"the biggest problem I have with the phrase separation of church and state is that by using the word church, and not temple, mosque et al. you are re-enforcing Christian bias. Perhaps we need to start calling it separation of religious dogma and state, eh redditors?"

Cunga, Tuesday, 19 February 2013 06:40 (thirteen years ago)

eh, redditors

pplains, Tuesday, 19 February 2013 14:40 (thirteen years ago)

i have definitely bought people pizza and had pizza bought for me through the random acts of pizza subreddit. 99% of reddit is disgusting but that subreddit is among the best things the internet has ever accomplished tbh

My boyfriend and I lost our cat last night, to what we assume was cardiomyopathy. We didn't even know he had anything... which I guess is the way it goes. He went from being a totally healthy 1.5 year old cat, to dead, in about ten seconds. I'm actually still replaying it in my mind wondering if could have given cat CPR or something. However, it is what it is. I just don't feel like cooking tonight.

Good Fucking Grief

pplains, Tuesday, 19 February 2013 18:05 (thirteen years ago)

You know, no shit, we lost a cat Sunday night and yet somehow, we were still able to feed ourselves in the past 24 hours.

pplains, Tuesday, 19 February 2013 18:06 (thirteen years ago)

My biggest pet peeves about reddit:

1.) Racism/Sexism/Creepy

2.) The whining and passive-aggressive self pity that seems to accompany 40% of reddit posts.

3.) The up/down arrow system of arranging a thread. Any other board and that would be No. 1.

3 is what keeps me completely uninterested even in the niche type boards that i'd be otherwise interested in

ciderpress, Tuesday, 19 February 2013 18:11 (thirteen years ago)

Sorry about your cat, pp.

One of our dogs is alive because my wife gave it rescue breathing, so to answer your friend's question "sure, you can give a cat cpr".

how's life, Tuesday, 19 February 2013 18:13 (thirteen years ago)

Thanks, life. It's the fourth animal we've lost in a year, so I'm a little used to it. Just stumbling around the house in a 1000-yard stare, clutching a Purina bag.

I agree, it seems disorganized and shambolic to me.

Ulna (Nicole), Tuesday, 19 February 2013 18:19 (thirteen years ago)

I've tried to read through a few of the IAMA's when they have a good guest but the upvoting makes it almost unreadable. annoys the shit out of me.

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 19 February 2013 18:20 (thirteen years ago)

it's so pointless anyway because my first reaction when I wander onto reddit and see downvoted posts in a tree, my first reaction is "I wonder what was said that pissed everyone off so much *click* oh ffs *navigates away from reddit*"

Ima R.A.E.D. (DJP), Tuesday, 19 February 2013 18:20 (thirteen years ago)

Even the theoretically good/useful subreddits are thoroughly mediocre. I have the app on my phone (I like looking at pictures of puppies, Reddit is great for that) so I subscribed to frugal and cordcutters (ditching cable). There's almost zero content that isn't discussed on a major blog and there's no place for conversation because of the up/down vote system.

DIY and somethingimade are okay if you like looking at craft/hobby projects.

I just remember one thread i was reading, someone made a comment about cheating death, then someone followed that up by saying playing death in a game of chess, then someone followed that up by saying "Nice, a Bergman reference!" and then the rest of the comments were people upvoting each other because they got the reference.

Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Tuesday, 19 February 2013 20:32 (thirteen years ago)

not sure i understand... you don't need to comment to upvote.

Porto for Pyros (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Tuesday, 19 February 2013 20:35 (thirteen years ago)

Ok i don't know how upvoting works. What i really meant was, the rest of the comments were people patting each other on the back. Some kind of pop-culture trivia circle jerk.

t/s reddit vs the finest of display names only

iatee, Tuesday, 19 February 2013 21:01 (thirteen years ago)

finest of display names is more educational

yeah i mean i am not buying a pizza for someone who made up a tragic story but i will buy one for a broke college student who will later buy one for someone else. and i would def have one bought for me when broke.

this is v otm. also just the fact that people are really dumb and think they are fuckin' brilliant. that would be my #2

purp (roxymuzak), Wednesday, 20 February 2013 01:48 (thirteen years ago)

my least favorite and most cringey moments are when someone makes a fb status update that's just like a song lyric or a quote from a movie and someone comments on it with nothing but the acknowledgment that they understand the reference. sometimes they just say the name of the thing being referenced! like "fight club" or "bob marley"

reddit is a place where this sort of behavior is rewarded with the internet points everyone on reddit is obsessed with obtaining. it's infinitely more annoying to see these comments upvoted by dozens of people. why!! what is the point!! i'm not a user but i'm guessing the whole reddit concept would probably be a lot better if 1) they got rid of karma totals so everyone would be a bit less desperate about it and 2) there was a limit to the # of up/down votes you can give in a day.

oh and 3) forced "perspective" brain injections that make every user take a step back and realize that being as popular on reddit as POTATO_IN_MY_ANUS is a bad thing

also pp I'm really sorry to hear about your cat. :( R.I.P.

purp (roxymuzak), Wednesday, 20 February 2013 02:13 (thirteen years ago)

Only you and one other person have said something about it, but that's okay. After having cancer, it's not that big of a deal I guess.

• My daughter turns four today. This is my first attempt at a cake as a single dad. I hope she likes it!

• Man sobbing at animal shelter. After being jailed briefly and his dog Buzz Lightyear impounded he couldn't afford the $400 to get his pet back.

• Living single, overworked and underpaid, but I love my girls.

• As a single momma who's never had the funds to give my kids anything but hand me down bedding from relatives, being able to do this today meant the world to me.

The real value in reddit are the subs that are not representational of the larger masses. Beyond the front page.

Evan, Wednesday, 20 February 2013 15:08 (thirteen years ago)

And unlike my experience here, I get responses to my posts way more than 25% percent of the time, which is an addicting aspect comparatively.

purp (roxymuzak), Wednesday, 20 February 2013 15:13 (thirteen years ago)

i mean its my fault but we are all goobers regardless

purp (roxymuzak), Wednesday, 20 February 2013 15:13 (thirteen years ago)

Those up and downvotes are at least analytics to say someone actually read your comment even if they don't have a response for you.

Evan, Wednesday, 20 February 2013 15:15 (thirteen years ago)

Does a post exist if it is not up/downvoted.

pplains, Wednesday, 20 February 2013 15:17 (thirteen years ago)

that "when its ok to say n*****" rubric reminds me of this libertarian physics dude i know who is completely emotionless and self-conscious (and racist/sexist, defends it with warped logic) - basically everyone on reddit is this person
