Signed up for the Grand Rapids Marathon in October. Here I go again.

Jeff, Thursday, 31 January 2013 22:23 (thirteen years ago)

I'm back up to 50 mile weeks. Not totally acclimated to it yet, I'm tired all the time. I'll keep it up though, this is going to become my new base mileage. Surprisingly, I remain uninjured, except for a few aches here and there. It has really taken about 3 years of running to get my body used to this kind of mileage.

Jeff, Friday, 8 February 2013 14:53 (thirteen years ago)

Any one ever run a Ragnar relay? Looks like I'm officially on a team now for Madison to Chicago Ragnar.

Jeff, Friday, 8 February 2013 17:13 (thirteen years ago)

It has really taken about 3 years of running to get my body used to this kind of mileage.

Weird huh? I feel like its taken me about 5 yrs to get to where I am now: three or four 6 milers and a 10-12 miler per week. Seems like it shouldn't take that long for someone in pretty decent shape to begin with. I only recently got over the hurdle of running 2 or 3 consecutive days.

tobo73, Friday, 8 February 2013 17:46 (thirteen years ago)

I think it just less so about being physically fit, but just getting your body used to the abuse of pounding the pavement for so many miles.

Jeff, Friday, 8 February 2013 17:56 (thirteen years ago)

Agree-- and I can't see any reason for me to put myself through that. I always stop long before my body becomes acclimated to any kind of abuse. That doesn't even sound like fun! I'm just in it for the fresh air and the opportunity to move quickly, listen to music, and be by myself in nature.

I guess I have probably said that like 1000x but it's always worth mentioning that not all people who run are goal-oriented.

and that sounds like a gong-concert (La Lechera), Friday, 8 February 2013 18:16 (thirteen years ago)

Sure, I know tons of them. Even run with them.

Jeff, Friday, 8 February 2013 20:18 (thirteen years ago)

My Ragnar team is going to be non-competitive, we're just doing it to finish and have fun.

Jeff, Friday, 8 February 2013 20:19 (thirteen years ago)

two weeks pass...

I am worn out! I've run 193 miles over the last 30 days, I think I need to cut back for a couple of weeks.

Jeff, Sunday, 24 February 2013 16:51 (thirteen years ago)

i'm not looking forward to this 5k in 2 weeks. i can run slowly for a pretty long time but i remember how hard the last one was (although it was 90 degrees) and i just barely broke 30 min.

veryupsetmom (harbl), Sunday, 24 February 2013 17:04 (thirteen years ago)

i want to do better, not worse, and it's gonna be torture either way is what i mean

veryupsetmom (harbl), Sunday, 24 February 2013 17:04 (thirteen years ago)

30 minutes is pretty good, I had a hard time breaking that in high school

los blue jeans, Thursday, 28 February 2013 02:56 (thirteen years ago)

I'm taking my friends spot in a half marathon in a couple weeks, if I stop posting around that time then look for my stuff on ebay

los blue jeans, Thursday, 28 February 2013 02:57 (thirteen years ago)

doing this http://www.nhs.uk/LiveWell/c25k/Pages/couch-to-5k.aspx. am on week 4.

thomasintrouble, Sunday, 3 March 2013 11:47 (thirteen years ago)

building up nicely for my first half marathon now, it's four weeks tomorrow. i missed about 8 days through illness but just did 12k in 57 minutes which is much faster than i'm used to. not sure if speed is likely to tail off hugely over the 13 miles, but even if I allowed myself to do the last section in v slow 10-minute miles i reckon i'm on course for a pretty good time.

Tioc Norris (LocalGarda), Saturday, 9 March 2013 13:01 (thirteen years ago)

and the holy grail of beating my brother :)

Tioc Norris (LocalGarda), Saturday, 9 March 2013 13:01 (thirteen years ago)

5k was today, times aren't up yet but i didn't do as badly as i thought i would. probably like 5 seconds over 30 min. i barely ran at all the past few weeks.

veryupsetmom (harbl), Sunday, 10 March 2013 19:04 (thirteen years ago)

i'm not too discouraged by the slowness of it because if i'm in about the same shape i was in late last june when i could run about that time, i will do a lot better in the same race this year

veryupsetmom (harbl), Sunday, 10 March 2013 19:07 (thirteen years ago)

yay harbl - hope you enjoyed it!

