well i just have an ipad, not an iphone, so the navigation component isn't a big deal to me right now. when i mess around with maps on the device though, it's apple maps.

when i borrowed a family member's iphone to get somewhere i think i used apple maps though. lol

markers, Tuesday, 16 April 2013 02:06 (thirteen years ago)

scanner pro for "scanning"

markers, Tuesday, 16 April 2013 02:06 (thirteen years ago)

instapaper is good but really datefd

Dr. Adorbius (mh), Tuesday, 16 April 2013 02:06 (thirteen years ago)

I mean, there are apps that do that shit better now. Check out Pocket!

Dr. Adorbius (mh), Tuesday, 16 April 2013 02:07 (thirteen years ago)

for whatever reason i've never used pocket. i'm a marco fan though.

markers, Tuesday, 16 April 2013 02:11 (thirteen years ago)

honestly markers, some people who like to blog are good software developers but that's not really a good correlation

Dr. Adorbius (mh), Tuesday, 16 April 2013 02:12 (thirteen years ago)

how often do you run into problems with pocket?

markers, Tuesday, 16 April 2013 02:13 (thirteen years ago)

i'd also be interested in hearing why you think instapaper is dated

markers, Tuesday, 16 April 2013 02:14 (thirteen years ago)

it's true that it seems like he's not devoting much time to improving it now that he's got the magazine. the last major revision was fall 2011

markers, Tuesday, 16 April 2013 02:14 (thirteen years ago)

pleco, skritter, evernote, mail (ugh), zing, riposte, tweetbot, foursquare, patter, reeder, icab, pocket weather, google, google maps

ice cr?mated (Autumn Almanac), Tuesday, 16 April 2013 02:16 (thirteen years ago)

instapaper is about to get a major update (and new app, therefore new fee)

ice cr?mated (Autumn Almanac), Tuesday, 16 April 2013 02:18 (thirteen years ago)

where did you see that?

markers, Tuesday, 16 April 2013 02:19 (thirteen years ago)

marco

ice cr?mated (Autumn Almanac), Tuesday, 16 April 2013 02:21 (thirteen years ago)

i follow him on twitter, read his blog, and listen to his podcast, and i hadn't heard that

markers, Tuesday, 16 April 2013 02:21 (thirteen years ago)

but good news, so thank you for letting me know

markers, Tuesday, 16 April 2013 02:21 (thirteen years ago)

pocket has a good default view (really nice on iPad), seems to have better html/article parsing, and does better with images. not tagging as much, but I've liked the flow of it.

Dr. Adorbius (mh), Tuesday, 16 April 2013 02:22 (thirteen years ago)

at some point i may need to check it out. thank you.

markers, Tuesday, 16 April 2013 02:24 (thirteen years ago)

I actually used passbook for real flights lately! It's still only marginally useful though

Dr. Adorbius (mh), Tuesday, 16 April 2013 02:25 (thirteen years ago)

xps i'm pretty sure he mentioned it on his blog but i can't find it

ice cr?mated (Autumn Almanac), Tuesday, 16 April 2013 02:25 (thirteen years ago)

let's pray that it eventually takes off

markers, Tuesday, 16 April 2013 02:26 (thirteen years ago)

he said he's got a load of ideas he's building into the new instapaper, and that he'll be charging again because of that. it's not on his blog so assuming it was an interview. annoyed i can't find the bloody thing.

ice cr?mated (Autumn Almanac), Tuesday, 16 April 2013 02:33 (thirteen years ago)

thank you for looking though.

markers, Tuesday, 16 April 2013 02:36 (thirteen years ago)

Pocket is awesome. So is Omnifocus.

Flipboard is pretty great.

Someone explain to me why Path is so great.

The Great Forgiver (dandydonweiner), Tuesday, 16 April 2013 02:41 (thirteen years ago)

can't

ice cr?mated (Autumn Almanac), Tuesday, 16 April 2013 02:41 (thirteen years ago)

also, the UI on Path is overrated. That wheel sucks.

Path is the epitome of an app that exists simply because it can, i.e. there were a bunch of sucker investors involved.

The Great Forgiver (dandydonweiner), Tuesday, 16 April 2013 02:47 (thirteen years ago)

no one actually uses Path

Dr. Adorbius (mh), Tuesday, 16 April 2013 02:49 (thirteen years ago)

acquisition target

markers, Tuesday, 16 April 2013 02:54 (thirteen years ago)

sort of acquisition that would either spell the end of the app or its being changed into something different perhaps

markers, Tuesday, 16 April 2013 02:55 (thirteen years ago)

but yeah what mh said

markers, Tuesday, 16 April 2013 02:55 (thirteen years ago)

"acquihire", another bad joke perpetuated by the SV press/VC industrial complex.

It has no business model and only 5mm "users". Ergo, it is a platform for serving ads on an app where you're supposed to have a less polluted newsfeed.

The Great Forgiver (dandydonweiner), Tuesday, 16 April 2013 02:57 (thirteen years ago)

In other douchebag founder related news, Dennis Crowley wears his twitter handle on his race number.

get a brain Morins

Dr. Adorbius (mh), Tuesday, 16 April 2013 03:12 (thirteen years ago)

the path guy is also a massive wanker

ice cr?mated (Autumn Almanac), Tuesday, 16 April 2013 03:41 (thirteen years ago)

am i the only one who hates fake-newspaper view in readers, flipboard, etc?

zero dark (s1ocki), Tuesday, 16 April 2013 03:54 (thirteen years ago)

i haaated flipboard, lasted 10 minutes before I deleted it

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 16 April 2013 03:55 (thirteen years ago)

The thing that drove me away from iOS Mail is that when you delete the message you're reading, it goes to the next message instead of back to the inbox (diligent googling didn't turn up a solution). Also, not being able to attach stuff to a message.

Je55e, Tuesday, 16 April 2013 06:09 (thirteen years ago)

I switched back to Instapaper from pocket after one too many badly-parsed multi-page articles. It's a much nicer app though, for sure.

stet, Tuesday, 16 April 2013 10:11 (thirteen years ago)

I use readability.

Jeff, Tuesday, 16 April 2013 10:22 (thirteen years ago)

marco is a dick and pocket is much nicer to publishers so

max, Tuesday, 16 April 2013 13:39 (thirteen years ago)

IDEOLOGICALLY i go w/ pocket. dont think instapaper is a bad app or dated tho; its a little ugly but who cares

max, Tuesday, 16 April 2013 13:39 (thirteen years ago)

also who cares if sparrow will never get updated, its a great app for gmail

if you dont use gmail then mail.app is fine

max, Tuesday, 16 April 2013 13:40 (thirteen years ago)

i mean that w/r/t desktop, i dont use sparrow for iphone

max, Tuesday, 16 April 2013 13:41 (thirteen years ago)

sparrow in all things

what does this mean? did they nearly not let you on the plane?

caek, Tuesday, 16 April 2013 14:31 (thirteen years ago)

guys I didn't mention my app shame:
- Foursquare
- Facebook Messenger
- Simple (ok, not so bad, but I use an online-only bank so I am a nerdo)

Dr. Adorbius (mh), Tuesday, 16 April 2013 14:32 (thirteen years ago)

caek, some airports mysteriously don't allow you to scan a phone as a boarding pass. So I was able to do so in friggin Des Moines, Iowa, but the San Francisco airport insisted on a paper ticket

Also, it's only marginally useful in that a one-stop clearing house for passes, tickets, and coupons is only a little more helpful than going to individual apps, and you pretty much have to go to those apps and select "send to passbook" at some point anyway.
