Several of my (female) friends have recently used it as a descriptor of my (female) roommate. I didn't/wouldn't use it myself, but I didn't disagree. Which is weird, because I almost certainly would've been all vehemently "whoa, whoa" if the friends in question were male.

See because calling a woman a cunt seems odd to start with, I take the Onion's tweet as funny at least on the "it is clearly completely ridiculous to call a sweet little child a cunt" angle, which has been mentioned above.

Thats true. Somehow they work their satire in a way that shocks but doesn't offend, I dont know how to phrase it. There've been times I have gone "omg this is DARK and HORRIBLE" at their stuff but still admired it.

I think it's more if someone specifically uses "cunt" in anger about a woman, it really stands out. I'd even say that it's never really used in the jokey way about women, not in my experience in uk/ireland.

With men it could be used in all sorts of ways, with the right adjective even as a term of endearment.

yeah fair enough, it probably would stand out particularly if a man used it about a woman, really. my point was that it has a certain way of being used in misogynist anger that is really nasty, like "bitch" but up a few levels.

The British use of "cunt" seems equivalent to the American use of "asshole", which reminds me of a joke about a golf game and a Japanese hooker.

again, the british usage totally confuses me. the word is gendered and seems to be rooted in hate and oppression in the same way "faggot" or the n-word is, which is why it's never used here! seems kind of obvious to me!

The website's been horrible for years, IMO, especially the AV club - just way too much content all over the fucking place and all this other stuff that you wouldn't even know was there without clicking on the teeny tabs that take you to the subsections (film, tv).

They're so small! They look like they're part of the banner ad! I didn't notice them for ages. Also note that you for some reason can't get to the film section by clicking on the word "Film" in current reviews. Which is under another ad for the same thing, not to mention the entire site is sandwiched between two vertical ads for...the same thing. Major features like Dan Savage are buried way at the bottom so that they look like more ads, or maybe part of a web-ring. The whole thing is just desperately ugly and cluttered.