my marathon training was badly derailed last month cos i munched my foot playing football with my children. couldn't walk on it without pain for a couple of weeks and ending up doing no running at all for the whole of february. did a bit of biking but was mostly very slack. oops! back on it now though, five weeks from today to get as fit as i can. can forget all about going for a time so i'm concentrating on putting in long sunday runs with a semi-long run midweek just to build endurance as much as possible. rest of the time is basically resting or easy stuff. 18 miles today and not too painful but i know my legs will be wrecked now until wednesday. well done on yr mileage jeff, that was about what i should have doing...

acid in the style of tenpole tudor (NickB), Sunday, 10 March 2013 19:42 (thirteen years ago)

29:58.3, so a .8 second PR for me then. i think i can chop a couple minutes off that by end of june if i'm not lazy.

veryupsetmom (harbl), Sunday, 10 March 2013 20:25 (thirteen years ago)

aw nice work!

acid in the style of tenpole tudor (NickB), Sunday, 10 March 2013 20:30 (thirteen years ago)

Congrats harbl!

Jeff, Sunday, 10 March 2013 20:31 (thirteen years ago)

thanks. one thing i'm sure would help is dropping a couple pounds. i also weighed about 12 lbs less this time last year. but i gained some of it from lifting, which is probably why i didn't lose speed despite not running much.

veryupsetmom (harbl), Sunday, 10 March 2013 20:32 (thirteen years ago)

I've been holding steady at 45 to 50 mile weeks for the last 6 weeks. In fact, I've missed only one workout in the last 6 weeks, because of 9" of stupid snow. I've seen great improvements, not only in the mileage I'm able to run, but also in speed. My easy pace is now consistently around 8:20 m/miles and my speed workouts I'm going down as long as 6:00 m/miles. My long run is topping out at around 15 or 16 miles every Saturday. Only pain these days is some lingering foot pain, but nothing serious at all, just nagging. For the first time in my life I feel like I actually may be in decent shape.

Jeff, Monday, 11 March 2013 12:03 (thirteen years ago)

my brother ran a half marathon today and averaged 6:59 miles so now i can't say my slowness is due to genetics, just lack of hard work

veryupsetmom (harbl), Saturday, 16 March 2013 22:33 (thirteen years ago)

did 9.5 miles yesterday, another step on the way for my half-marathon, which is three weeks today.

Tioc Norris (LocalGarda), Sunday, 17 March 2013 12:44 (thirteen years ago)

you're well on track then, one more long one and you can start easing back a little i reckon. horrible 21-miler for me this morning - cold and wet, wind in my face seemingly the whole way, dodgy guts, legs were totally spent and my head was just gone by the end of it. couldn't wait for it to end and have just felt horrid since i stopped. there's still a part of me that enjoys the grimness though, a little bit of pride in feeling so bloody awful and knowing that you've really pushed yourself there.

jeff, it sounds like you're in great shape, i love that feeling of really getting on a roll (not that i've had it very often). gets to a point where you're waking up every day and just feeling like you really want to run. and yes, your speed starts really improving too, slow runs start feeling so much easier, it's kind of hard to hold yourself back. anyhow, keep on it!

acid in the style of tenpole tudor (NickB), Sunday, 17 March 2013 17:44 (thirteen years ago)

May hit 40 degrees here this weekend, but then may get another snow storm. Winter sucks but I'm optimistic that this will be the last of it. Then I'm taking my running to the next level. Wherever that is.

Jeff, Friday, 22 March 2013 16:20 (thirteen years ago)

i can't even remember when i gave up running, but i need to start again.

and that sounds like a gong-concert (La Lechera), Friday, 22 March 2013 16:23 (thirteen years ago)

Good luck with the half, you should be fine. I survived mine despite running about 7 miles max up to that point. Not that I wasn't dragging my ass for the last three miles.

los blue jeans, Tuesday, 26 March 2013 14:51 (thirteen years ago)

I'm a mid-distance runner. I was training for my first half marathon, and after never having gotten injured, I get injured three times after I moved to a different country. I blame this for my injuries!

I'm slowly getting back on track. I love to run and can't picture my life without it, really.

