I think the guy was Geoff Leigh?
― Chewshabadoo, Monday, 8 April 2013 16:28 (thirteen years ago)
Oh okay, that guy was only in Henry Cow for a short while, but it looks like he's played with a whole ton of people over the years. Great that lots of their ex-members are still making kranky music.
― acid in the style of tenpole tudor (NickB), Monday, 8 April 2013 16:41 (thirteen years ago)
err cranky, nothing at all to do with the krankies

I don't know Infinite Gaaah! I do know Pengo though

Tonight I will be enjoying the sludgy psychedelic sounds of White Hills. Anyone else going?

Another time probably, got a mad crazy week of work this week.

Quiz next Tuesday is THATCHER DEATH SPECIAL. Come!
― emil.y, Thursday, 18 April 2013 15:59 (thirteen years ago)
topical!
anyone going to protest against the edl on sunday? i do feel the urge to stand up and let them know they're not wanted, but on the other hand, they do seem to revel in the controversy. also last year's scenes were not good at all, don't really want to get caught up in that.
― dschinghis kraan (NickB), Thursday, 18 April 2013 16:30 (thirteen years ago)
I always have the same mixed feelings, really. Usually decided by whether I'm actually awake (nb: I'm rarely awake).
― emil.y, Thursday, 18 April 2013 16:34 (thirteen years ago)
Away in Glasgow, but wouldn’t want to acknowledge them anyway. Hopefully I will make the quiz though, but it depends how much buckfast, amyl and battered confectionery is shoved in my direction over the weekend.

BUCKY BUCKY BUCKY.
― emil.y, Friday, 19 April 2013 00:11 (thirteen years ago)
my only experiences of Brighton are:
Playing a DJ set on either the first or second night the Green Door Store had opened - I was on after Dylan Nyoukis and saw him look absolutely disgusted when I played Hot in Herre by Nelly
Going to a dancehall night at some club on the seafront and buying the literal worst fried chicken in the world after. It looked like an alien carcass.

