get those fascists out of this innocent thread

I think I first heard friendzone before reddit was a thing, and it was about making your interest known/etc. rather than hoping one day the girl you liked would throw herself at you.

Reddit's interpretation is much more problematic.

Kiarostami bag (milo z), Tuesday, 26 February 2013 16:24 (thirteen years ago)

I just thank God reddit was not around when i was a teenager, i probably would have fallen for this kind of crap. I definitely would've been an "I FUCKING LOVE SCIENCE" pro-atheist and who knows what else embarrassing stuff.

Instead i have a few notebooks of poems i will never ever look at and some 4-track tapes i haven't heard in a decade.

Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Tuesday, 26 February 2013 17:46 (thirteen years ago)

It's great that the internet gives an outlet to teen angst, but an important thing you miss when you can find a consequence-free community for whatever hormonally-driven rage you are feeling is the void of the outside world. Kids these days have it too good, they don't get to feel truly alone in their feelings because they can just log on and find a handful of other people that feel the same way. It's important to have your feelings ignored; it teaches you that the world does not revolve around you.

16 y/o atheists who can't get girls: truly the most dangerous ppl in america

iatee, Tuesday, 26 February 2013 17:51 (thirteen years ago)

actually I guess they have committed a lot of massacres but still

iatee, Tuesday, 26 February 2013 17:52 (thirteen years ago)

i fucking hate i fucking love science

frogbs, Tuesday, 26 February 2013 17:56 (thirteen years ago)

I mean its dumb when people front about liking stuff but 'oh man I like science so much' I mean it doesn't really bother me that much, hey the sequester is about to make science not happen anymore, america could prob use more people who 'like science' even if it's fronting, I don't think it's any worse than '40 y/o men saying oh man I love taylor swift so much'

iatee, Tuesday, 26 February 2013 17:59 (thirteen years ago)

I remember reading about 'ladder theory' in like, 2001, that stuff was definitely around back then

乒乓, Tuesday, 26 February 2013 17:59 (thirteen years ago)

First time I heard "friend zone" was from a Chris Rock bit.

pplains, Tuesday, 26 February 2013 18:02 (thirteen years ago)

who else thought they'd been 'friendzoned' and was a 'nice guy' when they were in school but retrospectively came to realize that girls you don't ever actually talk to are unlikely to suddenly go out with you?

^ Not sure where that link was supposed to go, but the Adult Friend Finder pop-up was hard to miss here in the office.

pplains, Tuesday, 26 February 2013 18:35 (thirteen years ago)

^ got friend zoned

bnw, Tuesday, 26 February 2013 18:36 (thirteen years ago)

part of what's weird about the "friendzone" and concomitant "girls like jerks" stuff (and maybe even PUA culture) is that it seems to be an implicit elision of the central fact that romantic/sexual relationships are basically unaccountable. if someone doesn't like you *that way* there is almost certainly nothing you can actively do to change their mind about that. in fact, trying harder probably just pushes that possibility further away.

ryan, Tuesday, 26 February 2013 18:42 (thirteen years ago)

i haven't read PUA material but I have read marketing material, and some magic books, which are probably equivalent to PUA material, and it has convinced me mind control is REAL.

Philip Nunez, Tuesday, 26 February 2013 18:43 (thirteen years ago)

my friend has the front page on reddit right now, according to another friend of mine

i still don't know what the fuck reddit is but i thought i'd pass that along

surm, Tuesday, 26 February 2013 18:46 (thirteen years ago)

I love fucking science is awful because of the people who like it are those terrible bitter alpha nerd types. They are everywhere in Silicon Valley.

brimstead, Tuesday, 26 February 2013 18:47 (thirteen years ago)

Also because it has the word "fucking" in the title.

brimstead, Tuesday, 26 February 2013 18:48 (thirteen years ago)

This is called money bags. (zachlyon), Tuesday, 26 February 2013 19:38 (thirteen years ago)

so much of the internet is people raging against other people whom they will most likely never speak with in real life

frogbs, Tuesday, 26 February 2013 20:30 (thirteen years ago)

thank christ for that

goole, Tuesday, 26 February 2013 20:31 (thirteen years ago)

I for one am soooo glad that reddit and 4chan or whatever wasn't around when I wasn't in high school. The Church of the Subgenius and usenet was bad enough.

los blue jeans, Wednesday, 27 February 2013 02:24 (thirteen years ago)

tbh if internet culture was more subgeniusish (or better yet discordian) that would be a huge step fnordward. um, forward.

s.clover, Wednesday, 27 February 2013 03:03 (thirteen years ago)

there was a "devoted" discordian on the message board of my adolescence, he was cool but that didn't stop the place from having an active flaming forum

This is called money bags. (zachlyon), Wednesday, 27 February 2013 03:16 (thirteen years ago)

maybe i should put scare quotes around "flaming", not sure if that was a big enough thing back then, fnord

This is a good point. The internet promotes monomania in a lot of ways and lets you dig in deeper -- or dig your heels in -- with your interests and social circles.

Cunga, Wednesday, 27 February 2013 08:36 (thirteen years ago)

i dunno, i had the internet as a teenager and it didn't prevent me from feeling miserably, apocalyptically alone for much of those years. maybe i just wasn't googling the right shit? i mean actually i feel like it should make teenagers less self-centered to discover that they aren't so special, that their feelings aren't unique at all

1staethyr, Wednesday, 27 February 2013 09:53 (thirteen years ago)

Jackson @tree_bro
I feel like shit and i hate myself <-- CAN ANYBODY RELATE TO THIS??? ANYBODY/??? ON THE INTERNET?????

Thank God for "Bob".

Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Wednesday, 27 February 2013 15:53 (thirteen years ago)

i think people are nicer and more tolerant nowadays more than ever, but this could be because i'm in an office during the times when packs of high schoolers roam the streets.

Philip Nunez, Wednesday, 27 February 2013 16:00 (thirteen years ago)

How does one even do trollface unless they are 85, toothless and gurney?

a kissed out red popemobile (Trayce), Thursday, 28 February 2013 00:50 (thirteen years ago)

it's like a stupid grin looking sideways at someone, apparently

and when Mr Veg and I laughed at her impression she was like oh no it's this and showed us the trollface AND the trololol video and we were like...we know, it's just dumb <3 (we have a good antagonistic relationship with her, fyi, we weren't actually being super mean to her)
