haha how did it take so long for him to get to the "they are just douchebags" conclusion am a limited medium like Twitter

Ima R.A.E.D. (DJP), Friday, 1 February 2013 21:42 (thirteen years ago)

I like that the guy prodding him keeps going on about masculinity when it wasn't mentioned before he brought it up

mh, Friday, 1 February 2013 21:48 (thirteen years ago)

first sign of trouble was the name "a continuous lean"

乒乓, Friday, 1 February 2013 21:50 (thirteen years ago)

is there a single thing using the "a <adjective> <noun>" structure that's not douchey

乒乓, Friday, 1 February 2013 21:50 (thirteen years ago)

mh, I believe the prodder is elmo

Kiarostami bag (milo z), Friday, 1 February 2013 21:51 (thirteen years ago)

that camping expedition looks suspiciously like a matchmaking service for aspiring bros to meet other aspiring bros and hopefully join together in newfound brohood.

cocktail onion (fennel cartwright), Friday, 1 February 2013 21:51 (thirteen years ago)

brb, registering the twitter handle apoppedmolly

Ima R.A.E.D. (DJP), Friday, 1 February 2013 21:51 (thirteen years ago)

my masculinity spirit guide is a queer trans guy I knew in college briefly; I once told him this on twitter and one of the tips he gave me was "embrace flaccidity" which just seemed so perfect to me.

<3 back elmo btw

Women, Fire, and Dangerous Zings (silby), Friday, 1 February 2013 21:51 (thirteen years ago)

hahahaha kudos, elmo

❏❐❑❒ (gr8080), Friday, 1 February 2013 21:54 (thirteen years ago)

(kudos)

mh, Friday, 1 February 2013 21:55 (thirteen years ago)

"please go thrift for a clue" hoooooooooooooo boy

steaklife (donna rouge), Friday, 1 February 2013 21:57 (thirteen years ago)

fueled by satanism, violence, and sodomy (elmo argonaut), Friday, 1 February 2013 21:59 (thirteen years ago)

I'm envisioning the group of men on this wilderness thing and the readers of "a continuous lean" on a venn diagram right now

and "bizarre attitudes about masculinity" is kind of a third bubble

mh, Friday, 1 February 2013 22:03 (thirteen years ago)

haha awesome xp

feel like some people just want some kind of larger justification to be pompous bullies. hey look! manliness can help w/ that too!

suze (Matt P), Friday, 1 February 2013 22:09 (thirteen years ago)

when i sent the gawker link to my ex-evangelical friend, he immediately replied with "it's christian."

zero dark (s1ocki), Friday, 1 February 2013 22:10 (thirteen years ago)

and i really wouldnt be surprised if it was, kony-style

zero dark (s1ocki), Friday, 1 February 2013 22:10 (thirteen years ago)

i really did enjoy that his initial response was to call me out on my taste level, because THAT'S not elitist or anything

no joke the first thing i thought was how similar the tone was to the #KONY video

❏❐❑❒ (gr8080), Friday, 1 February 2013 22:15 (thirteen years ago)

haha, I can't post now, because I was about to name-check PROMISE KEEPERS too

mh, Friday, 1 February 2013 22:16 (thirteen years ago)

my promise keepers experience involved me quietly doing my latin homework while surrounded by thousands of emotional christian men at a baseball stadium

been kind of turning it over in my mind whether the ACL guy, "authenticity" sins aside, really is linking himself to a brand or vision of masculinity by espousing his ideas on style above others. even if he thinks he's just cultivating a particular aesthetic, it's one that leans heavily on traditional staples of masculine signifiers, in that it's a combination of a traditional workwear aesthetic and the most staple traditional pieces of western male clothing, the suit, pants, dress shirt, etc.

kind of disingenous to act as if he's not a sort of arbiter of masculinity

mh, Friday, 1 February 2013 22:31 (thirteen years ago)

If the French press breaks does this turn into some Lord of the Flies shit?

Kiarostami bag (milo z), Friday, 1 February 2013 22:35 (thirteen years ago)

when i sent the gawker link to my ex-evangelical friend, he immediately replied with "it's christian."

yes! i am christian and thought the same about this video. the awkward earnestness and like deep desire for brotherhood or w/e is such a hallmark of contemporary christian culture. it's so cheesy. they even use christian buzzwords a lot too. i heard "intentional" come up so many times in the video and christians looooove saying that.

that being said though i certainly know a lot of deeply secular artisan-males who would give a nut to go on this dumb trip. the "deeply secular artisan-male" is kind of the dominant species in my city of vancouver

cocktail onion (fennel cartwright), Friday, 1 February 2013 22:36 (thirteen years ago)

mh i think you've articulated exactly what was bothering me, I think it's nearly possible to articulate a sense of men's style without implicitly speaking about masculinity

fueled by satanism, violence, and sodomy (elmo argonaut), Friday, 1 February 2013 22:38 (thirteen years ago)

impossible, I mean

fueled by satanism, violence, and sodomy (elmo argonaut), Friday, 1 February 2013 22:40 (thirteen years ago)

full disclosure, this is what i make coffee with when i camp:

http://www.rei.com/product/726094/msr-mugmate-coffeetea-filter

http://i.imgur.com/8ioI2lS.png

if the coffee comes out too strong, you just water it down some, if its to week, add some more grounds and let it steep longer, fuck it: you're camping

❏❐❑❒ (gr8080), Friday, 1 February 2013 22:41 (thirteen years ago)

on one hand i do understand this sort of 'movement', which seems to come from a weirdly desperate place of feeling disconnected from (insert a signifier of the ascetic rustic life here). feel like a lot of dudes around me are filled w/that kind of discontent, so you get these 180s into weird shirtless forest folk brodowns. on the other hand i don't understand the obsession w/pure masculinity.

I, for one, welcome more women wearing these articles of clothing

mh, Friday, 1 February 2013 22:41 (thirteen years ago)

also i hope i wasn't the only one who lolled at the line "8000 feet above the sea"

cocktail onion (fennel cartwright), Friday, 1 February 2013 22:42 (thirteen years ago)

al leong otm

camping rules and its very good for the modern soul to get in to nature for a while, but that goes for women too imo

❏❐❑❒ (gr8080), Friday, 1 February 2013 22:45 (thirteen years ago)

omg @ artisan-male

camping can be so fun and chill, you can remind yourself you're an animal dependent on the planet bla bla too if you want

on the subject of like outdoor sport and gender i think this looks really good:

suze (Matt P), Friday, 1 February 2013 22:54 (thirteen years ago)

there are different levels of camping! I wouldn't mind doing what these guys did, but it's about a half-step more roughing it than the people who have a RV and bring along their ATV to screw around with during the day. Not like they carried their gear and food on their motorcycles or anything.

mh, Friday, 1 February 2013 22:55 (thirteen years ago)

what gender are you thinking of there, matty

christmas candy bar (al leong), Friday, 1 February 2013 22:56 (thirteen years ago)