How were White Hills? Saw em in London on Wednesday and they were noisy - not as loud as Swans but somehow managed to destroy my hearing
― pssstttt, Hey you (dog latin), Friday, 19 April 2013 08:28 (thirteen years ago)
To be honest I didn't enjoy them as much as I'd hoped, partly cos I was really tired but also I think the sound wasn't that great - the drummer seemed to be way too loud compared to the guitar. I don't think he's that subtle anyway, so a lot of the time it sounded like he was just bashing away and pummeling the space out of the songs. Maybe that why your ears hurt? They definitely had their moments though.
OTOH Sightings the previous week were flat-out incredible.
― dschinghis kraan (NickB), Friday, 19 April 2013 09:33 (thirteen years ago)
I've always had a bit of trouble parsing White Hills for these reasons - they sound a bit busy for space-rock. And yeah, it was like a wall of distortion which, while not that loud seemed to hit quite a vicious and constant frequency that probably played havoc with my eardrums. They're still ringing and numb two days later.
― pssstttt, Hey you (dog latin), Friday, 19 April 2013 09:44 (thirteen years ago)
Quiz tonight, chums.
Also, you guys seen that ASMUS FRICKIN' TIETCHENS is coming to Brighton?
― emil.y, Tuesday, 23 April 2013 14:34 (thirteen years ago)
My friend mentioned that to me, I had to admit my ignorance, but I’m planning on coming.
― Chewshabadoo, Tuesday, 23 April 2013 14:44 (thirteen years ago)
Asmus Tietchens is doing the quiz? This is great news!
Hoping to make it, my wife's a bit poorly though so will have to see what sort of a state she's in when I get home. Matt are you quizzing?
― dschinghis kraan (NickB), Tuesday, 23 April 2013 14:58 (thirteen years ago)
One thing I will say is that I'm not sure how much I can be arsed to put the work in for much longer, so fuck knows if there will be any more quizzes. I don't think the dude from the pub advertises them, and I don't like having to berate my friends to come every time.
― emil.y, Tuesday, 23 April 2013 17:40 (thirteen years ago)
Should be there. Still at work but leaving soon, may be a tiny bit late after food, but it’s the booze not the winning that counts.
― Chewshabadoo, Tuesday, 23 April 2013 17:45 (thirteen years ago)
^^^ I like your thinking.
― emil.y, Tuesday, 23 April 2013 17:50 (thirteen years ago)
Dufus here started checking out Tietchens, realised I have a couple of his 80s records in my Discogs wantlist already!
― Chewshabadoo, Thursday, 25 April 2013 09:18 (thirteen years ago)
Just in case anyone reading the thread is at a loose end tonight, we're putting on a show at the Green Door, from 7.30pm - Tyrannosaurus Dead, Cosines, Joanna Gruesome and the Bastards of Fate.
― emil.y, Saturday, 27 April 2013 14:07 (thirteen years ago)
^ hope it went well!
slapping this on here so i can find it again later:http://thepeoplesassembly.org.uk/brighton-and-hove-peoples-assembly-against-austerity-30-may/
― dschinghis kraan (NickB), Tuesday, 30 April 2013 17:09 (thirteen years ago)
I think we lost a fair amount on it, but it was great fun and all the bands were ace.
Might turn up to that Assembly thing if I remember it at the end of the month, good line-up of speakers.
You coming to Tietchens on Thursday, Nick? Matt said he was coming along, and I'm definitely planning to, unless this stupid cold of mine gets worse.
― emil.y, Tuesday, 30 April 2013 17:38 (thirteen years ago)
this thursday? eek! don't really want to miss that but i'm seeing barn owl and mountains this week already, gonna have to do some serious negotiating there...
― dschinghis kraan (NickB), Tuesday, 30 April 2013 17:56 (thirteen years ago)
Yes, definitely coming on Thursday.
Does anyone putting on anything they love actually make any money? It always seems to be a success to break even with people I know.
― Chewshabadoo, Wednesday, 1 May 2013 11:46 (thirteen years ago)
Oh yeah, it's tough. The default status is "losing a bit", but there's a huge difference between that and "losing a lot".
― emil.y, Wednesday, 1 May 2013 12:48 (thirteen years ago)
How were the tietchens of Asmus then? I had to miss it cos B. wanted to attend some knitting demo but damn I would have been there otherwise. Did go to Mountains tonight though which was _incredible_, seriously one of the best live music things I've seen for a long time, just this lovely long flow of transportive sounds, two guys on burbling synths and guitars sounding a bit like Popol Vuh meets Terry Riley, this total cosmic ruralism vibe, so good.
