everytime i think of the us use of it, i'm reminded of that alleged john mccain freakout at his wife.

Tioc Norris (LocalGarda), Tuesday, 26 February 2013 09:55 (thirteen years ago)

US usage of it always makes me think of Patrick Bateman for some reason

anyway, wd the poor kid probly have been unaware of this if the commentocracy hadn't gone crazy blogshit over it?

tochter tochter, please (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 26 February 2013 09:57 (thirteen years ago)

that's the environment in which it was released tho, regardless of whether it's perceived as good or bad, it was clearly designed to get a reaction.

Fizzles, Tuesday, 26 February 2013 10:15 (thirteen years ago)

oh i think it was v crass don't get me wrong i'm just noting the amplificatory properties of concern commenters

tochter tochter, please (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 26 February 2013 10:16 (thirteen years ago)

Ehh, every joke is designed to get a reaction, I'm not sure that in the place the writer was at, it was supposed to ignite the internet.

Andrew Farrell, Tuesday, 26 February 2013 10:53 (thirteen years ago)

Motherfucker is used quite a lot in the UK, but if it's a white person saying it then 80% of the time they're consciously thinking of Samuel L Jackson while they say it.

Andrew Farrell, Tuesday, 26 February 2013 10:55 (thirteen years ago)

yeah, it wasn't so much joke not designed to get reaction, more onion + twitter + cunt + child = c'mon. but agree that noisy fussing has never done any good whether its yr local rotary club or the twitterglob.

Fizzles, Tuesday, 26 February 2013 10:58 (thirteen years ago)

Lex otm about English usage of the word. I use it too much day to day I think.

Are Americans REALLY touchy about it? That bit in Curb when the guy has therapy because Larry calls him a cunt etc.

the Shearer of simulated snowsex etc. (Dwight Yorke), Tuesday, 26 February 2013 13:27 (thirteen years ago)

Definitely. It is seen as much cruder and shocking than it seems to be anywhere else. Not sure of the reasoning behind it.

Ulna (Nicole), Tuesday, 26 February 2013 13:36 (thirteen years ago)

The American pronunciation is much more...forceful?

I called my co-worker a cunt last week. Not to her face but to another co-worker/friend because I was angrier at her than I can remember being at anyone else in recent time. The friend I said it to got all offended and said she hated that word so I had to apologize and explained that I rarely use it and then I felt bad. There's my super interesting cunt story for you.

go to party leather (ENBB), Tuesday, 26 February 2013 14:01 (thirteen years ago)

Do not take that last line out of context please.

go to party leather (ENBB), Tuesday, 26 February 2013 14:01 (thirteen years ago)

c-word here almost as shocking as n-word. In some situations, more shocking, which is perhaps why it's making a resurgence. Shockers gotta shock, etc.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 26 February 2013 14:02 (thirteen years ago)

I'd say that British people use 'pussy' less frequently than 'cunt'. Somehow, the blanket US dread of the word does not cover my mom's house - where we say it A LOT to annoy my sister.

karl lagerlout (suzy), Tuesday, 26 February 2013 14:28 (thirteen years ago)

There's a ballot poll somewhere in here.

Zero Dark 33⅓: The Final Insult (Eric H.), Tuesday, 26 February 2013 14:34 (thirteen years ago)

Are You Being Served? has probably killed 'pussy' for another generation or so yet.

Andrew Farrell, Tuesday, 26 February 2013 14:35 (thirteen years ago)

I never knew how bad "cunt" is supposed to be because NOBODY ever says it, because it is that bad.

:C (crüt), Tuesday, 26 February 2013 14:39 (thirteen years ago)

kind of think that this is a word if used in an actual sexual context would be dirty enough to actually still be dirty

☠ ☃ ☠ (mh), Tuesday, 26 February 2013 15:10 (thirteen years ago)

there are some words tha t people feel very emotional about - like fuck - but why - the future will be fucky - fuck will finally be allowed in all places

Yeah. Try prefacing it with the word "boi."

is "fanny" still incredibly rude in the UK?

