But then there's this so I don't know maybe it all evens out.

my least favorite and most cringey moments are when someone makes a fb status update that's just like a song lyric or a quote from a movie and someone comments on it with nothing but the acknowledgment that they understand the reference. sometimes they just say the name of the thing being referenced! like "fight club" or "bob marley"

aka xkcd humour

caek, Wednesday, 20 February 2013 15:06 (thirteen years ago)

The real value in reddit are the subs that are not representational of the larger masses. Beyond the front page.

Evan, Wednesday, 20 February 2013 15:08 (thirteen years ago)

And unlike my experience here, I get responses to my posts way more than 25% percent of the time, which is an addicting aspect comparatively.

Evan, Wednesday, 20 February 2013 15:11 (thirteen years ago)

i just opened that pic in class you goobers

purp (roxymuzak), Wednesday, 20 February 2013 15:13 (thirteen years ago)

i quit ilx

purp (roxymuzak), Wednesday, 20 February 2013 15:13 (thirteen years ago)

i mean its my fault but we are all goobers regardless

purp (roxymuzak), Wednesday, 20 February 2013 15:13 (thirteen years ago)

Those up and downvotes are at least analytics to say someone actually read your comment even if they don't have a response for you.

Evan, Wednesday, 20 February 2013 15:15 (thirteen years ago)

Does a post exist if it is not up/downvoted.

pplains, Wednesday, 20 February 2013 15:17 (thirteen years ago)

that "when its ok to say n*****" rubric reminds me of this libertarian physics dude i know who is completely emotionless and self-conscious (and racist/sexist, defends it with warped logic) - basically everyone on reddit is this person

purp (roxymuzak), Wednesday, 20 February 2013 15:17 (thirteen years ago)

i asked him if he used reddit once and he was like "yes, it introduced me to mens rights"

purp (roxymuzak), Wednesday, 20 February 2013 15:17 (thirteen years ago)

surprise

purp (roxymuzak), Wednesday, 20 February 2013 15:17 (thirteen years ago)

How come there's no League of Men Voters, Amerikkka is such a sham.

pplains, Wednesday, 20 February 2013 15:18 (thirteen years ago)

otm also rape statistics are a sham cause when women report they are always lying, loads of men are raped and they never report it; when they do report it though they are always telling the truth

purp (roxymuzak), Wednesday, 20 February 2013 15:19 (thirteen years ago)

So mad women get to drink for half-price on Wednesday nights, excuse me, let me step over all these men passed out from roofies.

pplains, Wednesday, 20 February 2013 15:20 (thirteen years ago)

our matriarchal society has trained us to be this way

Strawman? I don't interact with these posters.

Evan, Wednesday, 20 February 2013 15:22 (thirteen years ago)

feeling sad our matriarchal society trained us to be this way so I made these brownies for my hungry kids, what do you think?

pplains, Wednesday, 20 February 2013 15:23 (thirteen years ago)

lol yes the racist/sexist science-obsessed redditor who explains away his shitty points of view with warped logic is a strawman

purp (roxymuzak), Wednesday, 20 February 2013 15:24 (thirteen years ago)

Evan, I get what you're saying, and I even get that there are useful/interesting/non-soul-destroying subreddits out there. I just have a visceral antipathy to the way the site is put together and how conversation runs; it's almost as if someone went out of their way to accumulate the worst aspects of threaded USENET conversations and website comment systems and put them together.

Evan, if you have to fight through all this awful stuff to find the "gems", or as Elvis showed, you have to use another website to make sense of a thread, it might not seem like a worthy destination on the internet.

pplains, Wednesday, 20 February 2013 15:25 (thirteen years ago)

i use the site and like parts of it but you cant deny that its like 99% godawful dude

purp (roxymuzak), Wednesday, 20 February 2013 15:26 (thirteen years ago)

I do like this subreddit, but it gets updated maybe once every couple of days.

But if I was into finding porn stars that resemble my female friends, I'd have no problem finding a board that was a little more current.

pplains, Wednesday, 20 February 2013 15:28 (thirteen years ago)

i was introduced to reddit by one of my roommates in nyc. he said he went to a new years eve reddit party where they spent the entire time doing math problems, and i can only assume drinking non-alcoholic beer. if that's your kinda thing it's probably heaven. personally i'd rather scratch my own balls.

