is there a way to encourage healthy & positive masculinity that doesn't involve appealing to the continuity of male lineage?

this is something that's been on my mind in the past few days, how these antiquated models of masculinity are invoked against uncertainty. the idea that virtue is a birthright passed through the male bloodline, whether or not our progenitors were actually good men. all these appeals to the way our grandfathers did things, and the conceit that fatherhood is the measure of a fully realized man.

for ex. the "rules for my unborn son" blog is framed in such a way, but really doesn't have anything to do with parenting.

in many contexts, children are the only acceptable way to express your innate self-regard so none of this really surprises me
(had a more loaded word there, removed it because I only want to be slightly accusatory rather than double-barrelled)

I feel like there's a parallel to the modern career situation, especially as far as the emphasis on individualism. We've lost a lot of situations where people are apprenticed to a career, or have a clear-cut path as far as career advancement goes, partially due to an emphasis on free agency and otherwise due to the concentration on college education over skilled trades and union-led trades.
Having generic signifiers and signposts of adult manhood seem like another attempt to patch this hole of how to live your life.
― ☠ ☃ ☠ (mh), Wednesday, 20 March 2013 18:57 (thirteen years ago)
on the one hand, you can see a sort of tenderness in the way these guys try to figure it out. they teach and encourage and role model for each other. they are instructing each other how to shave and how to dress and how to behave towards women -- in a practical way, they are sort of fathering each other and finding models of manhood that were otherwise lacking in their lives.
on the other hand, a lot of the stuff they end up transmitting is privileged retrogressive dogmatic bullshit so idk :(

i dont feel like people caring ab their grandfathers is actually a very popular thing or an increasing trend or anything, even like wearing some sick as filson woodsman gear isnt that popular, most guys wear tshirts and find their grandfathers irrelevant

As members of Gaybros—a Reddit-based community for gay guys with traditionally manly interests like sports, hunting, and beer—the large majority of their bonding takes place through comment threads under topics like “Ron Swanson vs. James Bond” and “My Gay Card Has Been Revoked.”

tip to gaybro internet dating consists mostly of meeting people you dont want to have sex with
― lag∞n, Wednesday, 20 March 2013 23:56 (thirteen years ago)
My friend's dad is a gay man who loves all that manly shit and remodels homes for a living, but he also really looks like a cross between Patrick Swayze and one of the village people. Which is how I thought he seemed when he was married to a woman, so that is really not dependent on sexuality.
So yeah, the hallmarks of "masculinity" are as much a ruse when it comes to sexuality as anything. I think, social activity-wise I code as gay by their metric but I'm not at all interested in guys.
― ☠ ☃ ☠ (mh), Thursday, 21 March 2013 00:03 (thirteen years ago)
Do we have proof they're not just narcissists or simple-minded and just can't imagine dating someone who doesn't have the exact same interests?
― ☠ ☃ ☠ (mh), Thursday, 21 March 2013 00:04 (thirteen years ago)
if i was gay id be a gaybro who hates gaybros and therefor the ultimate contemporary individual
― lag∞n, Thursday, 21 March 2013 00:04 (thirteen years ago)
think the key part of the word here is 'bro'
they're gay AND they're bros. their narrow-minded broitude happens to be limited to their world of beer and video games and being gay. bein a bro means almost by definition getting defensive about one's bro-ness, anyone that doesn't bro-down is just stuck up and so not a bro and w/e dude you can't even

the 'interests' are just code, i think
― open the blood gates (elmo argonaut), Thursday, 21 March 2013 13:17 (thirteen years ago)
i mean, we're just talking about gay men who feel uncomfortable and even outright hostile towards what they see as feminine characteristics in dress, speech, movement, & behavior. you don't necessarily have to share all the same interests, you just have to hate femmes.

RE the menaissance video: this "movement" has been going on for a long time. I knew dudes who were "getting in touch with their manliness" back in the early 90's. Tough guy commercials, men's movements, complaints about feminizing males, etc have been common for over 20 years. The man show came out before metrosexual was coined. "Dumb dad" shows like home improvement were, in part, created as a response to this nostalgia for manliness. The first wave of video-gaming adults were struggling with gender anxiety when they were still children. Guides for men on manners and clothing were gaining in popularity 20 years ago--they were released as books, because there was no internet.
His entire speech is a-historical and suffers, in part, from the inability to see past the dawn of the internet. Like dudes who think they started something because they were around at the beginning of Reddit or whatever.

Elmo's link to Jack Donovan is sending me down a rabbit hole of "the alternative right" - gems such as We offer a simple solution here:
Promote the idea of Futurist Traditionalism, an eternal type of government that avoids the eternal problem of Crowdism.Unite the 2-5% of our society who are independent thinkers and respected local leaders (police, teachers, politicians, clergy, business leaders, artists and athletes) around this ideal.Using democratic and other means, demand that we be given the right to have some areas of our society which are Future Traditionalist, and let others see our success.
