do yiddish loan words for weeners get albionized in ways they don't in the US? like schvantzadilly circus or dorkadello road?
― Philip Nunez, Tuesday, 26 February 2013 18:27 (thirteen years ago)
I still think the c-word is exceptionally powerful...I reckon if you were having a row with someone and were accused flat out of being a cunt you'd struggle to find something to come back with, no?
In an angry context yeah but equally you could say offhandedly of someone "oh he's such a cunt" without it being an expression of deep hatred. We all have That Friend, right?
Prick vs dick vs cock vs pussy vs cunt vs twat, all have different connotations and i love them for it
― lex pretend, Tuesday, 26 February 2013 18:48 (thirteen years ago)
Several of my (female) friends have recently used it as a descriptor of my (female) roommate. I didn't/wouldn't use it myself, but I didn't disagree. Which is weird, because I almost certainly would've been all vehemently "whoa, whoa" if the friends in question were male.

from what i can tell britishers use it way more often and often male-to-male; it sort of reminds me of odd future's "fa----" use or when dumb ass kids use the n-word with each other. it's pretty stupid but, you know, britishers. in america it's RARELY used and i guess ime used against women more often, which is why it's so gasp-inducing when it is used

I have an interesting cunt story!
Let's just say the last time I saw someone call a little girl a cunt, she got her clock cleaned by said little girl's mother immediately thereafter.
― kendrick delmar - good kid, f.U.C.k. you (The Reverend), Wednesday, 27 February 2013 00:43 (thirteen years ago)
fellas can be called cunts and it's not a big deal (but it can be), but callin a woman a cunt is Baf Word territory. We all do it over here, i'm not gonna put a figure of 90-10 on it like me uk chums, but you'd know the difference alright.
― bbag bbag my nebby shot me down (darraghmac), Wednesday, 27 February 2013 01:28 (thirteen years ago)
Bad Word obv, phone keyboard's cuntish
See because calling a woman a cunt seems odd to start with, I take the Onion's tweet as funny at least on the "it is clearly completely ridiculous to call a sweet little child a cunt" angle, which has been mentioned above.
But then I feel weird because I realise my logic could be used to defend rape or racism jokes, which I would never do.
― a kissed out red popemobile (Trayce), Wednesday, 27 February 2013 02:52 (thirteen years ago)
Though the Onion has certainly had rape and racism jokes.
― Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 27 February 2013 02:53 (thirteen years ago)
Thats true. Somehow they work their satire in a way that shocks but doesn't offend, I dont know how to phrase it. There've been times I have gone "omg this is DARK and HORRIBLE" at their stuff but still admired it.
― a kissed out red popemobile (Trayce), Wednesday, 27 February 2013 03:03 (thirteen years ago)

I think it's more if someone specifically uses "cunt" in anger about a woman, it really stands out. I'd even say that it's never really used in the jokey way about women, not in my experience in uk/ireland.
With men it could be used in all sorts of ways, with the right adjective even as a term of endearment.
― Tioc Norris (LocalGarda), Wednesday, 27 February 2013 07:39 (thirteen years ago)
Well, you'd be wrong. I mean, I accept that I have what Americans might call a potty mouth, but I use it all the time to anyone. I have no qualms about calling someone a dick or a prick, why would I have any qualms about calling them a cunt?
As for the original piece, I can't even believe this is causing controversy. FFS it was a pretty obvious extension of commentary, it's just some countries seem to be extremely weird about one specific term...
― emil.y, Wednesday, 27 February 2013 07:50 (thirteen years ago)
Women calling other women cunts is more common and acceptable for sure, though still not par for the course, and ime never in a joking/friendly way - usually more in a bringing out the big guns way
― lex pretend, Wednesday, 27 February 2013 09:43 (thirteen years ago)
K3vin how in the world is British people saying cunt remotely equivalent to str8 kids saying faggot o_0
― lex pretend, Wednesday, 27 February 2013 09:44 (thirteen years ago)
yeah fair enough, it probably would stand out particularly if a man used it about a woman, really. my point was that it has a certain way of being used in misogynist anger that is really nasty, like "bitch" but up a few levels.
― Tioc Norris (LocalGarda), Wednesday, 27 February 2013 09:50 (thirteen years ago)
The British use of "cunt" seems equivalent to the American use of "asshole", which reminds me of a joke about a golf game and a Japanese hooker.

The earliest instance of the word recorded in the Oxford English Dictionary is actually from the name of a 13th-century London street, Gropecuntelane. The name appears to have been quite literal, and there was at least one other red-light district of the same name, in Oxford.
― Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 27 February 2013 16:24 (thirteen years ago)

again, the british usage totally confuses me. the word is gendered and seems to be rooted in hate and oppression in the same way "faggot" or the n-word is, which is why it's never used here! seems kind of obvious to me!

Two local high school children also perished in the accident, while a third was permanently paralyzed.
“The overwhelming feeling I’m left with is anger,” said Junction mayor Joel Sutter, who described the 1996 Chevy Impala Dehaene died in as “a really, really cool car.” “I keep thinking: It’s not fair. It’s not fair that Chris should die while that prick teenager gets to survive, happily rolling around in his little wheelchair.”
“What were those kids even doing on the other side of the road at 3:30 in the goddamn afternoon?” Sutter continued, his voice breaking. “They knew Chris. They knew he would be drunk.”

The website's been horrible for years, IMO, especially the AV club - just way too much content all over the fucking place and all this other stuff that you wouldn't even know was there without clicking on the teeny tabs that take you to the subsections (film, tv).

They're so small! They look like they're part of the banner ad! I didn't notice them for ages. Also note that you for some reason can't get to the film section by clicking on the word "Film" in current reviews. Which is under another ad for the same thing, not to mention the entire site is sandwiched between two vertical ads for...the same thing. Major features like Dan Savage are buried way at the bottom so that they look like more ads, or maybe part of a web-ring. The whole thing is just desperately ugly and cluttered.
