Bad Word obv, phone keyboard's cuntish

bbag bbag my nebby shot me down (darraghmac), Wednesday, 27 February 2013 01:28 (thirteen years ago)

See because calling a woman a cunt seems odd to start with, I take the Onion's tweet as funny at least on the "it is clearly completely ridiculous to call a sweet little child a cunt" angle, which has been mentioned above.

But then I feel weird because I realise my logic could be used to defend rape or racism jokes, which I would never do.

Though the Onion has certainly had rape and racism jokes.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 27 February 2013 02:53 (thirteen years ago)

Thats true. Somehow they work their satire in a way that shocks but doesn't offend, I dont know how to phrase it. There've been times I have gone "omg this is DARK and HORRIBLE" at their stuff but still admired it.

a kissed out red popemobile (Trayce), Wednesday, 27 February 2013 03:03 (thirteen years ago)

there have been a bunch of times when I've thought they've gone too far, but this wasn't one of them tbh.

I think it's more if someone specifically uses "cunt" in anger about a woman, it really stands out. I'd even say that it's never really used in the jokey way about women, not in my experience in uk/ireland.

With men it could be used in all sorts of ways, with the right adjective even as a term of endearment.

Tioc Norris (LocalGarda), Wednesday, 27 February 2013 07:39 (thirteen years ago)

Well, you'd be wrong. I mean, I accept that I have what Americans might call a potty mouth, but I use it all the time to anyone. I have no qualms about calling someone a dick or a prick, why would I have any qualms about calling them a cunt?

As for the original piece, I can't even believe this is causing controversy. FFS it was a pretty obvious extension of commentary, it's just some countries seem to be extremely weird about one specific term...

emil.y, Wednesday, 27 February 2013 07:50 (thirteen years ago)

Women calling other women cunts is more common and acceptable for sure, though still not par for the course, and ime never in a joking/friendly way - usually more in a bringing out the big guns way

lex pretend, Wednesday, 27 February 2013 09:43 (thirteen years ago)

K3vin how in the world is British people saying cunt remotely equivalent to str8 kids saying faggot o_0

yeah fair enough, it probably would stand out particularly if a man used it about a woman, really. my point was that it has a certain way of being used in misogynist anger that is really nasty, like "bitch" but up a few levels.

Tioc Norris (LocalGarda), Wednesday, 27 February 2013 09:50 (thirteen years ago)

The British use of "cunt" seems equivalent to the American use of "asshole", which reminds me of a joke about a golf game and a Japanese hooker.

Awesome and interesting: http://www.slate.com/articles/life/explainer/2013/02/quvenzhan_wallis_and_the_onion_tweet_why_is_the_c_word_so_offensive.html

The earliest instance of the word recorded in the Oxford English Dictionary is actually from the name of a 13th-century London street, Gropecuntelane. The name appears to have been quite literal, and there was at least one other red-light district of the same name, in Oxford.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 27 February 2013 16:24 (thirteen years ago)

well if people are going to saunter up gropecuntlane what do they expect?

again, the british usage totally confuses me. the word is gendered and seems to be rooted in hate and oppression in the same way "faggot" or the n-word is, which is why it's never used here! seems kind of obvious to me!

Two local high school children also perished in the accident, while a third was permanently paralyzed.

“The overwhelming feeling I’m left with is anger,” said Junction mayor Joel Sutter, who described the 1996 Chevy Impala Dehaene died in as “a really, really cool car.” “I keep thinking: It’s not fair. It’s not fair that Chris should die while that prick teenager gets to survive, happily rolling around in his little wheelchair.”

“What were those kids even doing on the other side of the road at 3:30 in the goddamn afternoon?” Sutter continued, his voice breaking. “They knew Chris. They knew he would be drunk.”

whoever the new management is has REALLY shitted up the site in the last year btw

zero dark (s1ocki), Friday, 1 March 2013 13:40 (thirteen years ago)

The website's been horrible for years, IMO, especially the AV club - just way too much content all over the fucking place and all this other stuff that you wouldn't even know was there without clicking on the teeny tabs that take you to the subsections (film, tv).

