golf is classic. if it wasn't for the devastating "slice" that plagued my swing when i was on the golf team my junior year of high school, causing me to -- in a match at Blair Academy's mountainous course -- lose all ten of the golf balls i brought with me, i probably would have never learned what true desperation feels like.

How many 5-hour Energys did Furyk down before today's round? And how many in his trailer?
― calstars, Saturday, 13 April 2013 01:05 (thirteen years ago)
Tiger dq'd? Dodgy drop on 15th?
― pandemic, Saturday, 13 April 2013 11:04 (thirteen years ago)
i can never want tiger to win, but i wouldn't wish this on him.

Wow--that would drop him to one under. My first thought was that (somehow) the network would never allow him be disqualified from a major where he was two back going into the weekend. I don't know: Augusta is supposedly all-powerful when it comes to dictating what's what, but then television can be too. Anyway, the penalty could effectively end his chances anyway, though it's still early.

Surely he should have known he was taking an illegal drop? Therefore should be dq'd.

I mean it would be a BS thing to get kicked for but under the rules I don't see how they come up with that compromise.
― pandemic, Saturday, 13 April 2013 14:00 (thirteen years ago)
Be interesting if he goes on to win it
― Tom D (Tom D.), Saturday, 13 April 2013 14:00 (thirteen years ago)
Okay, the 3 examples I can see of where they may not dq someone for a breach of the rules aren't anything like Tiger did. i)a double hit not felt by the competitor or seen by his playing partner only picked up via super slow replay. ii)HD tv replay showing a few grains of sands being displaced during backswing when playing from wall of a bunker iii) when replacing a marked ball on the putting green pushing the ball frwd a tiny amount but being sure that it oscillated back to it's original spot only to discover on HD replay that it did not.

I don't Twitter--are there any players calling for Woods to withdraw?
― clemenza, Saturday, 13 April 2013 15:13 (thirteen years ago)
i really had no idea about this rule change - traditionally he would be disqualified. i guess the point of the new rule is that there are so many people (television viewers) other than the player himself, his fellow-competitor, or rules officials who can see a breach of the rules which no one else would reasonably notice. it sort of goes against the sport's tradition of self-policing and i'd imagine a lot of people think he should withdraw

Hate Tiger to bits but this almost makes me want to win it.
Not that he was wronged or anything, just be amazing to see.
― xyzzzz__, Saturday, 13 April 2013 15:45 (thirteen years ago)
if that's to happen, it has to be by 2 shots or less for maximum effect
― cozen, Saturday, 13 April 2013 16:14 (thirteen years ago)
Rules of golf suck anyway hon tiger g'lad yourself
― privilege as 'me me me' (darraghmac), Saturday, 13 April 2013 16:52 (thirteen years ago)
This is the guy who declares Tiger a lock in every major as soon as he makes his first birdie, so take it with a huge grain of salt:

tim clark needs a par on 18 for 66
― brony james (k3vin k.), Saturday, 13 April 2013 18:41 (thirteen years ago)
(xpost) It's an odd article. I also don't think it would be awesome if Tiger came back and won--it would inevitably be a tainted victory (no matter by how many strokes, if you believe he shouldn't have continued at all).

― call all destroyer, Saturday, 13 April 2013 22:51 (thirteen years ago)
Did I hear right that his only PGA victories are the two majors? If he wins tomorrow, that will be quite a strange resume. (That's not a knock, I like him too.)

Angel is one of the best characters in golf atm.
― Spottie_Ottie_Dope, Saturday, 13 April 2013 22:59 (thirteen years ago)
xp yup, and he hasn't been a big winner in europe either. the masters is one thing, esp because some ppl seem to have a knack for the course, but winning a us open is pretty nuts.
― call all destroyer, Saturday, 13 April 2013 23:04 (thirteen years ago)
another masters, another year in which freddie c. falls out of contention during the weekend.

― brony james (k3vin k.), Sunday, 14 April 2013 02:38 (thirteen years ago)
As my posts here indicate, I've rooted for Tiger Woods long past the point of most people. But it's sad to go to cnnsi.com this morning and see that their front-page story is again one Michael Rosenberg defending Tiger playing on, and explaining all the bad luck he's had to keep him from the lead. Not Angel Cabrera, who gets a link tucked underneath: "Snedeker, Cabrera share Round 3 lead." That's not Woods' fault--they really ought to give this writer some time off, though.

thank you for alerting me to the existence of this guy; he is hilarious
― call all destroyer, Sunday, 14 April 2013 16:02 (thirteen years ago)
The weirdest thing is not just dwelling on the penalty, but still making a big deal about the shot that led to it, the one off the flagstick back into the water. Hitting a good golf shot and getting a less than favourable result--that never ever happens in golf, right?
"And at the 8th hole on Saturday, a short birdie circled the cup before spinning out."
Again--unheard of. This is a bizarre chain of events Tiger's been subjected to.
― clemenza, Sunday, 14 April 2013 17:28 (thirteen years ago)
to be fair, both those were very unusual -- tiger himself said hed never seen a lip out like that one. & im sure theres some advanced stats out there abt hitting the pin, it's gotta be like once in a thousand approach shots or something?
― johnny crunch, Sunday, 14 April 2013 17:33 (thirteen years ago)
dont get me wrong, that article was garbage
― johnny crunch, Sunday, 14 April 2013 17:34 (thirteen years ago)
Hitting a great/perfect shot into a hazard doesn't happen often.
― Spottie_Ottie_Dope, Sunday, 14 April 2013 17:37 (thirteen years ago)
that lip out was wild
it spun round the whole cup
