would have been there otherwise. Did go to Mountains tonight though which was _incredible_, seriously one of the best live music things I've seen for a long time, just this lovely long flow of transportive sounds, two guys on burbling synths and guitars sounding a bit like Popol Vuh meets Terry Riley, this total cosmic ruralism vibe, so good.

Talk about disasters for the promoters though - there were only 10 or 11 people there and it was at Sticky Mikes so there was a good deal of empty space. Which I guess makes it a solid third in the lowest attended Brighton gigs I've been too (Belgian avant-skronk blues outsider Ignatz was #1 with just two people incl. me at the Cowley Club in 2010-ish; #2 was NZ underground hero Alastair Galbraith - 5 people at the Freebutt 10 years ago or something)(my all time record though was JUST ME AND NO-ONE ELSE seeing proto-fraggle punk grafters the Mega City Four in Manchester, just before they had their bried 5 minutes of fame in the early 90s). Anyhow, I did think it looked ominous when I bought a ticket for it this week and got ticket no. 1 given too me. Didn't really care about the low turnout too much myself cos it was music that you just wanted to totally zone out too and forget where you were (and tbh I was that moved by it that I actually felt like I was on the verge of weeping for a large part of the performance) but I did feel sorry for the band cos they deserve better than that (they did seem to be okay about it though). Poor Mountains!

dschinghis kraan (NickB), Friday, 3 May 2013 23:14 (thirteen years ago)

Haha, serves you right for going to see Mega City Four. Mountains sound superb, though.

Tietchens was absolutely brilliant, I thought, though the set could have been longer. Also his equipment wasn't really that visible (errr) and I like to get a chance to inspect the processes of knob-twiddling when I can (ummmm). The support guy before him was fucking TERRIBLE, though. The kind of stuff that's a contender for 'rolling worst songs of 2013'. Really don't know what he was doing on that bill. The first guys weren't really very interesting either, so I had visions of it being one of the biggest wash-outs of a gig ever, but AT was pretty much everything I was hoping for, plus some.

emil.y, Friday, 3 May 2013 23:34 (thirteen years ago)

Yeah, I've seen a few dodgy support bands recently. Tonight's lot weren't much cop, pretty annoying in fact, plus the singer took his shoes off and played in his socks. Disgusting savage - I'm not having that!

The MC4 weren't much cop in hindsight either, it's true...

dschinghis kraan (NickB), Friday, 3 May 2013 23:47 (thirteen years ago)

Hey, tell me about these bands:

http://www.songkick.com/concerts/16117859-cold-pumas-at-westhill-community-hall

I know (and like) Cold Pumas, who are the other lot?

dschinghis kraan (NickB), Friday, 3 May 2013 23:49 (thirteen years ago)

I only know Vision Fortune out of that list - they're pretty great, similarly repetitive krauty thing going on to CP and Hookworms, pretty pounding. They usually play with a fuck-off strobe light as well, which kind of adds to the effect (epileptics be warned). Also the Westhill rules. Though I won't be at that show, as I'll be watching the Residents in London instead.

emil.y, Saturday, 4 May 2013 00:32 (thirteen years ago)

Going off topic, MC4 were the first headliners I saw live, At the sadly demolished Ipswich Carribean Club. I wasn't very impressed, but that may have been partly because one of the backstage had "confiscated" my hash after threatening me with being kicked out!

There's a great video on YouTube of John Peel going to see ENT there.

Chewshabadoo, Saturday, 4 May 2013 12:10 (thirteen years ago)

That was quite well attended though. I one saw the Stereophonics on their first tour in Ipswich with about 10 others. Me and my mates went and played pool next door after the first couple of songs I am pleased to say.

Chewshabadoo, Saturday, 4 May 2013 12:13 (thirteen years ago)

Might be interested in that Cold Pumas gig.

Chewshabadoo, Saturday, 4 May 2013 12:14 (thirteen years ago)

Trying to find out who played the devastatingly poorly attended Cotton Casino show with her, I stumble across this:

What was the concert with the fewest spectators you ever attended?

Cotton Casino at the Rescue Rooms played to about 10 people when I saw her. Two of whom, my friends who'd come with me, left before the end. She was awesome.

My band (The Chemistry Experiment) have had quite a few - notable ones being with Luna in Leicester, when about 12 people showed up, half of whom were there for us (instead of Luna? WTF?), and with the Essex Green in Hull, which admittedly was a last minute show, and I don't think there was time for any publicity, but only about 3 people paid to get in. It was a brilliant show, though, and the lack of people meant that we got to do fun stuff (duelling flutes!).

Most recent one, I think, was The High Plane Drifters and Dooley Wilson at the Social in Notts - just me, my ex-boyfriend and their driver. Still, they played a blinder and we got incredibly drunk for the next two days. It all worked out well in the end.

I think the worst line-up of a show I've been to must have been Dodgy with Cast in support. My mate was (still is, really) a huge Dodgy fan, so I saw them a few times. And once met the drummer (hat man) without knowing who he was, and he was actually really nice. So. Terrible band, still.

emil.y, Saturday, 4 May 2013 14:00 (thirteen years ago)

It was good enough for them though.