Doctor Casino, Friday, 1 March 2013 16:46 (thirteen years ago)

Ya but now it's all SEO-Ed and pay walled to shit

zero dark (s1ocki), Friday, 1 March 2013 17:50 (thirteen years ago)

it's kinda lol but mostly sad considering how great some of their satire of stuff like huffington post has been

some dude, Friday, 1 March 2013 18:24 (thirteen years ago)

okay it's not like I actually like the AV Club layout but complaining about the tabs in the era of tabbed browsing really just strikes me as willfully refusing to put 2 and 2 together

my super interesting Kant story (DJP), Friday, 1 March 2013 18:57 (thirteen years ago)

They're so small! They look like they're part of the banner ad! I didn't notice them for ages. Also note that you for some reason can't get to the film section by clicking on the word "Film" in current reviews. Which is under another ad for the same thing, not to mention the entire site is sandwiched between two vertical ads for...the same thing. Major features like Dan Savage are buried way at the bottom so that they look like more ads, or maybe part of a web-ring. The whole thing is just desperately ugly and cluttered.

Doctor Casino, Friday, 1 March 2013 19:10 (thirteen years ago)

AV Club works supremely well in Google Reader, so i rarely visit actual page.

Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Friday, 1 March 2013 19:31 (thirteen years ago)

the Community handwringing is doing more to drive me away from AV Club than the layout ever could

my super interesting Kant story (DJP), Friday, 1 March 2013 19:42 (thirteen years ago)

i think the sepinwalling of every single TV show is kind of OTT but they still have good content, particularly as it relates to film and tv pieces like 'random roles'.

Risky Business (1983)—“Barry”

Bronson Pinchot: We didn’t know it was going to be a big hit. We thought Tom [Cruise] was the biggest bore on the face of the Earth. He had spent some formative time with Sean Penn—we were all very young at the time, Tom was 20, I was 23. Tom had picked up this knack of calling everyone by their character names, because that would probably make your performance better, and I don’t agree with that. I think that acting is acting, and the rest of the time, you should be you, but he called us all by our character names. He was tense and made constant, constant unrelated homophobic comments, like, “You want some ice cream, in case there are no gay people there?” I mean, his lingo was larded with the most… There was no basis for it. It was like, “It’s a nice day, I’m glad there are no gay people standing here.” Very, very strange.

christmas candy bar (al leong), Tuesday, 5 March 2013 04:13 (thirteen years ago)

i like commentary of the damned too, and sometimes my year of flops. i rarely bother with their normal reviews tho

turds (Hungry4Ass), Tuesday, 5 March 2013 04:17 (thirteen years ago)

http://www.avclub.com/articles/the-boondock-saints-ii-all-saints-day-2009,43714/

In the solo half of the second commentary, Duffy talks a lot about how the real test of a good sequel is whether it “throws a curveball” at the audience by putting a twist on the first film instead of just repeating it. He goes on to describe practically everything in BS2 as a curveball. The FBI investigator is female rather than male this time? Curveball. This one focuses on her crime scenes by putting in earplugs instead of listening to music? Curveball! A third Boondock Saint who is Hispanic? Also a curveball! Delving into Il Duce’s history instead of leaving it entirely unexplored? Total curveball. That said, he seems to be pretty sure his audience isn’t bright enough to handle all these curveballs, particularly during the flashback scenes:

“The reason I was concerned is because it’s so foreign to Boondock fans. To suddenly be in 1958 New York where everything’s different. It was another curveball that we were throwin’ atcha, yes, but this time, it was visual. And it was sound, and every—you could just take these out of this movie and put them in some other movie that was a period piece, and it would look, y’know. It was something Boondock fans were not used to, suddenly being thrown back 50 years into the past. So I was extraordinarily concerned about that.” But the fans really wanted to know about Il Duce’s past, he says: “That’s another cue I took from the fan base, and another curveball that they provided for me, sort of free of charge.”

turds (Hungry4Ass), Tuesday, 5 March 2013 04:21 (thirteen years ago)

those Random Roles interviews are some of my favorite on the internet, but the TV coverage...Jesus. the Community reviews especially, I looked at one lately and it seemed like the writer was trying to get it all out before he burst into tears at the loss of Dan Harmon

ta-nehisi goatse (fadanuf4erybody), Tuesday, 5 March 2013 04:42 (thirteen years ago)

The TV coverage is all awful and all in desperate need of harder length limits IMO. Or just an editor demanding that you have something to say rather than systematically listing every joke in an episode of the Simpsons and explaining why it proves that it was the most cutting-edge show on TV at the time or whatever.