Talk about disasters for the promoters though - there were only 10 or 11 people there and it was at Sticky Mikes so there was a good deal of empty space. Which I guess makes it a solid third in the lowest attended Brighton gigs I've been too (Belgian avant-skronk blues outsider Ignatz was #1 with just two people incl. me at the Cowley Club in 2010-ish; #2 was NZ underground hero Alastair Galbraith - 5 people at the Freebutt 10 years ago or something)(my all time record though was JUST ME AND NO-ONE ELSE seeing proto-fraggle punk grafters the Mega City Four in Manchester, just before they had their bried 5 minutes of fame in the early 90s). Anyhow, I did think it looked ominous when I bought a ticket for it this week and got ticket no. 1 given too me. Didn't really care about the low turnout too much myself cos it was music that you just wanted to totally zone out too and forget where you were (and tbh I was that moved by it that I actually felt like I was on the verge of weeping for a large part of the performance) but I did feel sorry for the band cos they deserve better than that (they did seem to be okay about it though). Poor Mountains!
― dschinghis kraan (NickB), Friday, 3 May 2013 23:14 (thirteen years ago)
Haha, serves you right for going to see Mega City Four. Mountains sound superb, though.
Tietchens was absolutely brilliant, I thought, though the set could have been longer. Also his equipment wasn't really that visible (errr) and I like to get a chance to inspect the processes of knob-twiddling when I can (ummmm). The support guy before him was fucking TERRIBLE, though. The kind of stuff that's a contender for 'rolling worst songs of 2013'. Really don't know what he was doing on that bill. The first guys weren't really very interesting either, so I had visions of it being one of the biggest wash-outs of a gig ever, but AT was pretty much everything I was hoping for, plus some.
― emil.y, Friday, 3 May 2013 23:34 (thirteen years ago)
Yeah, I've seen a few dodgy support bands recently. Tonight's lot weren't much cop, pretty annoying in fact, plus the singer took his shoes off and played in his socks. Disgusting savage - I'm not having that!
The MC4 weren't much cop in hindsight either, it's true...
― dschinghis kraan (NickB), Friday, 3 May 2013 23:47 (thirteen years ago)
Hey, tell me about these bands:
http://www.songkick.com/concerts/16117859-cold-pumas-at-westhill-community-hall
I know (and like) Cold Pumas, who are the other lot?
― dschinghis kraan (NickB), Friday, 3 May 2013 23:49 (thirteen years ago)
I only know Vision Fortune out of that list - they're pretty great, similarly repetitive krauty thing going on to CP and Hookworms, pretty pounding. They usually play with a fuck-off strobe light as well, which kind of adds to the effect (epileptics be warned). Also the Westhill rules. Though I won't be at that show, as I'll be watching the Residents in London instead.
― emil.y, Saturday, 4 May 2013 00:32 (thirteen years ago)
Going off topic, MC4 were the first headliners I saw live, At the sadly demolished Ipswich Carribean Club. I wasn't very impressed, but that may have been partly because one of the backstage had "confiscated" my hash after threatening me with being kicked out!
There's a great video on YouTube of John Peel going to see ENT there.
― Chewshabadoo, Saturday, 4 May 2013 12:10 (thirteen years ago)
That was quite well attended though. I one saw the Stereophonics on their first tour in Ipswich with about 10 others. Me and my mates went and played pool next door after the first couple of songs I am pleased to say.
― Chewshabadoo, Saturday, 4 May 2013 12:13 (thirteen years ago)
Might be interested in that Cold Pumas gig.
― Chewshabadoo, Saturday, 4 May 2013 12:14 (thirteen years ago)
Trying to find out who played the devastatingly poorly attended Cotton Casino show with her, I stumble across this:
What was the concert with the fewest spectators you ever attended?
Cotton Casino at the Rescue Rooms played to about 10 people when I saw her. Two of whom, my friends who'd come with me, left before the end. She was awesome.
My band (The Chemistry Experiment) have had quite a few - notable ones being with Luna in Leicester, when about 12 people showed up, half of whom were there for us (instead of Luna? WTF?), and with the Essex Green in Hull, which admittedly was a last minute show, and I don't think there was time for any publicity, but only about 3 people paid to get in. It was a brilliant show, though, and the lack of people meant that we got to do fun stuff (duelling flutes!).
Most recent one, I think, was The High Plane Drifters and Dooley Wilson at the Social in Notts - just me, my ex-boyfriend and their driver. Still, they played a blinder and we got incredibly drunk for the next two days. It all worked out well in the end.

I think the worst line-up of a show I've been to must have been Dodgy with Cast in support. My mate was (still is, really) a huge Dodgy fan, so I saw them a few times. And once met the drummer (hat man) without knowing who he was, and he was actually really nice. So. Terrible band, still.
― emil.y, Saturday, 4 May 2013 14:00 (thirteen years ago)
It was good enough for them though.
― Chewshabadoo, Saturday, 4 May 2013 21:33 (thirteen years ago)
Anyone for Outer Church tonight? Early start, Occult Hand are on at 7.45, and they are excellent.
― emil.y, Monday, 13 May 2013 15:52 (thirteen years ago)
Not for me I'm afraid, I'm kind of feeling a bit burnt out today.
― dschinghis kraan (NickB), Monday, 13 May 2013 15:59 (thirteen years ago)
oops, pressed submit too soon. was going to say, i got a ticket for that thing. £3.50 and byob (iirc) - you can't lose!