This beat is TWEENCHRONIC (DJP), Tuesday, 26 February 2013 15:14 (thirteen years ago)

I didn't realize it was any more offensive than fuck, certainly not on the same par as nword.

I mean, I've heard dudes in the bar call each other cuntface before. I mean, c'mon. If that's supposed to be the second-most offensive word in America, it's news to me.

pplains, Tuesday, 26 February 2013 15:16 (thirteen years ago)

i don't think it was ever incredibly rude, it was more coy/twee than anything else and now just seems outdated

xp

lex pretend, Tuesday, 26 February 2013 15:17 (thirteen years ago)

xp I'm arguing it's the first-most offensive.

Zero Dark 33⅓: The Final Insult (Eric H.), Tuesday, 26 February 2013 15:18 (thirteen years ago)

To the extent that "some would argue" some people get to use the n-word. Whereas no one gets to use the c-word.

Zero Dark 33⅓: The Final Insult (Eric H.), Tuesday, 26 February 2013 15:19 (thirteen years ago)

what about this crowd >>> thread of ballroom chants, vogueing beats, and associated cuntiness (MikeQ, B. Ames, Vjuan Allure, Jay Karan, etc.)

an average girl realizing that leggings aren't helping the cause (DJ Mencap), Tuesday, 26 February 2013 15:30 (thirteen years ago)

Nah, 'fanny' is, and I say this as someone with four brothers but no sisters, what parent's get their daughters to call their privates - 'willy' is the male equivalent.

I think.

I have kown two girls from the same greater london sphere who called it a 'minnie' - how localized is that?

Philip Nunez, Tuesday, 26 February 2013 17:51 (thirteen years ago)

Cunt is def ~the worst word~ in Eng (Scotland is a diff matter)

yeh but in scotland swearing is often more of an expressive form than a serious means of being offensive. cunt would probably be the worst word but only on a plane where cuss words generally don't mean very much.

also in scotland 'fanny' is still in common use as a fairly general insult.

hot young stalin (Merdeyeux), Tuesday, 26 February 2013 17:57 (thirteen years ago)

I've got a teacher friend in the Brighton area who got asked in class what sort of car she drove and all the girls apparently cracked up when she told them she had a Mini.

Fanny I only ever use as a fairly mild term of abuse in the same way that you might call someone a plonker.

acid in the style of tenpole tudor (NickB), Tuesday, 26 February 2013 18:00 (thirteen years ago)

"fanny" is a verb. it's kind of like "to tip" or "to open a bottle"

caek, Tuesday, 26 February 2013 18:08 (thirteen years ago)

I still think the c-word is exceptionally powerful...I reckon if you were having a row with someone and were accused flat out of being a cunt you'd struggle to find something to come back with, no?

the Shearer of simulated snowsex etc. (Dwight Yorke), Tuesday, 26 February 2013 18:13 (thirteen years ago)

What's a plonker?

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 26 February 2013 18:13 (thirteen years ago)

somewhere between a fanny and a doowally.

hot young stalin (Merdeyeux), Tuesday, 26 February 2013 18:14 (thirteen years ago)

xp Nah, that's where 'suppurating testicular chancre' comes in.

A plonker is a knob is a willy is a todger is a tool is a cock.

karl lagerlout (suzy), Tuesday, 26 February 2013 18:16 (thirteen years ago)

that's such an unnuanced way to think of our beautiful rich language.

hot young stalin (Merdeyeux), Tuesday, 26 February 2013 18:17 (thirteen years ago)

iirc plonker is an onomatopoeia for Tommy Lee's genetalia

In an angry context yeah but equally you could say offhandedly of someone "oh he's such a cunt" without it being an expression of deep hatred. We all have That Friend, right?

Prick vs dick vs cock vs pussy vs cunt vs twat, all have different connotations and i love them for it

lex pretend, Tuesday, 26 February 2013 18:48 (thirteen years ago)

Several of my (female) friends have recently used it as a descriptor of my (female) roommate. I didn't/wouldn't use it myself, but I didn't disagree. Which is weird, because I almost certainly would've been all vehemently "whoa, whoa" if the friends in question were male.
