I did read and love the first book, but it took me way too long to finish, so I'm happy to segue over to the TV show for the rest of the story. I actually found the book pretty hardgoing and difficult - the stop/start chapter format kind of sapped my momentum. (By comparison, I breezed through The Stand.)

The guy who does the audiobooks is totally hammy but in a really excellent and charming way - I think that might be the optimal ASOIAF delivery method.

Chuck_Tatum, Friday, 1 February 2013 20:53 (thirteen years ago)

Audiobook spoiler: Tyrion is Welsh.

Chuck_Tatum, Friday, 1 February 2013 20:54 (thirteen years ago)

fully expect Martin to die without finishing the series tbh

another one for Sanderson to mop up

Ima R.A.E.D. (DJP), Friday, 1 February 2013 20:56 (thirteen years ago)

the second book is better than the also-excellent first. starting 'a storm of swords' soon, hoping to finish before season 3 so i don't get inadvertently spoiled.

christmas candy bar (al leong), Friday, 1 February 2013 20:58 (thirteen years ago)

once you move on to the second and third books, the first one starts to feel more like a prequel.

This is Roy Dotrice; he is basically a god IMO

JESUS, SPOILERS MAN.

I'd be happy with more redheads, tbqfh

The New Jack Mormons! (kingfish), Saturday, 2 February 2013 02:04 (thirteen years ago)

I'm on the last book, and keep putting off reading it so that I can stay in that world. Which on reflection is a bit sad.

oh hai (captain rosie), Monday, 4 February 2013 11:28 (thirteen years ago)

The second and third books are the best in the series, although I've been putting off reading the fifth until the sixth is truly on the horizon.

My point above was simply that if you are SO CONCERNED about spoilers (it's just a tv show guys), then go out and read the books. You either care about this story, or you don't. Being invested in the tv show and not reading the books is weak. Saying, "I make time to watch television, but not to read novels," will not gain my respect.

Sure, GRRM is not Faulkner. Nor is he trying to be. But he's an immaculate craftsman and storyteller. I haven't had a writer's hooks that deep in me for a while. Literally could not wait to read what would happen next, until I reached the fourth book, which I consider the "methadone" book.

For my money, the best literary fantasy stylist is Gene Wolfe. And you can stack him against Joyce and Faulkner and literally anyone else you can think of.

Nate Carson, Wednesday, 6 February 2013 20:31 (thirteen years ago)

Fingers crossed that when this series is complete, HBO will option Wolfe's Book of the New Sun next. It could use more boobs too.

Nate Carson, Wednesday, 6 February 2013 20:31 (thirteen years ago)

i read lots of books. i'm also enjoying this TV show, and enjoying being surprised by it. i don't need some sanctimonious asshole criticizing any of the above. thanks!

sean gramophone, Wednesday, 6 February 2013 20:36 (thirteen years ago)

Yup

I've read the books but consider this a particularly dickish POV.

what if you care about the story but not about the "scrollwork" on everybody's "doublets"

a permanent mental health break (difficult listening hour), Wednesday, 6 February 2013 20:42 (thirteen years ago)

i mean i read (three of) them but only because my name is theon so it was a fascinating novelty

a permanent mental health break (difficult listening hour), Wednesday, 6 February 2013 20:44 (thirteen years ago)

I don't think anyone cares about gaining your respect for reading a half-dozen fantasy novels, tbh.

remarkably similar to the sound of Martin typing

Welcome to my world of proses (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 6 February 2013 20:48 (thirteen years ago)

responding to someone you think is being sanctimonious by calling them an asshole is some bullshit.

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 6 February 2013 20:49 (thirteen years ago)

Gonorrheaing

christmas candy bar (al leong), Wednesday, 6 February 2013 20:49 (thirteen years ago)

it funny though, GOT does seem to occupy a fairly unique position with regard to spoilers. I can't think of any other adaptation that's inspired such animosity between readers and non-readers

Number None, Wednesday, 6 February 2013 20:51 (thirteen years ago)

There is a separate spoiler end thread to avoid this kind of hogwash.

Gukbe, Wednesday, 6 February 2013 20:52 (thirteen years ago)

Spoilered*

Gukbe, Wednesday, 6 February 2013 20:52 (thirteen years ago)

exactly, the fact that two threads are required at all is unusual

Number None, Wednesday, 6 February 2013 20:54 (thirteen years ago)

it's almost like this story exists in two different formats

a permanent mental health break (difficult listening hour), Wednesday, 6 February 2013 20:55 (thirteen years ago)

It's unique in that a serialised television show is an adaptation of a series of books.

Gukbe, Wednesday, 6 February 2013 20:56 (thirteen years ago)

so is True Blood. I doubt anyone gives a shit about spoilers for that

Number None, Wednesday, 6 February 2013 20:57 (thirteen years ago)

ditto Dexter, although I gather the show went its own way after season 1

Ima R.A.E.D. (DJP), Wednesday, 6 February 2013 20:59 (thirteen years ago)

wasn't Walking Dead a comic book...?

Welcome to my world of proses (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 6 February 2013 21:01 (thirteen years ago)

Boardwalk Empire also an adaptation of some bio iirc

Welcome to my world of proses (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 6 February 2013 21:01 (thirteen years ago)

one book != a series

the list of television shows based off of comic books is ludicrously long

how many tv shows based on informative pamphlets/brochures I wonder

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 6 February 2013 21:04 (thirteen years ago)

This show has deviated plenty.

I found the second season kind of sad. The "battle" of the Blackwater was pathetic. I knew they wouldn't have the cast of thousands necessary, but the 60 dudes they had made it worse than if they hadn't shown it.

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 6 February 2013 21:04 (thirteen years ago)

Nah the Blackwater battle was great. They did a really good job of scaling it down without making it look cheesy, I thought. I mean, it's never gonna match what's in your head.

The Mini-Mamas and the Mini-Papas (latebloomer), Wednesday, 6 February 2013 21:13 (thirteen years ago)

At least they didn't just have Tyrion pass out at the beginning only to wake up in the aftermath.

Moodles, Wednesday, 6 February 2013 21:13 (thirteen years ago)

I thought it was cheesy as hell. You can't make King's Landing so big and have that handful be the invasion force. You either need to scale it all down or make sure your shots don't show that the line of men is twenty across and three deep.

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 6 February 2013 21:16 (thirteen years ago)

isn't that what cgi is for

Welcome to my world of proses (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 6 February 2013 21:20 (thirteen years ago)

My point above was simply that if you are SO CONCERNED about spoilers (it's just a tv show guys), then go out and read the books.

Ok - some of us are A) dyslexic and painfully slow readers; and B) incredibly busy with jobs and families and all that silly stuff and just don't have the time to read a bazillion pages worth of some fantasy books, simply to satisfy some smug, ignorant internet jerk-offs who are too lazy to find the thread specifically for the people who *have* read the mother fucking books.

Porto for Pyros (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Wednesday, 6 February 2013 21:22 (thirteen years ago)

also, i thought the blackwater battle was great.

Porto for Pyros (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Wednesday, 6 February 2013 21:23 (thirteen years ago)

The way people on this thread respond to someone telling you the books are worth reading is enlightening. you guys deserve this shitty tv adaptation.

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 6 February 2013 21:26 (thirteen years ago)

it's all love up in here, huh

Glasgow Film Featival is screening "Blackwater" followed by a q+a with the cast (who? I don't know). Kind of want to go but after the EFF Serenity screening and q+a I think I'd just cringe a lot.