I generally prefer to run outside, instead of a gym. What about you guys?

kafkaesque (c21m50nh3x460n), Tuesday, 26 March 2013 16:29 (thirteen years ago)

Always outside, all seasons. I can't do treadmills.

Jeff, Tuesday, 26 March 2013 16:39 (thirteen years ago)

Been sick last week which hit my training for this half mara on April 7th. I figure I'm prob in good shape to finish but maybe two/three more runs to prep me would help. I'd like to have done 11 miles or thereabouts rather than the 9.5 I did last time.

Guess I'm there or thereabouts tho. Freezing UK weather ain't helping.

Tioc Norris (LocalGarda), Tuesday, 26 March 2013 17:50 (thirteen years ago)

Always outside, all seasons. I can't do treadmills.

same here. It took me several years but I have now gotten totally comfortable running in cold weather

tobo73, Tuesday, 26 March 2013 21:47 (thirteen years ago)

first run of the year today! yes, the first. combo of it being too dark to run after work (my neighborhood isn't downtown detroit or anything but i got my lip split by a group of guys last year and now i'm overly cautious), poor weather on the weekend, and of course, total laziness. but at least i got a run in before april.

it went pretty well! feels good to be back in the game.

your holiness, we have an official energy drink (Z S), Saturday, 30 March 2013 17:27 (thirteen years ago)

I've had the flu for the last three days. Pretty much ended my chance for a 200 mile month. I was on pace to run 220!

Jeff, Saturday, 30 March 2013 17:31 (thirteen years ago)

Got a 10 mile race a week from now. Coach wants me to run a 7:05 pace. Distressing.

Jeff, Saturday, 13 April 2013 13:16 (thirteen years ago)

A year ago, that was my 5K pace. Hard to process that I can hold it for 10 mile now.

Jeff, Saturday, 13 April 2013 13:18 (thirteen years ago)

And in a wonderful turn of events, I have a last minute work trip next week.... to Boston! So I get to go to the Boston Marathon and hang out with all my friends who are running it.

Jeff, Saturday, 13 April 2013 13:19 (thirteen years ago)

Sounds like you're doing really well and making good progress Jeff, good for you! I've got the Brighton marathon tomorrow, training didn't really go well at all so I'm just going to plod round in 8 minute miles I think. Weather is really horrid at the moment - strong wind and it's pissing down with rain. Forecast is for better conditions tomorrow, god I hope they're not wrong.

dschinghis kraan (NickB), Saturday, 13 April 2013 15:23 (thirteen years ago)

Plodding, ha. Best of luck and enjoy it.

Jeff, Sunday, 14 April 2013 00:31 (thirteen years ago)

Just been out to walk the dogs. So cold out there! And yet we're promised temperatures as high as a sweltering 12C, we are truly spoilt. Route goes mostly along the seafront which runs east-west. Wind is from the south so we're going to have it right across us the whole way. I hate wind! Fuck you wind!

eeek, nervous

dschinghis kraan (NickB), Sunday, 14 April 2013 06:21 (thirteen years ago)

Wind is the worst. Three things I hate: snow, hills, wind.

Jeff, Sunday, 14 April 2013 14:19 (thirteen years ago)

Ended up going a bit faster than planned and did solid 7:40 miling. That is until mile 23 when all of a sudden it felt like someone had powered-off my brain and then from that point onwards I was all over the road. Legs were fine, I just couldn't make myself go forwards properly. End result was 3:27-something, average speed of 8 minute miles. Doh! Don't feel too bad today, legs are a bit tight but otherwise okay. Some guy died on the course though, which was really upsetting to hear about. 23 years old, suspected cardiac arrest due to an undiagnosed heart condition. Fuck, horrible news.

dschinghis kraan (NickB), Monday, 15 April 2013 11:31 (thirteen years ago)

Oh man, the brain powering off happened to me in my last one. Way to pull through.

Jeff, Monday, 15 April 2013 13:52 (thirteen years ago)

I had to miss the half marathon I was meant to do last week, never recovered enough from that chest infection. Really annoying, been taking it easy the last week or so but might chance a run this week. Have already signed up for another half-mara in 4/5 weeks.

Tioc Norris (LocalGarda), Monday, 15 April 2013 13:56 (thirteen years ago)

jeff you alright?

life is good (Hunt3r), Monday, 15 April 2013 19:24 (thirteen years ago)
