Maybe the point was that it's more difficult now to decide to what extent this is satirical. Which imo is what makes it even more impressive and what sort of gives some of those conservative critics a leg to stand their arguments on.

...no it's not this is the guy that made gummo.

fauxmarc, Thursday, 28 March 2013 14:01 (thirteen years ago)

I'm only speaking about the people approaching this movie with no prior knowledge of Harmony Korine.

its also less far from my memory of 'mr lonely', widely considered a critical failure right? than ppl might want to remember -- very aimless w/ a decent color palette & ok music but wholly lacking tension/characterization/purpose (imo)

i feel like 10-15 years ago we would have heard the mom/grandma side of the phone conversations, but that would have been a very different film

did anyone see the bit (clipped on the soup) of korine talking about meeting his wife?

― goole, Wednesday, March 27, 2013 11:13 AM (Yesterday) Bookmark Flag Post Permalink

haha yessss this was amazing, was shocked/disappointed to not find the footage or any similar commentary on it online (basically he talks about how his wife is 26 and "we met about 10 years ago [akward pause], actually we met 8 years ago")

Diddy-Drugs A. Money (some dude), Thursday, 28 March 2013 15:26 (thirteen years ago)

can't wait to see this, hopefully it achieves the same heights as gummo's chair wrestling scene

Spectrum, Thursday, 28 March 2013 15:28 (thirteen years ago)

lol who is jordan bloom, this guy is good

Debbie Schlussel says, with her usual blend of moderation and critical insight, “every single person involved with this movie is a complete scumbag unworthy of human life” and gives it “four Marxes plus four Obamas plus four Bin Ladens” which must mean it’s really bad. Some Breitbart guy didn’t really get it so he isn’t worth quoting.

goole, Thursday, 28 March 2013 15:45 (thirteen years ago)

four Marxes plus four Obamas plus four Bin Ladens walk into a bar

Diddy-Drugs A. Money (some dude), Thursday, 28 March 2013 15:49 (thirteen years ago)

if I have four Marxes and suzy has four bin ladens and tommy has four bin ladens...

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 28 March 2013 15:52 (thirteen years ago)

...and would you be surprised to hear that circa age 20, Mrs Korine was doing an internship (arranged by hubby) at a certain Edgy Style Magazine?

karl lagerlout (suzy), Thursday, 28 March 2013 15:55 (thirteen years ago)

ugh im so tempted to parse and analyze that weird conflation of obama/marx/bin laden since it's totally incoherent but it's just fucking stupid and for my own sake I'll have to leave it at that.

ryan, Thursday, 28 March 2013 15:57 (thirteen years ago)

take three qualities you don't like in each (marx = communist, bin laden = 9/11, obama = black), generalize it, and it all fits nicely together.

Spectrum, Thursday, 28 March 2013 15:59 (thirteen years ago)

haha thank you that quiets the cognitive dissonance i was experiencing.

johnny crunch, Friday, 29 March 2013 14:13 (thirteen years ago)

Ok, I have finally seen this. The hype outweighed the movie itself by a pretty wide margin -- this was not particularly sensational in content unless you live under some kind of blandness dome.

I thought it was sign-o-the-times noteworthy that Faith/SG (the only character whose name I can remember, outside of Alien) kept going on and on about how beautiful and magical and spiritual and transcendental she felt spring break was, how she had found true enlightenment in this paradise of good wonderful kind generous people...who, when you looked at them, were constantly flipping off the camera while literally having alcohol funneled into their naked bodies both before and after playing with guns. Not that the latter was surprising at all (except for the fixation on guns, not sure what that was about), but the stuff about how ~magical twinkle star soft grunge love people~ everything seemed very zeitgeisty.

For better or worse, the twins were classic Korine. The Britney montages and gun blowing were memorable. Vanessa Hudgens was my favorite character because I could see in her eyes when she was lying to her parental figure on the phone that she really dngaf.

and that sounds like a gong-concert (La Lechera), Friday, 29 March 2013 14:26 (thirteen years ago)

She was the Telly of this movie, I guess?

I still think that the movie is some good intentional/unintentional trolling of kids who think they're going to get a dumb teen/heist film and end up with Korine-lite instead.

The kids behind us at the theater who kept grumbling, especially the guy who exclaimed, "That was the dumbest movie I've ever seen!" are probably evidence of success.

question: how does this compare to the cheerleader bank robber movie "Sugar and Spice."

ryan, Saturday, 30 March 2013 20:11 (thirteen years ago)

haha i was just talking to someone on twitter the other day about how much i love that movie and don't think i could enjoy Spring Breakers as much

no direct korine connection (i think) but how's it compare to bully?

balls, Sunday, 31 March 2013 03:23 (thirteen years ago)

I've never been to Florida but love this, Magic Mike, and Miami Vice about equally.

cougars and sneezers (Eazy), Sunday, 31 March 2013 03:44 (thirteen years ago)

i really enjoyed this but i thought the first half was better than the last half, which needed someone better than gucci mane imo

Woody Ellen (Matt P), Sunday, 31 March 2013 03:49 (thirteen years ago)

Saw this today; my wife and I were the only people in the theater. I loved it. The student has surpassed the teacher - Larry Clark hasn't made anything 1/8 this awesome since Bully. Just about every element - the music, the photography, the performances (Hudgens in particular) - was perfect. Could have done with a little less repetitive looping of the dialogue, especially in the run-up to the climactic raid on Gucci Mane's compound, but overall it was extremely tight in its drifty way, and it looked phenomenal.

will be really sad if this doesn't come to the theatre here. but somehow i doubt it will. its playing in normal movie places, right? not just arty places.

scott seward, Sunday, 31 March 2013 17:24 (thirteen years ago)

yep, normal places

Yep, I saw it at my local 12plex. Trailers for the new Marky Mark/The Rock movie (which looks fucking awesome), Iron Man 3, etc.

誤訳侮辱, Sunday, 31 March 2013 17:39 (thirteen years ago)

yeah the teen audience gave a WHOOP with the opening credits & then stunned silence with the boobs + bong hits, lol. But they warmed up pretty quick

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Sunday, 31 March 2013 17:47 (thirteen years ago)

some girls in the bathroom afterwards were like 'ugh it was like a porn, too many boobs'

but then another group were like 'it was cool! there's no way that would ever happen tho'

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Sunday, 31 March 2013 17:50 (thirteen years ago)

made at my arthouse spot we just got boring trailers (except for the silence) and of course no PAIN & GAIN or iron man 3

fauxmarc, Sunday, 31 March 2013 17:52 (thirteen years ago)

Nelson George ‏@nelsongeorge 1m
'Spring Breakers' is exploitation with art house pretensions. Didn't believe or enjoy James Franco's "white Negro." Nicely edited. But trash

curmudgeon, Sunday, 31 March 2013 17:58 (thirteen years ago)

I take it Nelson George is unaware of the existence of Riff Raff, then?
