Ok, I don't profess to be the most knowledgable person about all of that, but I'm not sure I understand how striking down DOMA and/or Prop 8 would in any way conflict with broader and more inclusive goals regarding transgender issues, non-standard families, etc.

some ppl in the lgbtq community take issue w/ marriage equality being positioned as the civil rights issue of our time when, for instance, lgbtq ppl still face legal employment discrimination in almost half of the US (including the second most populous state, texas). for many it's not an argument about "pfft squares *eyeroll*" but about apportionment of activist resources, time, and attention. the fact that the facebook meme came from the HRC especially rankles because the HRC is seen by many as mainly representing the concerns of wealthy white gay cismen (as seen in the ENDA controversy). (should also point out that marriage equality advocates also have legitimate complaints w/ the HRC—for instance, they did little to combat prop 8.)