Chewshabadoo, Saturday, 4 May 2013 21:33 (thirteen years ago)

Anyone for Outer Church tonight? Early start, Occult Hand are on at 7.45, and they are excellent.

emil.y, Monday, 13 May 2013 15:52 (thirteen years ago)

Not for me I'm afraid, I'm kind of feeling a bit burnt out today.

dschinghis kraan (NickB), Monday, 13 May 2013 15:59 (thirteen years ago)

Might be interested in that Cold Pumas gig.

dschinghis kraan (NickB), Monday, 13 May 2013 15:59 (thirteen years ago)

dschinghis kraan (NickB), Monday, 13 May 2013 16:00 (thirteen years ago)

dschinghis kraan (NickB), Monday, 13 May 2013 16:02 (thirteen years ago)

dschinghis kraan (NickB), Monday, 13 May 2013 16:10 (thirteen years ago)

emil.y, Monday, 13 May 2013 16:24 (thirteen years ago)

dschinghis kraan (NickB), Monday, 13 May 2013 16:33 (thirteen years ago)

Chewshabadoo, Monday, 13 May 2013 18:20 (thirteen years ago)

dschinghis kraan (NickB), Monday, 13 May 2013 18:34 (thirteen years ago)

That being to not give Murdoch any cash.

Chewshabadoo, Monday, 13 May 2013 18:37 (thirteen years ago)

dschinghis kraan (NickB), Monday, 13 May 2013 18:38 (thirteen years ago)

dschinghis kraan (NickB), Monday, 13 May 2013 18:39 (thirteen years ago)

Yargh, just confirmed a show for the 9th of June. We're playing with Plurals and Sly & the Family Drone. Come!

one thing i am looking forward too thats coming up soon is guardian alien @ the albert. don't know much of their stuff but that one song there is some of the most psychedelic shit i've heard in a good long while

dschinghis kraan (NickB), Thursday, 16 May 2013 17:55 (thirteen years ago)

When's that happening? I've heard the name several times but I think that's the first time I've actually heard them - pretty rad.

emil.y, Thursday, 16 May 2013 18:05 (thirteen years ago)

something a bit boredoms like there, that feeling of surfing on this endless crescendo. saturday 1st june anyway

dschinghis kraan (NickB), Thursday, 16 May 2013 18:12 (thirteen years ago)

was kind of tempted by that thing with Kawabata and Charlles Hayward but, hmmm, i'm not sure

dschinghis kraan (NickB), Thursday, 16 May 2013 18:13 (thirteen years ago)

Ah, well, if all goes to plan we will be bringing home a kitten on the 1st so won't be able to abandon it on its first night. Otherwise I'll be there, crying about not having a kitten.

emil.y, Thursday, 16 May 2013 18:36 (thirteen years ago)

And I'm away for that Hayward thing. Gahhh.

emil.y, Thursday, 16 May 2013 18:38 (thirteen years ago)

I saw hayward at the hope in brighton years back, was awesome

Moldy ★☆☆☆☆ (wins), Thursday, 16 May 2013 18:39 (thirteen years ago)

Got your gig in the diary Emily.

I have a ticket for the Saturday thing at the West Hill. Who’s coming? Fancy meeting before at The Evening Star before for one?

Also, I bought a ticket for Levon Vincent next Friday at Life, crowd and club will probably be a bit shit like the last time I went there, but I have allies this time, including Jabber Hands.

Chewshabadoo, Thursday, 16 May 2013 18:41 (thirteen years ago)

saw hayward with hugh hopper supporting AMT in london a few years back, was uhh hmmm ...ok?

dschinghis kraan (NickB), Thursday, 16 May 2013 18:45 (thirteen years ago)

Chewshabadoo, Thursday, 16 May 2013 19:18 (thirteen years ago)

dschinghis kraan (NickB), Saturday, 18 May 2013 11:59 (thirteen years ago)

Just been on a one pint turning into several catch-up. 7 o'clock sound good to you?

Chewshabadoo, Saturday, 18 May 2013 18:12 (thirteen years ago)

two weeks pass...

Missing this place a lot this weather. Does the heart & hand still have that awesome jukebox w beefheart & iggy & murvin 78s? Used to love that, more than made up for the anonymous brown Harvey's slurry masquerading as beer.

Don't get back often enough why because lyfe, but I'll be down in a couple of weeks for friend's wedding, which should be fun. I have the week off/might be between jobs so I may EVEN do some clubbing like a young person would.

too busy s1ockin' on my 乒乓 (wins), Thursday, 6 June 2013 14:13 (thirteen years ago)

Best of luck, Brighton clubbing be very meh.

Chewshabadoo, Thursday, 6 June 2013 18:56 (thirteen years ago)

…but all about the company of course.

Chewshabadoo, Thursday, 6 June 2013 18:57 (thirteen years ago)

lol

i tried to go clubbing last weekend. got there about 1am to find the doors closed and no signs of life. the bouncer for the place upstairs told us they'd gone home because "only 2 people turned up." christ, how bleak is that? yep, good luck wins!

jabba hands, Thursday, 6 June 2013 23:40 (thirteen years ago)

Lol yeah, I have been one of the 2 people before. I know what to expect. A wee dance to some generic tech-house followed by a walk on the beach will do me.

too busy s1ockin' on my 乒乓 (wins), Thursday, 6 June 2013 23:46 (thirteen years ago)

Haha, Jesus, really? At least that makes trying to run an indiepop club where only ten people ever show up seem less ridiculous.
