It's great that the internet gives an outlet to teen angst, but an important thing you miss when you can find a consequence-free community for whatever hormonally-driven rage you are feeling is the void of the outside world. Kids these days have it too good, they don't get to feel truly alone in their feelings because they can just log on and find a handful of other people that feel the same way. It's important to have your feelings ignored; it teaches you that the world does not revolve around you.

This is a good point. The internet promotes monomania in a lot of ways and lets you dig in deeper -- or dig your heels in -- with your interests and social circles.

i dunno, i had the internet as a teenager and it didn't prevent me from feeling miserably, apocalyptically alone for much of those years. maybe i just wasn't googling the right shit? i mean actually i feel like it should make teenagers less self-centered to discover that they aren't so special, that their feelings aren't unique at all

I believe the OP meant that participating in an urban greenification program or growing your own food is a better activity for inner city youth and that these kids are saying (in their own way) "Fuck selling drugs!" because they enjoy this much better activity.

I've been checking askhistorians - far from experts, most responses appear to be from college juniors who've just read a book on whatever topic they're responding to. Which is fine, but they take themselves rather seriously.
