i have definitely bought people pizza and had pizza bought for me through the random acts of pizza subreddit. 99% of reddit is disgusting but that subreddit is among the best things the internet has ever accomplished tbh

My boyfriend and I lost our cat last night, to what we assume was cardiomyopathy. We didn't even know he had anything... which I guess is the way it goes. He went from being a totally healthy 1.5 year old cat, to dead, in about ten seconds. I'm actually still replaying it in my mind wondering if could have given cat CPR or something. However, it is what it is. I just don't feel like cooking tonight.

Good Fucking Grief

You know, no shit, we lost a cat Sunday night and yet somehow, we were still able to feed ourselves in the past 24 hours.

My biggest pet peeves about reddit:

1.) Racism/Sexism/Creepy

2.) The whining and passive-aggressive self pity that seems to accompany 40% of reddit posts.

3.) The up/down arrow system of arranging a thread. Any other board and that would be No. 1.

3 is what keeps me completely uninterested even in the niche type boards that i'd be otherwise interested in

I agree, it seems disorganized and shambolic to me.

I've tried to read through a few of the IAMA's when they have a good guest but the upvoting makes it almost unreadable. annoys the shit out of me.

it's so pointless anyway because my first reaction when I wander onto reddit and see downvoted posts in a tree, my first reaction is "I wonder what was said that pissed everyone off so much *click* oh ffs *navigates away from reddit*"

Even the theoretically good/useful subreddits are thoroughly mediocre. I have the app on my phone (I like looking at pictures of puppies, Reddit is great for that) so I subscribed to frugal and cordcutters (ditching cable). There's almost zero content that isn't discussed on a major blog and there's no place for conversation because of the up/down vote system.

DIY and somethingimade are okay if you like looking at craft/hobby projects.

this is v otm. also just the fact that people are really dumb and think they are fuckin' brilliant. that would be my #2

my least favorite and most cringey moments are when someone makes a fb status update that's just like a song lyric or a quote from a movie and someone comments on it with nothing but the acknowledgment that they understand the reference. sometimes they just say the name of the thing being referenced! like "fight club" or "bob marley"

reddit is a place where this sort of behavior is rewarded with the internet points everyone on reddit is obsessed with obtaining. it's infinitely more annoying to see these comments upvoted by dozens of people. why!! what is the point!! i'm not a user but i'm guessing the whole reddit concept would probably be a lot better if 1) they got rid of karma totals so everyone would be a bit less desperate about it and 2) there was a limit to the # of up/down votes you can give in a day.

it's better when ever-present threat of ridicule keeps posters on their toes

oh and 3) forced "perspective" brain injections that make every user take a step back and realize that being as popular on reddit as POTATO_IN_MY_ANUS is a bad thing

Only you and one other person have said something about it, but that's okay. After having cancer, it's not that big of a deal I guess.

The real value in reddit are the subs that are not representational of the larger masses. Beyond the front page.

And unlike my experience here, I get responses to my posts way more than 25% percent of the time, which is an addicting aspect comparatively.
