what do you mean by "hanging on to?"

4R cask strength single barrels aren't terribly hard to come by, at least they weren't 2-3 years ago.

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 27 February 2013 18:44 (thirteen years ago)

I guess just like save for special occasions or whatever, I have no real idea how hard that stuff is to get.

every hippie that goes home bloody feels like a martyr back in the city (dan m), Wednesday, 27 February 2013 18:48 (thirteen years ago)

i'd say it's a moderately special bottle because of price and w/e but not something you need to be super careful with because it should be replaceable.

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 27 February 2013 18:55 (thirteen years ago)

Not hard to get, really. Prince is the biggest distinguishing factor. Eagle Rare is pretty easy to drink, if you want to keep that with the 4 Roses for, what, guests? Wellers are all good, too, esp. for the price. Invest in a 12-year, or 107 ...

4 Roses single barrel is easy to find ( I just finished a bottle last week, drank it neat w/a rock), but I haven't ever seen cask strength. However, I live in a state with terrible liquor distro.

sleeve, Wednesday, 27 February 2013 18:58 (thirteen years ago)

Ha, Prince whiskey. The bottle can be half-sized and purple.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 27 February 2013 19:04 (thirteen years ago)

since u been gone I can drink whatever I waaaant

every hippie that goes home bloody feels like a martyr back in the city (dan m), Wednesday, 27 February 2013 19:09 (thirteen years ago)

OK the 4 Roses seemed p special because it is one of 10 recipes (http://fourrosesbourbon.com/ten-unique-bourbon-recipes/) but upon a little more research & answers here I feel a little better about not saving it away for all times.

every hippie that goes home bloody feels like a martyr back in the city (dan m), Wednesday, 27 February 2013 19:11 (thirteen years ago)

It's the occasion that makes it special. Bourbon just makes special occasions more special!

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 27 February 2013 19:12 (thirteen years ago)

what's fun is drinking that bottle and then getting a different recipe and trying that

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 27 February 2013 19:17 (thirteen years ago)

the four roses single barrel, barrel strength, 2012 limited edition (yes all that is on the bottle) is maybe the best bourbon i've ever had.

ryan, Wednesday, 27 February 2013 19:43 (thirteen years ago)

I have had to actively remind myself that I do not need to sip on a little Blue Label whenever I get home from work after seeing how much of it I had consumed over the course of 6 weeks

otoh it was one of the best birthday presents ever

yeah it's worth noting that the annual limited editions are more rare/special than the recipe-specific single barrels

If I have a bottle of whiskey of ANY type that lasts six weeks I will have turned into a different man

So basically they want it both ways: to be everywhere, which means less to go around, which makes it harder to be everywhere. Thems the breaks.

Tonight it's Fighting Cock, 103 proof, maybe it will do the trick.

fighting cock leaves me with a monstrous hangover -- good luck.

rittenhouse at the moment tbh

i really wanted to like the kickin' chicken, but....

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 5 March 2013 02:33 (thirteen years ago)

It goes down well with a little vermouth and bitters, but it leaves an odd taste in your mouth.

JacobSanders, Tuesday, 5 March 2013 02:40 (thirteen years ago)

i didn't hate the taste -- a little rough around the edges -- i just hate what i did to my head the next morning.

Never mind guess it's just not sold in Oklahoma.

Via some twists and turns, I'm lucking into a bottle of this special Longman & Eagle bottling of Willett:

About six months ago, we were approached by the folks from the Willett Distillery, who were in possession of a very curious find – six twenty-one year old (!) ‘mystery’ barrels of bourbon.

After some research, it’s thought that these are old Heaven Hill stock, presumably from a lower floor in a rickhouse that burned down in 1996. These single-barrel, barrel-proof bourbons are among the finest we’ve (ever) tasted, so we of course bought two of the six barrels for ourselves. A precious, rare find indeed…

After a month or so of quietly enjoying these two bottlings ourselves, it’s time to share this bounty with the larger public. Barrel one, ‘Longman’, is 109 proof and is limited to 106 bottles; barrel two, ‘Eagle’, came in at 100.5 proof and is even more limited at 62 bottles total – both fairly low for barrel-proof whiskey and both absolutely, totally delicious.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 19 March 2013 19:34 (thirteen years ago)

wow nice!

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 19 March 2013 19:45 (thirteen years ago)

are those anchor distillery whiskies fairly available in san francisco? worth checking out?

☠ ☃ ☠ (mh), Tuesday, 19 March 2013 20:08 (thirteen years ago)

so i know the square root of fuck all about whiskey but i nearly picked up a bottle of ardberg 10 in saino's tonight before chickening out and getting reliable old glenmorangie og

now no complaints obv but still i'm wondering. basically i'm terrified of ending up with another laphroaig cos that shit was horrible (fernet branca is my one and only official mouthwash partner)

r|t|c, Wednesday, 20 March 2013 22:45 (thirteen years ago)

find a bar that has it by the glass and try it first! ardbeg is even more peaty than laphroaig, so if you don't like the latter... definitely try it first.

the girl from spirea x (f. hazel), Wednesday, 20 March 2013 22:52 (thirteen years ago)

see this is the thing with the tasting verbiage semantics game imo, peaty suggests an deep earthyness to me not just medicinal

r|t|c, Wednesday, 20 March 2013 23:09 (thirteen years ago)

i mean it's a fun game don't get me wrong

r|t|c, Wednesday, 20 March 2013 23:10 (thirteen years ago)

hold on let me mail u some ardberg real quick

乒乓, Wednesday, 20 March 2013 23:11 (thirteen years ago)

calling it ardberg and not ardbeg is probably some real n00b shibboleth for a start huh

r|t|c, Wednesday, 20 March 2013 23:12 (thirteen years ago)

for starters u should be posting in the 'whisky' thread not the 'whiskey' thread

乒乓, Wednesday, 20 March 2013 23:14 (thirteen years ago)

peaty means high peat content, not smells like peat moss

I would just recommend avoiding Islay scotches if you dislike Laphroaig.

☠ ☃ ☠ (mh), Thursday, 21 March 2013 00:08 (thirteen years ago)

yup, there are tons of whiskies out there to choose from that don't have that flavor profile so get one of those.

call all destroyer, Thursday, 21 March 2013 00:14 (thirteen years ago)

Ardbeg is the best. Doesn't have the medicinal flavour / smell of Laphroaig at all. Really deep, savoury smoke instead.

Des Fusils Pour Banter (ShariVari), Thursday, 21 March 2013 00:29 (thirteen years ago)

well now that i'd be all up for

obv f.hazel's advice is entirely sane but the lack of consensus is intriguing me

r|t|c, Thursday, 21 March 2013 00:48 (thirteen years ago)

i mean i do think ardbeg and laphroaig have some fairly different qualities but if by your own admission you know fuck all about whiskey it's the kind of thing that's better to back into after enjoying a few bottles of, like, glenmorangie or something.

call all destroyer, Thursday, 21 March 2013 00:58 (thirteen years ago)

Wish I had some of both to compare right now, and some Lagavulin for good measure.

the girl from spirea x (f. hazel), Thursday, 21 March 2013 02:09 (thirteen years ago)

Glenmorangie is one of the sweet candies of the scotch world
