xp i'm average build. it kicked in at the end, i'm just amazed i even finished the thing. maybe it's a sign to take it easy for a while.

i was going to buy a bottle of that but i got tyrconell for something like £21 and thought it was scarcely much better than jamesons or the irish single malt sainsburys sell for £15, ie smooth and perfectly drinkable but compared to the scotches one could buy for the usual price it was rather lacking

redbreast is supposed to be excellent (although it's a bit more expensive) but for the time being i shan't be buying any premium irish whiskies, despite ethnic susceptibility

Redbreast is great, none of the jameson premiums have let me down tbh

if i ever get near a sainsburys i'll look that up, you always mention it

it's a cooley thing iirc, probably the best/only good thing at that price in the uk (given that 70cl/40% abv equates to over £7 in duty, you can see why)

i haven't tried any of the premium jamesons, the normal one is fine although that seems to have inched up to around £20 rrp which is pushing it

Bourbon is by some decrees and history tied to being made in central Kentucky kind of like Champaign is really only made in that particular region of France. It's in a big time boom right now here and there was some stuff in the news stating that there was now more barrels of bourbon aging than people in Kentucky.

Old guy that runs my local liquor store (and bought I guess a ton of 90 proof just in case) said Maker's Mark totally screwed it up in that they should have just did what some other spirit makers have done and just sold the 86 proof overseas, where they wouldn't have gotten any flack or probably blow back like they did.

When it comes to bourbon/Tennessee Whiskey, I think the good stuff is obviously great, but really even many of the cheaper lines are pretty good. At least by my math a 1.75 Evan Williams +3-5 bucks > .75 of Makers Mark. I depends on how much drinking you want to do and are you going to mix it. I generally got a bottle of Makers Mark and even a couple bottles of Woodford Reserve around. I think to split the difference, I really like the George Dickel No. 8.

I'd rather have the Dickel or Evan Williams than Jack or Jim Beam.

I know bupkus about scotch, but eventually I will get around to trying some one day.

Tonight above mentioned green spot the some connemara then some standard jameson and jack daniels and more of the first two at home yet to finish

I started yesterday with one bottle of bourbon in the house. I now have four bottles of bourbon in the house.

yesterday i was hanging out with a guy who grabbed a bunch of old bourbon on ebay in the early 2000s. drank some c. 1957 old forester, some late 80s old grand-dad, and some mid-90s old fitzgerald (aka the whiskey now in pappy 15 when it was about 6 years old).

Cool!

it was! the ogd was ridiculously smooth and pleasant. the forester was pretty spicy and aggressive, though it tasted a little musty

new yorker article linked a few posts back is indeed v entertaining. read it a few evenings back with a few fingers of laphroaig, wishing i had some of the bruichladdichs on my cart.

OK now that my hangover has completely gone away, I have:

WL Weller Special Reserve
Old Grand-Dad Bonded
Eagle Rare Single Barrel
Four Roses Single Barrel Cask Strength OBSK

I know what to do with the first 3, i.e. drink them at a comfortable pace, but I'm conflicted about the Four Roses. Is that worth hanging on to?

what do you mean by "hanging on to?"

4R cask strength single barrels aren't terribly hard to come by, at least they weren't 2-3 years ago.

I guess just like save for special occasions or whatever, I have no real idea how hard that stuff is to get.

i'd say it's a moderately special bottle because of price and w/e but not something you need to be super careful with because it should be replaceable.

Not hard to get, really. Prince is the biggest distinguishing factor. Eagle Rare is pretty easy to drink, if you want to keep that with the 4 Roses for, what, guests? Wellers are all good, too, esp. for the price. Invest in a 12-year, or 107 ...

4 Roses single barrel is easy to find ( I just finished a bottle last week, drank it neat w/a rock), but I haven't ever seen cask strength. However, I live in a state with terrible liquor distro.

OK the 4 Roses seemed p special because it is one of 10 recipes (http://fourrosesbourbon.com/ten-unique-bourbon-recipes/) but upon a little more research & answers here I feel a little better about not saving it away for all times.

It's the occasion that makes it special. Bourbon just makes special occasions more special!

I have had to actively remind myself that I do not need to sip on a little Blue Label whenever I get home from work after seeing how much of it I had consumed over the course of 6 weeks

yeah it's worth noting that the annual limited editions are more rare/special than the recipe-specific single barrels

If I have a bottle of whiskey of ANY type that lasts six weeks I will have turned into a different man

So basically they want it both ways: to be everywhere, which means less to go around, which makes it harder to be everywhere. Thems the breaks.

i really wanted to like the kickin' chicken, but....

It goes down well with a little vermouth and bitters, but it leaves an odd taste in your mouth.

i didn't hate the taste -- a little rough around the edges -- i just hate what i did to my head the next morning.