Spectrum, Wednesday, 20 February 2013 15:29 (thirteen years ago)

pplains, Wednesday, 20 February 2013 15:30 (thirteen years ago)

the only good reddits are the ones mostly populated with girls. there arent many

purp (roxymuzak), Wednesday, 20 February 2013 15:32 (thirteen years ago)

for example, /r/butt_sharpies

乒乓, Wednesday, 20 February 2013 15:35 (thirteen years ago)

how come ILX doesn't have an I Love Butt Sharpies subboard

oh right, BECAUSE IT'S A TERRIBLE IDEA

If you are in a good subreddit you aren't subjected to the garbage going on elsewhere. I realize when we're talking about how shitty reddit is we're probably just referring to the large community of shitty people and their subs, but I was unsure if it was understood that the whole website isn't like this.

"99% godawful" is a bit of an exaggeration isn't it though.

I think when the Something Awful forums are a safer and more inclusive space than your website you need to take a long hard look at your website.

Yes, too strong a word but just meant to convey it gives you confirmation that your comment wasn't completely glazed over unless responded too.

Evan, Wednesday, 20 February 2013 17:04 (thirteen years ago)

I bet you send emails with request receipts attached too.

pplains, Wednesday, 20 February 2013 17:15 (thirteen years ago)

Hey I'm only arguing for the addictive factor of satisfaction that feature provides.

Evan, Wednesday, 20 February 2013 17:19 (thirteen years ago)

sorry, i'm experiencing some cognitive dissonance between "addictive" and "satisfying"

i imagine a lot of the horrible people who used to be on something awful have migrated over to reddit

☕ (diamonddave85), Wednesday, 20 February 2013 17:31 (thirteen years ago)

reddit sure is something awful, lol peace

turds (Hungry4Ass), Wednesday, 20 February 2013 17:33 (thirteen years ago)

Elmo- You can crave the satisfaction of being part of a conversation, or at least verifying your thought has been heard. The validation can be addictive.

Evan, Wednesday, 20 February 2013 17:34 (thirteen years ago)

it's free market discussion

SA forums are actually pretty good, I think a lot of ILX folks would fit in well there

• My daughter turns four today. This is my first attempt at a cake as a single dad. I hope she likes it!

• Man sobbing at animal shelter. After being jailed briefly and his dog Buzz Lightyear impounded he couldn't afford the $400 to get his pet back.

• Living single, overworked and underpaid, but I love my girls.

• As a single momma who's never had the funds to give my kids anything but hand me down bedding from relatives, being able to do this today meant the world to me.

tbf, I don't see these as abominations deserving of scorn? The second one could lead that way, but reddit's also a place where a bunch of strangers try to donate money to get the dog out of doggie jail and shit. Reddit has an assload of flaws but these aren't representative of them.

Looking at a regular front page, whenever someone does the racist/sexist/etc. posts that get upvoted a bunch, there's usually also a top comment offering a counterpoint. Lurkers can vote - if ILX's demographics included lurkers it may not be the progressive place everyone enjoys.

Kiarostami bag (milo z), Wednesday, 20 February 2013 22:16 (thirteen years ago)

It's passive-aggressive maudlin fucking heartstrings being pulled for UPVOTES.

pplains, Wednesday, 20 February 2013 22:47 (thirteen years ago)

For some posts, absolutely. But it's a huge site, if some overworked single parents find it and realize they can vent about their shit AND get some easy praise I'm not shocked.

Even if it's all just lies and maudlin bullshit for upvotes, that's firmly in the who cares category for me. There's a not insignificant chunk of ILX over the years (TITTWIS/etc.) that's been all about the HOLD ON, KITTY.

Kiarostami bag (milo z), Wednesday, 20 February 2013 23:01 (thirteen years ago)

If I constantly posted things like "I don't know if I can pay my car insurance this month, but at least I still have my kids. Here's my vote in the Prince poll," you'd killfile me in a heartbeat.

pplains, Wednesday, 20 February 2013 23:13 (thirteen years ago)

So what about:

r/askhistorians
r/asksociology

and there's a science one and a literary studies one and some others.

Core of qualified users answer your questions. I read these pretty much every time I go online I guess. I ask questions occasionally, get interesting and worthwhile answers. I'm not aware of anywhere else you can get this specifically?

cardamon, Wednesday, 20 February 2013 23:17 (thirteen years ago)

(Mainstream reddit culture is horrible, of course. A whole lot of paedophile apologists. A whole lot of rape apologists. Or if we're feeling more charitable, people who talk out of their arse about these topics and will not listen. I don't want to/can't talk to the average redditor, in any of the main subreddits, about these topics, certainly.)
